Can i run Monkey Island on my mac?

edited September 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
Hey guys,

This would be the first time I've bought a game for my mac. I don't think there's a mac option for the new MI, so how would i run it on my mac?

Thanks guys, i used to play MI so much as a kid, now it's my 25th Birthday today (I'm treating myself you see) and i want to buy it but need to make sure it'll work first!

Can't help with running MI on a Mac, but Happy Birthday!

    (Does this help? http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxgames/)

It doesn't run natively under MacOSX. If you want to run it, you basically need a way to pretend it's running Windows.
Crossover Games, which TG mentions is probably the cheapest (you don't need a Windows license) and easiest way to get it to work (there's no real second OS with it's own hardware to maintain) ... if it works (apparently it works for most people, but you better do a search here with your OS version and hardware). The only sure way to get it to run is install a real Windows on your Mac.

Right, I'm not very good with computers, as you can probably tell, but would this spec of pc be good enough to run MI, plus what do you think of it as a deal?

    Intel core 2 x 2.66 ghz
    2 gb ram
Nvidia Geforce 8500 gt 512 mb
500 watt power supply dual fan
    windows xp pro
    Motherboard Asus P5VOC-8
    2 x DVD/CD burner
    19" samsung LCD

    USD $400
    GBP 260 pounds

You can try grabbing a copy of Windows XP: Home Edition and using Boot Camp to dual boot your OS.

Dual Booting means that you can start your computer with one OS (Mac OS X) or another (Windows). Since Telltale games are only compatible with windows, The best thing is to dual boot with boot camp.

Unfortunately, as I tried to search for it on Apple's site, I got a 404 error.

I'm a mac user, I'm to lazy to do crossover games (did snatch the free version of it the one single day they allowed free downloads) my experience is you always have to set things up with it which I'm to lazy to do, so dual boot my computer with a windows XP (and boot camp, the new drivers that came with snow leopard also allow you to read mac volumes (finally!)). Anyway, works like a charm with bootcamp (which is a full windows all in all) :)

If you're a university student at a university with msdnaa you can usually download free copies of windows using it. They're only valid for as long as you study though.

    ...it's a joke. Lighten up.

It seems like a joke I would make, though I would have gone for something about not having enough dollars to utilize Telltale's innovative Legal Tender Memory system.

Anyway, people have said that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. My guess is that they say that because they never encountered opinions expressed in stock internet graphic form.

Sarcasm is all good and well and i love it. Using sarcasm on people in situations where they will not understand it on the other hand is not, hence the idiot sign. If someone who knew computers asked me that thing I would more then likely have made a smilier comment, having someone who don't know computers at all ask me the same thing, you have to make sure to actually give a decent answer as they will more then likely not get the fact that it's sarcasm, esp not in writing. There is a fine line between being sarcastic and just being a smartass.

It plays great on my Mac with CrossOver Games.

    What I would suggest is:

    1) Download the CrossOver Games trial from this page. It will work for a week with no limitations and should let you know if the game will run.
    2) Create a new bottle (in CrossOver Games) and install Internet Explorer 6 in it, following the instructions on this page (steps 1 to 3 from the second tip).
    3) Run the TOMI installer in the same bottle.
    4) Follow the instructions from the first tip on the same page, so the keyboard will work.
    5) Enjoy!

I know, it sounds complicated, but it saves you from having to buy Windows ;)

just login with your board log-data.... then you don't need the serial.

Did you follow the instructions in my last post (including the installation of IE6)?
When you start the launcher, does it ask you for a serial number right away, or does it try logging you in first?
I originally had a problem where it was asking for my serial number and never accepted it and the installation of IE6 in the same bottle solved that problem.

Telltale's games won't work in Parallels 3, Parallels 4 or Sun Virtualbox. Tried all of those virtual PC:s with XP and Win 7, and with Sam & Max Season 1, Wallace & Gromit and Tales of Monkey Island.

Tales runs perfect on a Mac with Parallels installed.

And here it is. Didn't run it full screen so you can see the parallels window to prove it works: it runs in coherence mode perfectly at 1920 resolution (the highest on my laptop).

Macco, you might be doing something wrong (have you got the latest Direct X and Windows updates installed?) Trying to think of a reason why it wouldn't work??

Yup, tried everything I can think of. Everything updated, lots of stuff downloaded and installed from Microsoft. No dice.

I run TT games via Boot Camp / Win 7, and they work perfectly, but when I boot the very same Win 7 partition with Parallels, games will not launch. I get the launch window, but after that nothing.

Oh, the HW is iMac early 2009 2,93 GHz, 4 GB, ATI 4850.

    edit:

that WAS a stupid question (from me)- I see you are running Windows 7; not XP

    sorry,
all I can say is that it works perfectly fine with XP; have no experience Windows 7

i assume there's still no way for me to run them on my PPC mac?
  • edited September 2009
There are emulators for PPC macs but they are a lot a lot slower then then ones for the intel macs, I'd say you can try but I really doubt it.
  • edited September 2009
Maybe a stupid question, but if I run it in parallels, will my MBP run longer on battery? When I run this in bootcamp, my battery is drained very fast.
