Sam and Max demo crashes after opening titles when game starts

Opening credits run fine but as Sam (the dog?) sits in the chair with his gun the game freezes with just the music playing.

Opening up task manager shows CPU usage at 100%.

I've tried turning desktop to 800 x 600 and then running the game but no success.

A couple of times it has gone to blue screen of death with an error message about NV4 file. I was getting this with Quake 4 aswell (but after 20mins of gameplay).

I have latest drivers with geforce 6800 Gt. Dual core P4 3ghz and everything is up to date.

Was thinking it could be an issue with onboard Sound?

    It sounds like a sound issue, as that's the point in the game where the first line of dialog would be played. I'd try to make sure you have the latest sound drivers for you machine.

    been fiddling with sound drivers for over 2 hrs. Can't get it to work.
