Been a while since I read the books, so the order could change if I took the time to re-read, but from the top of my head:
ASoS>AGoT>ADwD>ACoK>AFfC
As for the seasons, I have to stress that for me they are all great in their own ways (so, no "huge gaps" for me), but obviously some are more flawed than others:
Season 4 > Season 3 > Season 6 > Season 1 > Season 5 > Season 2 > Season 7
I love all the books almost equally...but then I loved the dorn parts and the Aegon and the Golden Company parts...so sue me.
The thing about the series...I guess it is as good as it can be...but the Dorn parts were garbage...and I am sorry but season 7 and 8 should have been 10 episodes...now it is like we are getting the cliffs notes of what the last 2 books will be about.
