Please TellTale - Dont ruin Tales with Murray or Stan!

edited September 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
There are so many better characters in the MI series than these 2. Stan is a complete waste and Murray is just a nuisance. He isnt funny and I roll my eyes every time I see him. Lets take Monkey Island 3 for example. Murray sitting on top of the voodoo lady house sign (complete waste) and then on the carnival prize stand and in the crypt. He really adds nothing to the game and isnt even funny. He is just a bother and detracts from the game and MI experience

The same is true with Stan. Monkey Island 3 was awesome until Stan showed up. The cemetery scenes were terrific......and then they were ruined by Stan. They had the crypts, the awesome grave digger in his house and then Stan shows up selling insurance and turns the whole setting and dark environment into some circus.

Please telltale.....do not ruin this great new series with these two characters. Its mind boggling - the praise they get on these boards.

Judging from the description for the new episode, it may be a little late for your opinion to make a difference.

Yeah, Murray's been confirmed for quite a while at this point.

Murray and Stan are two of the funniest characters in the monkey island series. I dont really understand how you can hate either. Murray is always entertaining attempting to be evil but not able to do anything. and Stan hes just hilarious to watch with the arm flailing.

I like Murray and I LOOOOOVE Stan. They crank me up (but Stan is better).

    You suck.
    And that is official.

I think there ARE better characters to bring back as well
HOWEVER I still would be very happy with Murray and Stan, just because it would tie thing together, more with Stan since he was from the original two.

I would also like to see the Pirate of Low Moral Fiber, the two nameless pirates from the cutscenes in CMI (one that is big boned), the army of the damned, kate capsize, and the lookout. How great would it be if the lookout was atop one of the new island's cliffs in TMI?

On a side note: I think it would be fantastic if they hinted that the events of EMI were all a dream.

Never really cared so much about murray.
He WAS a great character in CMI, but part of what made him work was that all in all, he was never much more than some talking part of the setting.
I don't mind him returning if it's WELL DONE. Seeing him in EMI was funny for a copple of seconds but you soon realized he had nothing to do there and was boring as poo.

Kinda the same goes for stan. He was great fun in MI1, MI2 had him (purposely, i think) starting to get on your nerves and it was a joy to shut him up in his coffin. But then, even though his eppearance was great fun in CMI, he started getting boring as well, and it got even worse in EMI (i don't even remember what he was selling in there).

So all in all, while i don't understand why so many people keep yelling about returning characters, what matters IMO is not IF anyone returns, but how it's done. As far as murray is concerned, i reeally don't care right now, when i play chapter three i'll see if he's interesting or not.
I would also like to see the Pirate of Low Moral Fiber

Part of what make those guys great is that they've always been rather useless and not much more than a source for some funny lines. Which is why they seem pretty easy to fit in about any game, unlike more developped characters. They're kinda the exception to the rule, because you're pretty much allowed to be lazy if you want to get them somewhere. So yeah, i wouldn't mind more hype about including those guys and a bit less about murray or stan.

If Stan isn't in the game, it just won't be true Monkey Island game.

They aren't going to do that judging by the Ultimate Insult reference in the first episode.

I hope people won't stone me to death if I say Murray and Stan are getting a bit old for me. Why them? There are lot's of characters in the Carribean, why do we always have to run into just these two clowns? Reminds me of those prequels. They kept bringing back some old mugs (C3PO, R2-D2, Bobba Fett, Jabba, Chewbacca, etc.) just for the fans and every time they did that it just ended up hurting the story. If you want to bring someone back, do it so it would work with the story, not aganst it.

I'm laughing just thinking about it! Oh Stan.

For Star Wars, a thousand times yes, I agree with you. However, Monkey Island doesn't try to take itself seriously. Having certain characters appear again doesn't make the plot stupid and the galaxy very very small like it did with the new SW trilogy.

Stan's whole gimmick is that he's always randomly there...this awful used car salesman character. You can always take some solace in the fact that he's not a main character and rather just in it for one puzzle. As for Murray, we'll see how he does in Tales but Murray can always be replaced by some other comic relief you can carry with your items(parrot). Neither character is crucial to the plot nor are they there for the entire game so just shrug it off if they annoy you, they usually aren't around for long.

Not having murray is like not having grog, and if theres no grog. Pirates aren't happy. Murray is just one of those skulls that fans like.

I think Stan should eventually appear: He has been in all the previous games.
But I rather want no Stan at all than a Stan without any sense or justification on the plot/puzzles.

But I think Murray should not appear: He fitted well in CMI, he just sucks in EMI. If he appears in ToMI, it should be extremelly well justified.

Nothing to add, i agree 100%

And to StoutFiles, well, you're right as well. Having some fun with the characters doesn't hurt as much in an environnement that doesn't take itself too seriously to begin with. But Spadge's main point is still true. Even if it seems random, every character should have some kind of purpose, or else it'll just feel off and rather lame. Sure, it's not the fact that murray was in it that ruined EMI, and as you said we can shrug it off if it's done "bad", but that's kinda the point : why bother and waste a good character if he's not needed ?

Now i obviously want to stress out that i'm in no way AGAINST any of those character's return. I do trust telltale to use them well. It's just that it seems like many people seem to think they SHOULD be in there no matter what, and that's what i find rather annoying.

deffo not have murray in more then one chapter. ppl want to see him back ( me included) becasue he came out with funny lines. plus i also think the attraction about murray is that he just turns up in the most random places. its funny to think just how he got there and what has he been doing all this time becasue he cant walk or anything just stay in one place ans talk to himself. also one of his lines that cracked me up was somthing like ' i..i.. i was fearsome wasnt i' i kinda compare him to cartman from southpark in a way. he is evil but you cant help but love him. as for stan he is hella funny but its kind of more of a ' he has been in evry game' kinda deal and wouldnt be the same without him. i rember the days when largo was second to murray. i would also like to see other more random ppl in the game too. like mad marty or somthing

i absolutely LOVE stan from 1 & 2, but his voice casting pretty much ruined his character for me in 3 and 4.

This thread is really crazy. Closing it down, folks, sorry!

Before I go, XuGator, I can confirm that we'll at least partially be ruining Tales for you, if those really are your blanket criteria for what will ruin the game. Hopefully in practice you like what we're doing, though, and it isn't actually ruined.
