First time playing CoMI!!!

edited September 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
Ok so I've seen a lot of comments everywhere on the internet saying that CoMI is the best of the series. Sadly I've never played it before... but today i discovered it in a shop... I just had to buy it :D. And now i know why you think this game is so great.
I mean already the beginning is extremly funny! :D:D.
Also the singing on a ship part is amazingly funny :D.(i don't wanna spoil anything but i don't know how to make that thing where you can't see the text).
Anyways i love the simple point and click gameplay. It's just sooo funny and amazing... it's funnazing!!! :D. Right now i'm at Part 4 :D. If you haven't played it yet... you are missing on a lot of fun :D.

You can type [ spoiler] [/ spoiler] (without the spaces) to make spoiler tags :) everything inbetween will be invisible ;)

    example:

    [ spoiler]This is a spoiler [/ spoiler]
    would be:
    This is a spoiler

Yeah! It was a great game. I have been playing it again in Mega Monkey Mode recently to get myself occupied for the wait of Chapter 3 of Tales.

Certainly my favorite of the series. The atmosphere is fantastic. The art style and the music are straight winners. High five Michael Land

If jou just discovered you like point & click adventures, I suggest you check out ScummVM.
Its a nifty tool that allows you to play all the old classics on new computers and with a bit more luxury.

    bobdevis,

What advantages does ScummVM have over using a program like DosBox?

Wow, you're moving right along. Enjoy it, it's a real turning point in the series. Many jokes and references in Tales originate from CMI.

    DOSBOX can't run CoMI :p
(unless you install windows 98 ON dosbox, and play it through there. but who would do that?;) )

CMI is a good game. I've played it so many times I know every single puzzle by heart. :D

You shouldn't play games from CD in ScummVM. Just copy all the files you need to some directory on your HD and play from there.
    What you need for what game is listed here;
    http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Datafiles
In case if MI3 you copy both CD's to the same location. It will complain that some files will be overwritten but that doesn't matter as they are identical files anyway.
If you want to get int working now, remove Mi3 from your ScummVM profile (don't worry, you are not losing your savegames), then copy all the needed stuff to your HD, then add the game again in scummVM.
If you have more trouble, just check their forum.
    bobdevis,
What advantages does ScummVM have over using a program like DosBox?
-No need to run the game installer, just copy the right files. (so no need to mess with sound-card detection or any of those DOS-era things)
-No need to have cd or floppy in drive, or mess around with floppy or cd iso's.
-You can chose different graphic filters to compensate for your screen being gigantic compared to the game resolution.
-Way faster then Dosbox (so you can use it on smartphones etc..)
-Runs some Win3.x/Win9x games (like MI3, Discworld2 etc..)
    -Fixes some bugs.

If you don't mind installing the game, you could also use this custom installer. It automatically copies all the files from the CDs to the install directory you choose so you don't need the CDs to play anymore, and it installs a custom game launcher too, with some options not in the standard launcher.

I love COMI. I think it's my favourite of the series so far.

I was a little skeptical about playing it at first. I hadn't read any reviews, but has seen some screenshots and heard that the characters had voice overs, and just thought about how different it was to the first 2 games.

Then when I played it, I was amazed. Yes, certain things are different, but everything is handled so well, from the quality of the cut-scenes to the voice casting. The puzzles are faithful to the rest of the series too, which I tend to find quite important. Also, COMI brings the Monkey Island series to a whole new level, introducing some of the most memorable jokes and running gags in the series now, while still remaining true to it's prequels.

The Curse of Monkey Island is one of those rare games that is quite popular, has lots of really positive reviews, and still is not overrated. It gets the praise it deserves, and deserves the praise it gets.

    bobdevis,

What advantages does ScummVM have over using a program like DosBox?

DosBox is an emulator program that emulates the entire computer. Essentially DosBox pretends to be a complete 486 computer housed within the program. It gobbles up your RAM and CPU clock-cycles in emulating the hardware paths that the emulated software will use.

ScummVM is an emulator for SCUMM-based games, along with a few others. With it, you only run the program, not the hardware as well.

Before I learned about ScummVM, I tried to play The Dig through DosBox, which even on a P4 2.4gHz with 2GB of RAM system running WinXP, chugged like I was trying to play Crysis on the high graphics settings.

So, back to my original point, ScummVM runs the game, DosBox runs the virtual computer on which you play the game.

Yea but I've been able to run some more complex games smoothly on DosBox, like Ultima 8 Pagan. You just have to know how to tweak the settings correctly so it runs smoothly, like changing the CPU cycles.

I have DosBox on my system anyway, since I don't only play SCUMM adventure games but other DOS games.

My personal motto is if ScummVM supports it (properly, not unfinished like the current SCI implementation) then play it in ScummVM. Use DOSBox for everything else. It just makes sense. Of course you don't get the same menus on SCUMM games with ScummVM and in CMI, Indy3, Maniac Mansion, and Zak McKracken it completely bypasses it in favour of its own (unless you use a special shortcut key which will let you view it but won't let you save or load with it).

I don't know why but they had that old game there. It was the only one. It has 2 cds and on the cd it actualy says Windows 95 :D.

right now i can truely say that CoMI is for me the best game I have ever played.

Sadly the ending of COMI is rushed, that's the only major flaw of the game IMO.

I found I couldn't play my copy of CoMI in SUMMVM it wouldn't let me save. It did work just fine in vista but at a hideous resolution using the custom launcher someone mentioned. I first played it with my dad when it came out with the bounty pack. Still got it and play it from memory every few years!
  • edited August 2009
maybe you can download it somewhere? But it+s quite old so I'm not sure. Anyways i've just completed it :D... it was incredible but I didn't like the ending that much. The last 2 parts were to short ):.

I heard they had planned something much bigger (Another song for example), but it was cut for budget reasons. :(

Yeah, on one of the monkey island websites, they have drawings of deleted scenes meant to be towards the end. I think it's on World of Monkey Island, but I'm not entirely sure. It's actually not that big a deal though because even if those scenes where in it, it would still be short and the final scene remained the same. The ending was great, but everyone's expectations were so sky high at that point, that the ending was a let down. I mean, if you sneeze during the final scene, you would miss what happens to some of the characters.
  • edited August 2009
maybe they'll make a special edition for CMI with all the removed footage.
  • edited August 2009
That'd be fun ^^ It was a shame about the ending, though COMI isn't the only game that's happened in (I was disappointed with the ending to the first Simon the Sorcerer game too).

Seeing as the voice actors from COMI have made a comeback for Tales and SMI:SE then maybe they will try making that last scene as it were originally planned at some point, even if it's just a video file of the ending instead of a whole remake of the game.

I'm not saying it's likely... it's just not beyond the bounds of possibility either.

Actually, when I asked about this in the Private Forum, Dom said something along the lines that all the characters DID record dialogue for that cutscene, it just couldn't be animated and finished in time. So they still should have the recordings for the cutscene between Chapter 5 and 6.

CoMI ..: you're simply the best.

It really is. I can't second that any further. It's the best game ever produced ... possibly after Superfrog that is :P

I am at this moment replaying CoMI myself (I think it's the 4th time) and I must say, it is without a doubt the BEST game I've EVER played...

This game got released 10 years ago and its' visual style is by my standards absolutely stunning!
    The voice acting is FANTASTIC
The puzzles are funny, inspired and have a great balance of logic and surreal to them
There are a lot of laugh out loud moments (who can forget the "A PIRATE I WAS MEANT TO BE" song?)
It makes you laugh, it makes you think and it does so with incredible style

What more could you ask for in a game?

(I'll never understand how we got to mindless zombie/robot/alien/terrorist shooting games being the standard for games when there were games like CMI 10 years ago...)

And I've just realised how much addicted I am to this game, I've finished Secret around 6 times, MI2 around 5 times, Escape only 3 times but Curse, I've finished this game Over 10 times! It's got to the point where I even managed to do a speed run and clock it in 1hour and 40minutes!
