You can. It works just fine with trackpad + WASD/arrow keys. You can also use the trackpad alone for some click-and-drag-to-move-Guybrush-around action, although it won't be as precise as using a mouse. But yeah, you should be good with what you've got.

I find the trackpad better than a mouse for moving Guybrush around; I'm able to move him more deliberately. I have a mouse for my laptop and I've chosen not to use it while playing.

Hmm. Now that I think about it, you have a point -- trackpad click-and-drag isn't as fluid in terms of quickly changing the direction Guybrush is heading, but the mouse controls can be overly "twitchy" at times. Though it should probably be noted that click-and-drag, mouse or not, isn't my favorite way of controlling Guybrush (I'm an "arrow keys+trackpad" girl myself). ^^;
Can you play the new MI on a laptop, or do you need a mouse attachment?
the controls should work fine with a trackpad. for walking around the wasd controls should work better than the trackpad though.
i have read some posts on this forums from users that couldn't play it properly, because of their graphics chipset.
you should check out the demo and see if it runs properly on your machine. if the demo works fine, the episodes should as well.
of course, you can also use the demo to try out the controls...
