Elaine's annoying voice (bad recording)

Hey,

I don't know if anyone else noticed this, but at the Royal Chamber, when you're talking to Elaine, her voice is weird, it sounds like a cheap recording. I haven't noticed it in any other part of the game though.

Any thoughts?

Too much compression on it indeed. Sounded like the wii-version was just used for the PC version sadly.

    Way too compressed.

Probably the voice clashing with the sound of the waterfall in some way.

I wonder if they'd release an update to fix it :\

I thought I could hear it alittle bit everywhere, but it was extra noticeable at the Royal Chamber. Everytime someone said 'S' it sounded kinda scratchy.

I wouldn't mind downloading a bigger file if it meant better quality on the voices.

There's a thread about this in the Support Forum.

It has a couple of responses from TTG staff.

I don't think the compression is really to blame here... sounds more like some clipping was introduced before.

    can we agree to disagree?

    We can.

Does it matter? It could be one, the other or both - the fact remains that the speech quality is poor, and must be improved.

Nope, doesn't matter. I was simply surprised because I hadn't seen that kind of problems with Vorbis before, and I have a fair number of voice-only tracks at low bandwidth for cellphones and PDAs.

I sincerely can't hear anything wrong with it. Can someone please tell me how to hear poor sound quality? Seriously. I can't understand what anyone is complaining about. At least it's not SBCG4AP where you can hear words skipped constantly.

I can't believe that all gamers this game generation are as tech savvy as they proclaim to be, at least I'd figure that only less than a quarter of them actually know what they're talking about.

I noted no sound problems either. I think some [and note, I said some, not all] gamers are just at the peak of being spoiled this generation and are whining, as folk do, just because.

I didn't hear it in e1 either, but in e2 I really got some serious distortion... eventhough I only used my laptop's built-in speakers. It's not that the game suddenly becomes unplayable, but it definitely was noticeable.

I'm not a sound technician. As far as audio is concerned, I'm a simple enduser that has some experience with different sound formats, simply because it's necessary with the dozens of devices that I own.

Edit: Ok, maybe a little bit more than a simple enduser :) Demo, needs Firefox 3.5+

The sound quality is low, the Speech file for Episode 2 is half the size of Episode 1, luckily Guybrush, LeChuck and Winslow seem to have decent bitrates but other characters are being reduced even more, Elaines first appearence in Episode 2 is done quite badly, spiking at the "s" sounds and to me, felt un adjusted compared to what was around her, later in the episode this is done a lot better however.

I'd just put it down to time, some characters seem to of had a rush job, like theyve taken the Master Recordings, quickly converted them down and threw them into the game without proper adjustments or checking, again, just for some characters.

This has been discussed here quite a lot really and the only thing we can hope for is that TellTale take another month out after Episode 5 to correct and increase the audio quality for the DVD versions.

And I can't believe that people with lousy hearing are telling others that they're "whining" when it's actually been a widely-observed and reported problem that's been acknowledged by Telltale staff in another forum.

Maybe your ears just aren't as sensitive, or your speakers are better/worse and for some reason don't make the problems as obvious.

Here's an easy way to hear some of it.

    1. Start a new game.

    2. Turn music and SFX to 0

    3. Rush through to meeting Elaine for the first time, and listen to her carefully.

    4. (guaranteed you'll hear this at least) Take the glass eye from the statue and listen to guybrush. There are five or six audible pops while he's speaking those lines.

People complained about the sound quality in the first episode too, and I never noticed anything of the sort.. This time however, Elaine was very noticably bad. It's not game breaking but it did stick out a lot.

I don't think anyone would mind a slightly bigger file size, if it meant avoiding things like this.

Thank god I am one of the people who didn't experience this problem :P

I wonder how many people who didn't hear anything wrong used a headset...

If you're using speakers it won't stand out so much I'm guessing.

I use speakers and it stood out a lot, but I am using surround sound.

I had no problems with both Laptop & PC.
    Didn't use a headset.

No offence but if you're using laptop speakers, you shouldn't be in a thread judging sound quality. :p

    didn't sound bad to me!

If you can't hear it, a) use a good pair of headphones or b) you are hard of hearing. I don't mean the latter in a bad way, just that you can't hear the high frequencies as well as others. It's painfully obvious throughout, and really took me out of it the times Elaine spoke (which were blissfully rare). Can be a bunch of things, but it's obvious that they are compressing a 44khz track with too low a bitrate to keep up with the highend. Or some such shite. It's a shame regardless.

I heard a couple of slight distortions with high pitched sounds, but not enough to be noticeable enough to spoil my game. It's just not one of the things I focus on.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the voice being recorded in another country and emailed to Telltalle. Or did I hear they used Skype? I saw that somewhere on another thread or was it on that interview with Alexandra Boyd?

I was thinking the bad sound was down to Creative's crappy drivers for Vista then I read this post and others about some of the bad sound in this game, although I didn't notice any bad sound in chapter 1.

Speaking of which, I had no problems getting stereo surround sound in chapter 1 but for some reason chapter 2 is only coming out of my two front speakers.

I have a 7.1 set up and Vista 64bit and have to set games in ALchemy if they use DirectSound3D. Does Tales of Monkey Island use DS3D? And do I need to add it to ALchemy? Or is the game supposed to sound this rubbish?
  • edited August 2009
It's "supposed" to sound this rubbish, yes.

    Oh well, all fixed now!
