Too easy?

edited October 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
Hello,

I really don't mean to be a jerk here or anything... but has anybody found the chapters to be a little on the easy side? Personally, I'm spending about 3 hours/chapter.

I think much of why boils down to the format. The worlds just aren't that big - in part because of the chapter formats. The result is that you don't have 30 things in your inventory that you're not sure what to do with... and you don't have 10 strange places that you're not sure how they matter.

I don't know... maybe it's just me... I've loved the games... and these ones have been great... but at the same time, they don't seem as challenging as the older ones...

Have you taken some time of your day to look in the forum if there is a similar thread about this or you just wanted to share quickly how easy it was for you?

And to quote myself from another thread :
Well I do think the perfect balance between hard and logical puzzles is found in these chapters. I don't want puzzles which are completely illogical just to make the game a little bit longer and to satisfy someone who always complains there is no monkey wrench puzzle. And I'm glad this is the way.

They aren't as challenging, but these days all games aren't as challenging. People aren't as willing to put up with the frustrations of past games.

However, you have to account for the fact that you've been playing adventure games for how long now? Obiously you're going to get better at them and see puzzles more clearly then you did before.

I will agree that less items coupled with less interactable objects makes puzzle solving immensly easier though.

True - and especially odd considering many people have practically got 24/7 internet access in order to view walkthroughs and guides should they need them.

Exactly. In fact usually if you get stuck you can just type a few keywords into google and get a hint just by the google website preview text bits without having to root through a walkthrough and risk seeing spoilers.

There are several points in these chapters too where people who hadn't played any Monkey Island before would likely be stumped for ages. MI fans know what kind of random things may be solutions so can work out what to do pretty fast. The biggest way in which these are easier is in the control method. One click to interact is far simpler than "Push" "Pull" etc.

Yep... I do miss the verbs. I know people would argue that by having only one function it rules out the need for the inevitable 'try everything' method but I like having the option to pick up / look at / pull etc an item... and of course Guybrush's responses to your requests are sometimes worth it alone!

It's never fun being totally stuck on something, especially when you can't even see a route to your goal but for me it's less fun always knowing exactly what to do and how to get there.

For me Tales so far is rated as thus

    Graphics - 8/10
    Storyline - 9/10
    Music - 7/10
Sound (incl voice acting) - 8/10
    Difficulty 6/10
    Controls 7/10
    OVERALL 8/10
