edited October 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
So, time to start the horserace - anyone manage to get it working?
Once i hit launch the game, it crashes.

Anyone with a solution?

Do the previous versions work for you and did you do anything to your machine since?
  • edited September 2009
    The previous games work a-o-k.
I had a bottle set up that i copied intially to get Siege of Spinner Cay into, and that worked good. So I duped that bottle again and installed LOTL, and no luck, crashes before the actual engine can start up.

oh, and no, didn't even update my osx or anything. same as last month.

When I do it I install them all into the same bottle, try that
  • edited September 2009
Make sure you tick to check DIRECT X when you install

    so uninstall

and install again with that box ticked
  • edited September 2009
And let us know if any of these work so others who are having the same problems might know what to do!
  • edited September 2009
No luck. I tried making a new bottle, I tried installing it into the bottle that Spinner Cay works in. Nothing. Nada. Zippety-zip.

Has anyone gotten Leviathan to work under OSX yet?

EDIT: oh and DirectX has been there and is there. Always installing with it.

Okay TellTale, we know you don't normally provide support with Mac issues, but could you at least tell us if you changed anything about the installer or startup of this game so we can investigate solutions or at least identify the problem?

Having the same problem... been so excited all day about playing, and now I can't :( Surely there is a Tech Whizz somewhere that can solve this for us. I will pay kindly in Grog!
  • edited September 2009
Honestly if it's out on steam before they find a fix I *may* just buy the episode there >.>

im having the same problem with my episode 3 as well. im having the same problem with the wallace and gromit episode "muzzled". this is really starting to aggravate me.

a friend of mine had the same problem with episode 2 of monkey island but ep2 works fine for me.

what version of crossover games is everybody using? i dunno if that matters? but im using 7.1.1
  • edited September 2009
crossover 8.0 for me, doesn't work. wait, ToddD, does the steam version work?
  • edited September 2009
I havent tried the steam version yet but it is listed as officially supported and doesn't require any jiggering with IE6 like the TTG download.
  • edited September 2009
I experienced the same problem as everyone above.

However, after having upgraded to Crossover Games 8.0 the game didn't fail in exactly the same way as before. In fact, I got the IE welcome page and was able to press the start button before the following error message was presented:

    """
The program MonkeyIsland103.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

This can be caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in Wine. You may want to check http://appdb.winehq.org for tips about running this application.

If this problem is not present under Windows and has not been reported yet, you can report it at http://bugs.winehq.org.
    """

This does not help me much though. I don't have the competence to work this out. Anyone else?

PS. I haven't really looked in the wine appdb of wine, or reported the bug.

Okay this was happening to me when I reinstalled crossover on one of my other macs after upgrading to snowleopard for all three episodes.

HOWEVER on my personal mac I already had crossover trial, installed 1 BEFORE snowleopard, upgraded, bought crossover, downloaded and activated it, my bottles from the trial were still there, installed 2 into the same bottle as 1, and it worked.

MAYBE when I get home 3 will work, though I'm starting to doubt it. Has anyone heard anything about what might be causing this or contacted Crossover?

I ran chapters 1 and 2 (non-Steam) on Mac OS 10.5 using standard CrossOver 8 and the Internet Explorer 6 trick; Lair of the Leviathan installed, but didn't run. What finally worked was to switch over to CrossOver Games 8, in a new bottle with the CrossOver HTML engine installed (not sure if that last bit was actually necessary, though).

d arthur ain't no joke! while the launch menu that employs ie6 doesnt load, i do get a screen where i can enter the serial and launch the game. thank you thank you. its not perfect, but at least i can play the episode now.

    thanks again david

I eventually just gave up trying to run it in Crossover and pulled out my old, crappy, falling-apart Dell laptop. Desperate times, and all that. :p
  • edited September 2009
Bootcamp probably would have been the better choice :D

This worked for me; I'll be using this for all future chapters since I know it works and it uses actual full screen! :-D

I've run all of the monkey episodes with bootcamp and have had no issues what so ever. Gave windows a 20gb partition and haven't looked back.

Got it to work eventually following David Arthur's suggestion.

    Here's the summary:

    - Crossover Games 8
    - Make new bottle. You do not have to do the windows version trick (i.e. install in win98 bottle and then fool tomi to think it is xp by changing the os version using the bottle configuring tool.) Instead, just make it an xp bottle (at least that's what I did).
    - No need to install crossover html-engine, since it comes pre-installed with xp-bottles.
    - Install Lair of Leviathan in the newly created bottle.
    - Remember to set the graphics. ManageBottles -> Control Panel -> winecfg -> Graphics. Check out the Virtual Desktop checkbox.

    This makes the game run.

However, there still might be a couple of issues.
    - The mouse is not very responsive inside the game.
    - The wine desktop doesn't quit easily as the game i quit.
  • edited September 2009
The mouse responsiveness seemed to be tied to graphics quality. CrossOver Games 8 allows me to set the quality as high as 9, but once I reduced it to 3 (the highest I'd been allowed in standard CrossOver) the mouse responded properly again. I couldn't see any significant differences, so it's possible CrossOver wasn't rendering the high-quality effects properly anyway.

Apart from the need to force shut down the bottle when I'm done (and after I first entered the game's serial number), this is the simplest and most elegant means of running a Telltale game I've found yet.
  • edited September 2009
David, the difference in the graphics qualities are very minimal (lighting, depth of field effects etc.)

I've mentioned on other threads: Parallels is a great way to run Windows on your mac and a lot simpler than Crossover and less hassle than Bootcamp.

    I recommend it highly.
  • edited September 2009
When I first started playing it was a bit choppy and the mouse responsiveness wasn't great.

My advice: give it a second or two. Take the graphics down a notch or two but dont get drastic just yet. After about 5 - 10 minutes of playing it was COMPLETELY SMOOTH. It just needed to gain some momentum first, it seemed

hey I just tried to install it on crossover 8 games with the standard html engine but i'm getting that same error where it justs is a white screen asking for my serial and when i enter it, it does nothing.

anyonw know how i can get around that?

i installed episode 2 find on regular crossover 8 but when installing ep 3 i get the same error other peopel are having.
  • edited October 2009
When I ran it, I got that same white screen asking for the serial number, which went blank when I entered it. This didn't mean that it had failed to register, though, because when I forced the bottle to shut down and then started Chapter 3 again, I got the proper 'Click here to run the game' link. What's the precise procedure that you're following?
  • edited October 2009
I created a new bottle in crossover 8. then install episode 3. when i start up i get the serial number thing and nothing happens. i'll try forcing a restart and seeing if anything happens, but it doesn't seem to.
  • edited October 2009
    crossover 8 games that is.
  • edited October 2009
yeah it wont work until you try starting it up again, then the click here to run the game link will appear
  • edited October 2009
i dont understand because for me everything i quit out of crossover games and start it back up, i still get to the "serial number" white page....
  • edited October 2009
For me, Ingar's solution works fine, thanks!

And there are some differences in the graphics quality. You'll see it immediately, when you switch from 3 to 4 or 5: the 'back'-sign in the settings screen gets immediately brighter. And that's of course not the only change it does :-)
I set the graphics quality to 8 and for now I am happy with it.

To anyone who got the "serial number white page":
Do you have Internet Explorer 6 installed in the bottle?

Lair of the Leviathan works perfectly (for me) in CrossOver Games.
What you have to do is follow the instructions on this page to install iE 6 in the bottle, and add D3DX9_41.dll in the Lair of the Leviathan directory, as explained in this thread in the Telltale support forums.

    Good luck!

    awesome!!!

thanks so much. i actually got it working in crossover (the same bottle i was playing episode 2 in) but copying over that dll file.

    thanks for the tip!

I say use Bootcamp and install XP/VISTA/WIN7 to run things... then you have a native Windows OS running next to OSX, and you don't need any emulating software or Virtual Machines.

Then again, with CrossOver, you don't need Windows ;)

It's curious that it isn't working the same way for all of us. For me, Lair of the Leviathan worked perfectly (apart from the aforementioned caveats regarding the launcher) in CrossOver Games 8 with nothing other than the CrossOver HTML engine.

I'm still getting it's encountered a serious problem.

    any other ideas? : )

Did you install D3DX9_41.dll in the Lair of the Leviathan directory in the game's bottle?
If not, read my second-to-last post (post #34) in this thread and follow the links as necessary.
    Hope it helps!
