Sam and Max

I really hope they are hidden in Tales of monkey Island somewhere.... I have not seen them yet but it is a tradition and since TTG makes the S&M games it should be ok for them to throw them in.

They can show up in the courtroom! "He stole our third season!"

    ...

    Too much?

LOL I actually think that idea is brilliant

That's because Lucasarts don't have the rights to Sam and Max.

But if you switch it over, they're there.

Yeah but that is probably because that was the original art and it's completely unchanged.

there's a sam and max visual reference in 103. it was still there last i looked. kinda subtle and you had to play season 2 to get it

    Clamshell?

hey! ya. wasn't sure if it was too subtle

I noticed the shell, too. They should have put Max's ears on it. XD

    Yeah well....subtle is bad.

Hehe, cameo time? Maybe D'Oro could play with a couple of Action Figurines of Sam or Max. Or maybe you can throw in a voodoo doll somewhere. Well, maybe not.
  • edited October 2009
And the rat in 101 was Jimmy, or at least the same model as him.
  • edited October 2009
I was hoping the S&M reference would be more like an actual image of them.
  • edited October 2009
Wait! So the clamshell was a Sam and Max reference? I htought it was just a subtle concidence...

    That would be hilarious!
But they would have to hire Sam's Voice Actor just for that one line, and we all know that Sam & Max Season 3 is coming next...

The S&M references in 1&2 were in pictoral form and Guybrush could make a comment. To bring them into the courtroom, while for me would be awesome, doesn't follow on too nicely (especially as there's no reference to them at all in CMI and EMI).
  • edited October 2009
I'm sure they could slip in a few MI lines into a recording session for one of the S&M episodes if TT wished to go down that route.

There are Sam & Max references in the later two Monkey island games. In Curse, one of the shapes the stage lights in the theatre can make is Max's head. And the emblem of Big Whoop is a Max and Crossbones.

Maybe it should've been called the Curse of Max's Terrifying Head.

And in Escape, one of the possible aliases for Pegnose Pete is Sam N. Max. I don't know what that means because I haven't played it, but that's what all the websites say.

I can't believe I forgot about the stage lights in the Puerto Pollo Theatre! *holds head in shame*

I guess I haven't played EMI the hundred times required to get Sam N. Max on
    Dead-Eye Dave's Filomatic
. 20 times is enough for anyone in 10 years.

EDIT: Max is on one of the faces of the aforementioned puzzle in EMI! Plz forget I said anything about Sam & Max only cropping up in the first two games. *hides*

Theres subtle references. Like in 102, "Who would hide a piece of paper inside a toy?"

Reference to chariots of the dogs right there.
  • edited October 2009
that's just as easily an inside joke between two of the puzzle programmers.

    It was a reference

I think thats because Steve Purcell didn't work on the games..he was the one who usually threw them in there.

It's already been established that they were in the games, keep reading.

What/where were they? I either missed them or completely forgot :)

Edit: Ooh, Max was one of the idols near the giant monkey head in SMI, right?

Correct. The other one was at the dress end of the costume shop in MI2.

The Sam & Max reference in SoMI has been removed, so my guess is that an actual direct graphical reference won't be showing up in any episode.

It was removed because LucasArts doesn't have the Sam and Max rights anymore. Telltale, on the other hand...

    That would be great!

I also noticed the DotT image cover the S&M image in MI SE. Noticed the clamshell too. And yeah I'm pretty sure that was also the same rat model in 101 as in the S&M games. [not HTR of course]

It's been removed because Telltale now holds the rights to Sam & Max, so if Lucasarts were to use them they'd have to pay. And since they were redrawing everything anyways, they just decided to change it with one of their own franchises.

Ha, I agree. A max-shaped clam complete with ears would be the perfect level of reference.

And I sort of wish that in the SoMI SE that they could have just "traced" the little sam&max idol, smoothed it out, without adding any new detail, like they did for the other idols. It would probably actually end up looking less like Sam and Max, but the subtle reference would still be intact. The Purple Tentacle idol, while perfectly posed, stands out a bit too much.

I was sad they took out Sam and Max but Purple Tentacle was a good substitute.
