Has anyone Interviewed Ron Gilbert to ask him what he thinks about Tales so far?

edited September 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
Everyone knows he helped the project, and worked with the team but has there been an official word yet from Ron Gilbert on what he thinks about the TTG Monkey Island Series?

I think it would be AWESOME PR and very interesting news to get Ron's opinion on these games, esp if it's positive.

It would probably help the adventure game franchise over all :)

Yeah, AWESOME PR unless the "Grumpy Gammer" honestly isn't satisfied. If he's keeping quiet to help Telltales, then I think he should stay quiet. (Plus, why distract from his own game coming out?)

Considering his comments about MI3 I wouldn't be surprised if it was very negative.

    So...

If Ron Gilbert doesn't like Tales, does that make it suck? Would you enjoy it less?

If Ron likes the game, that's nice. If he hates it...oh well, I like it. Sorry it doesn't match the fantasy game you never got around to making Ron.

Ron has been interviewed about a billion times about it and always says he likes it, and he consulted on it during development so I assume he had input on it, they wouldn't have called him in just to say "haha in your face we aren't going to take your opinion seriously"

I asked him this whilst at PAX (note, this is strictly from memory):
Me: Hey Ron Gilbert, I'm a huge fan, I loved your Monkey Island games and your Penny Arcade Adventure games, so I want to ask you, what do you think about Tales Of Monkey Island?

    Ron Gilbert: I like it.

As if to confirm it, he went to the make-a-scene-with-telltale event. However, I'm guessing that he said this so as to not jeopardize his relationship with Telltale and Dave Grossman. However, this is assumption, and I have no evidence for that.

Or maybe he might have said that because he genuinely likes it?

Tales of Monkey Island is a great game regardless of what Gilbert's opinion of it is. If he likes it then great; if not then I don't really care.

if he says he likes it, then he likes it.

when a game industry person gets asked if they like a certain game and they DON'T like it, they always dodge the question by saying how talented the devs are and how much they admire them or something. It's professional tact.

Seriously if Ron didn't like it, or If Ron didn't have a say...do you really think telltale would have made the game? From what I've asked at Pax. Ron, had a lot of say, but he trusted Dave with a lot. So he officially approves of Tales.

Wow, it's hard to think about someone not liking TOMI.

I mean having a new game on the franchise we all love after almost a decade!

And Ron Gilbert was involved in the creation of the game and it is mostly his franchise, so why wouldn't he like it?

And I agree that if he said he liked, then he liked. That man knows how to keep a secret, but he is no liar. He has his full mind on his new game, so basically he thinks there's no need for a more elaborate answer.

    Thank you. My point exactly.

Sorry, guys, it was just the cynic in me talking. I guess Ron Gilbert would have a lot of faith in Dave Grossman, having worked with him on many games and all (Monkey Island 1 & 2, Pajama Sam)

Who cares if Ron likes it or not. It's the best Monkey Island that we could get after all these years.

Yep, and it noticeable improved for instance on the humour front in E2 but...

One thing that makes me really wonder is, when i was watching the GameSpot DeathSpank video interview with Ron Gilbert and he showed the adventure part and so the conversation with Eubrick i instantly had to laugh out loud, same when i was watching the Tim Schafer presentation of Brütal Legend where i had to laugh out loud for several times.

TTG games are more about smiling from time to time but the moments were you really have to laugh are very rare.

All in all it's still good enough so that i buy it, i guess that's the part which mostly interests TTG, but it's also not something which fully satisfies me inside.

I LOL'd in both the Strong Bad and the Sam & Max games, but oh well, to each one's own...

I was sceptical about Sam and Max at first but once it hit its stride I was surprised how many LOLs I got out of it. Tales thus far has mostly been mildly amusing more than really funny. I'm hoping it picks up as it goes.

Which comments about MI3? I have never read an interview where he said he disliked it beyond just finding it weird that someone else was working on his baby...

LOL you guys, I just figured that he was a respected and nostalgic opinion .

He's already asserted himself deeply into the franchise and in the under ground fan society he's part of the roots of the great big and tall adventure game Christmas Tree...You can't have a tree without its roots and it's wrong to keep them under the dirt in this case and keep Ron down there with the worms...

I only though it was rational and practical, functional for an artist to target what was relevant to him. I'd hate to think that Ron doesn't approve of a project that he helped work on. I'm a sentimentalist to Ron, I believe that as a person he has inspired growth in the industry. We all have entertainment heroes, Ron is one of mine. I want to know more about his personality, I want to know more about the personality over all behind the Adventure game genre so that it can be more lively and have a deeper voice in all of the video game industry.

Having read his blog, I am certain that if he disliked it, we would know.

I read a couple of interviews with ron and tim, and they both thought Mi3 was awesome. I can't see why they wouldn't think this seires is awesome as well, what with it being the best MI so far.....

That's highly possible because I loved the modernized gaming in Curse and 4, the cinematic feel, voice overs, animation, it was further developed in my honest opinion. Further along. I can't wait to play the new TTG episodes knowing that Gilbert himself worked on the project.

    Except, apparently you CAN wait.

:p Yes, I suppose I can. See, I'm on my PS3 right now and my computer is on a fritz so I'm stuck on this thing. Though I guess you're right, I am in fact waiting so clearly I can wait.

I'm getting somewhat tired of this game of "he said this", "No, he said THIS". Can somebody just site some reliable sources, here?

    Comments like these?
GK: And speaking of Monkey Island, did you ever plan on revealing what exactly the secret is?

RG: I had definitely planned on doing that in the third game, yes. There's no question about that, but, you know, and then when Jonathan and Larry made Monkey Island III, which is a great game...I think they did a fabulous job on that. They didn't know what the secret was. I told nobody. So, you know, they weren't really able to kind of reveal that, but I would love to make another Monkey Island game. If I could make another one...I have this whole story mapped out in my head for how I want to tie it all together with the other two games, kind of bring it all back to the original thing, and that would just be a dream of mine.

Mixnmojo: Have you played Escape From Monkey Island yet, and if so, what did you think about it?

Ron Gilbert: I played MI3 and though it was very good. Not the story I had planned, but funny and well done. I have not played MI4

Radiobuzz » What do you think about the third and the fourth part of Monkey Island? A lot of fans share the opinion that the quality of those games are really under the original ones. Do you share that opinion?

Ron » I think the 3rd one was great. It had good writing and great humor. It's not the story I would have told, but it was good. I never played the 4th one.

Thanks for posting that. I've wondered what he thought about it, I've also seen videos on youtube where he said the same things.

Sure thing. I can't tell you where to find it exactly, but he said it in his Idle Thumbs interview from ages ago. I'm looking for the exact quote right now, give me a second.

I'm also pretty sure he's mentioned it somewhere else; best check The SCUMM Bar.

Edit: Right. Some guy beat me to it.
