SMI:SE in HD

I found something out last night. Everyone's on one side or the other about SMI:SE look. Some say it's ugly some like it. I liked it. But after playing the game in 1680x1050 on a 22" widescreen monitor it's a whole different ball game. I'd say this game is meant to be played in high resolutions. You just can't appreciate it the same way in a lower resolution. I recommend you all to try it that way if you can if you haven't already whether you already love it or not. If you do you might just like it better, if you don't it may just change your opinion. HD is niiiiiiiice.

1680x1050? I play it on 1920x1080. The way it was meant :)

and I totally agree. I have a laptop with like 1024x600 resolution, and it's not the same...

Well that's as high as I could manage. I've been running on a lowly 1024x768 monitor before now. So this is really for those who were unfortunate like me.

Guybrush's hair is ugly no matter what resolution it's in! Looks like he escaped from a 90s boy band.

Maybe, but still. You have to be at least a little less put off by everything else in a higher resolution if you were sheltered under 640x480 or something.

That said, I really liked the updated backgrounds (especially the huge moon), and went "wow" every time I toggled between original/SE. :)

on the mixnmojo forums they have patches where they make the hair like the original but with HD graphics instead of that lame surfer dude look.

Also there is a patch with new MUCH better backgrounds thats worth a try, though its not complete yet.

Well, the game was meant to be played in HD, so it´s normal that it looks much better that way.

A lot of people complain about the Guybrush´s hair in the special edition, but i think that they are forgetting that, in the original game, Guybrush´s hair (and his look in general) wasn´t exactly in fashion.

I never thought about his hair at all when I played the original. I never thought about his hair when I first saw the Special Edition either. I don't see what the fuss is all about.

Either way, I don't want a Guybrush's Hair thread derail. There have been enough threads about that already.

Nice find! Can't believe this was right under my nose the whole time

But back to the subject, the game really does look beautiful in HD, it's amazing the difference it can make even to simple 2D art :)

How cool is that?! I could really go for a 22" monitor running at 1920x1080 right now. :)

    1920x1200 in 24" here. Not that it's a competition.

At 1920x1200 the artwork is still rubbish.

It's all adobe illustrator vectors; how exactly is making the art bigger, making it better?

Personally, I played it on my widescreen TV, and although I didn't much like the character redesigns, the backgrounds and so forth were pretty beautiful.

Yeah, both the process and the artwork itself are quite bad in SE. I was furious that I couldn't play it with the old graphics but the new sound.

Overall, I like the Special Edition graphics. It reminds me of the style in some of Berke Breathed's storybooks. If it has one flaw, I don't like how it retains the exact same framerate as the original; I think smoother animations would make it look better.

I think it'd also be nice to get the new sound with the old graphics, but the new graphics take such full advantage of an HD monitor that it's hard for me to turn them off, except for the occasional comparison.

Plus, the new graphics included Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle references. (Sadly, the latter was at the expense of the Sam and Max cameo, but STILL.)

I played it on my HDTV on my Xbox, and I couldn't play for a prolonged period
    It hurt my eyes.
The animations were clumsy adn just ugly...

Played it in 1920x1080 from the start, still found it butt-ugly.

Yeah, resolution doesn't help a generic art style.

Ok, animations and character styles aside, the backgrounds DO look gorgeous in HD. Especially when you've been playing it in 1024x768 or lower the whole time and suddenly made a switch.

I played it in 1920x1080 on my 47" LCD TV and it was gorgeous.

I've also played the original on the same TV, and while it was fun too, it showed its age.

Is this going to be one of those "Yes, they do!" - "No, they don't!" discussions? :D
I loved the background art in the original, but this just looks like a hobbyist flash-game to me, HD or not. And I'm not just talking about the really gross stuff like copy&paste-jungle or the old graphics peeking over the new (tree stumps), but the art style just doesn't do it for me. Resolution won't change that.
