Elaine's changing eye color

So... not that I'm complaining or anything, but why have Elaine's eyes changed color from blue to green?

Her eyes were blue in the VGA version of MI1:

And blue again in CMI:

Now they're green:

So why the change?

Perhaps Elaine's TMI look was partly based on Steve Purcell's MI movie Elaine design (with green eyes)?

Better match with her poxy skin. :D

Then again, her hair changed from brown to red as well.

I know her eyecolour. It's the color of the ocean after a storm. :p

I've been wondering about her changing eye color as well. Didn't they do their research at Telltale?

Her hair was always red. At least in the VGA version of SMI. Just like Guybrush was always blond, except in the EGA version.

EDIT: By the way, where did you get that pretty screenshot of TMI Elaine, ATMachine?

I would guess by playing the game or google image search

I meant the close-up of Elaine from Tales he showed us. I don't remember a scene like that in the games, so it must have appeared somewhere else.

That image was everywhere before the first episode came out.... as well as the Guybrush picture with the cutlass and rootbeer with the orange sky behind him before they changed the scene to a stormy rainy night scene.

It "was" - guess I missed it then.

I'd imagine that it was a color coordination thing -- doing what looked good. It's a continuity goof, I suppose (though as pointed out, her eye color has changed before), but hopefully a forgivable one.

It's ok... but Guybrush really should have noticed. Typical man!

I forgive you, too. Happened before, no big, just made me wonder.

Like he noticed her different voice in EMI? :p

I like her green eyes better.... When I painted her I gave her green eyes too.

Looks like she's had just about every eye colour there is to have!

I like the green eyes / red hair combo. Telltale did a great job with their main character designs.

Its possible she had them changed with a minor voodoo curse.... you can explain anything with voodoo.

Or coloured contact lenses were invented earlier than originally thought... :p

Beekay: The TMI Elaine image was from a promotional pic Telltale released before Episode 1 (not an in-game screenshot, but it uses Elaine's in-game model).

Also, thanks for supplying the image from MISE, Pale Man. I guess green eyes are just what looks "best" with red hair?

PS: in regards to EMI, I forgot - her eyes are various colors in-game (she has more than one character model, since she has a couple different outfits) but on the box art at least her eyes are green. I guess this might not be Telltale's fault after all!

    Pillow-shading makes puppies cry.

To stay on topic... I blame Gubrush. Since he had blue eyes, someone decided to give Elaine green ones.

And as for the hair, she probably ran out of Red Dye nr.2

I don't really mind the change, mind you (and in fact, I'd argue green eyes are officially canon now for Elaine, given the "eyes as green as summer grog" line in Spinner Cay). I'm more... bemused than anything else.

Of course this isn't to go anywhere near Steve Purcell's two concept roughs for the MI2 cover painting, which show Elaine with BLACK hair! Her appearance has been variable for quite a while now.

    Whoa now...where are these concepts?

Good job! TTG is finally exposed as the bastardized devils they really are! They thought they had it lol...but oh oh oh nooo...they forgot a simple thing..you're going down TTG. Down the drain. To the sewers and rats and rotten corpses where you belong.

where can i see these MI2 cover concepts
  • edited October 2009
I think they gave her green eyes because it's a scientific fact that green eyes and red hair go together really well.

It feels kinda like we've had loads of different women called Elaine throughout the series. They only feel loosely connected (even with regards to things other than appearance and accent).

The MI2 cover concepts are shown in the book Rogue Leaders: The Story of LucasArts, by Rob Smith, Chronicle Books, 2008.

I swear her eyes are purple in the first one. Guybrush's too.

Edit: Also, it's really hard to tell but in Escape her eyes look brown.

Look at her eye next to Guybrush here. Clearly purple.

Yes because a carving of a person is ALWAYS accurate.
    I've got it installed.
I'll go and check some time.

    Infact they are black/brown here.

Yeah, I dunno why Escape always gets such a bad rap. Sure, it wasn't the best game it the series, but I liked it a lot. Oh well, to each his own.
