Voodoo Lady's Hut in MI:SE

I was playing through EMI a bit today when I realized that the signage around the Voodoo Lady's hut on Melee Island is highly similar to the new signs they added in MI:SE. Here's an image for comparison:

I just thought it was kind of interesting, and haven't seen anyone else mention it.

I agree, but when I first played MI:SE my initial reaction was "Why did they add signs to it?" and now I finally realized why :D

Didn't even notice. I hadn't played Secret in a long time.

I noticed it a while back, but I might have been happier if the backgrounds were even closer to EMI. I actually find some of the backgrounds in EMI pretty.
  • edited August 2009
The backgrounds in EMI were wonderful. It was the 3D models that looked very poor, especially against those pre-rendered backdrops.
  • edited August 2009
EMI looks pretty good if you force it to use 8X anti-aliasing.
  • edited August 2009
That is interesting - I had wondered about the signs myself. Thanks for that ^_^

I need to play EMI again too. I have played SMI maybe 8 or 9 times, LCR maybe 4 times and CMI and EMI only once or twice I think. I did like CMI, and EMI had its good points, so I might dig them out again. Mind you, I'd love to go over all the LucasArts adventure games again, but the queue of games I have but need to play is far too long as it is :(

I only ever had a pS2 version but wanted a pc version, I just found mine on ebay from someone called big frogsales.

I have both versions of EMI and I think it looks nicer on PS2, I was playing it on my PS3 and it looked great.

Yet it's still easily the worst in the whole monkey island games. :p

I think you could've left the copier in there and it would still be awesome. Since that move is one of the most epic movies ever.

It would have made less sense.

But perhaps it would have been even better that way.

I also like the game. I do think it's the worst in the series but that doesn't make it bad when it's in a great series.

thats just it...i don't really consider it the worst.

I think they should do a director's cut of it, not the kind where they just add in 34 seconds of useless stuff that no one ever cared about, the kind where they redo like half of the movie/game.

A lot of the puzzles, dialogue and environments are solid, there's just a lot of stuff that could be cut/replaced/fixed and it would make the game a lot better.

I think PART of why it gets a lot of hate is because it was a graphical downgrade from Curse. People like progression and the blocky characters look bad. It's hard to hate Grim but EMI is an easy scapegoat for the "adventure games went to Hell" crowd with 3d and new controls.

The Director's Cut wouldn't even be that hard to remove 99% of people's problems with EMI. Only one thing comes to mind that would need a major reworking - everything else is just better graphics or additional dialog to explain backstory.

    [Spoilers]

    * Retcon the Herman Toothrot thing to make more sense - Ozzy no longer is involved in H.T.'s death, etc. Convoluted? Sure. Doable EVENTUALLY with enough explanation and research? Sure.

    * Add in a "hard or easy monkey kombat mode" like ship fighting in CMI, where easy is insanely simple.

    * Turn the giant robot into a gigantic zombie skeleton, who's neck and body is the rib cage/bones as seen from SMI. That'd be AWESOME and totally within MI.

    * Remove the robot's identity as "the secret" of MI.

    * Make LeChuck's alternate forms suck less

    * Explain WHY LeChuck can shift like that

    * Hint as to why LeChuck can return after the end of EMI - add in to the ending an explanation of LeChuck's return in TMI

    * Explain better WHY LeChuck died at the end of EMI and foreshadow it better

    * Add in a few more people to talk to EMI when you get to Monkey Island so it's less hideously boring

    * Redo Jumbayla Island entirely. This would be the hardest part. Murray and Stan would need to be reworked to be less of a let down too. Knuttin Atol maybe should've been exclusively featured.

** Make the game start at night. It's tradition!

Im ok with all of these except the last one. Assuming, of course, you are referring to the whole tourist trap thing..

Im so sick and tired of people complaining about that... ITS SUPPOSED TO BE LAME! Thats the point! It's a whole new kind of evil that they're facing, and removing that angle would completely negate the plot.

I'm aware it should be lame in one sense - but it's lame in a way that breaks the game continuity in a major way. Instead of minor anarchorisms [sp] you have a full blown major city from today in MI.

I think it could just be done better.

Oh cmon.. having a major city from today is no different from, say...having an evil amusement park. Monkey Island has ALWAYS had stuff like this, its not just EMI

    Wellllll...

I guess that's a fair point because I don't ever whine about the amusement park. It's on a lesser scale, yeah. The park was iffy too though.

How about this: Get rid of Planet Threepwood, but keep Murray and give him a bigger part. I think that's the one that bugs most people anyway.

I only played EMI once when it came out, so it's been a long time. But I do remember that the feel of the game was different from the rest. The writing wasn't as solid, and it was much too self-referential. Like the other guy said, the anachronisms weren't as cleverly done as they were in the past, and the game seemed to want to bask in the glory of past Monkey Island greatness, with all its throwbacks to past puzzles and characters.

But it was still a pretty good game.

I'm cuttin' you a major deal here! I'm leaving you the whole rest of the island. It's a fair compromise.

And I do agree it was funny but it I think it is for the wrong reasons. It's funny because it goes a bit TOO far.

And yet all people want from TMI is Wally this, and Kate Capsize that, and Murray, Murray, Murray. Kinda ironic, don't you think?

Most people are very lucky they haven't gotten what they've wished for.

But I think all the changes you posted would be a nice start on making EMI a much better MI, PK.

You'll be glad you shopped with smiling Stan. Take this complementary literature, and this compass.

The only other thing I could think of that would make the game closer to an inarguable and universally accepted classic would be to extend the end sequence puzzle to be more like LCR or even CMI like. Am I missing something obvious?
  • edited August 2009
I allways wanted someone to just explain the Monkey Robot. I wouldn't mind if someone said... umm... "Herman made the monkeys build it from the ruins of the Amusement Park."
I could have bought that. Herman did teach monkeys to sail in SMI, the amusement park was there and those monkeys seemed smart enough to pull it off.
  • edited August 2009
Except Herman didn't lead the monkeys anymore, Jojo Jr. did

Honestly I just wish it was a giant skeletal zombie monkey. I can't imagine a cooler ending.

Just some more nitpicky stuff, like Alexandra Boyd doing the voice for Elaine, for continuity's sake. :)

Well, even though that would have made an awesome ending, we are already stuck with the robot, so it's too late to fix it. It could turn as bad as the "Han shot first" thing.

The difference with that is that Lucas was altering a classic. EMI is far from being a classic, as far as the majority of MI fans are concerned.

I wouldn't change anything later referenced TMI or a future MI game. That's written in stone. Retcons for things people despise that are executed in a similar way I think are A-OK. I didn't say throw out the ending - I want to alter it to be more fitting to the series and to be cooler.

Really EMI is an excellent game but it has some tragic flaws.
