Where the...Darkness?

One of the things I always remember from the old Monkey Island games, particularly Curse, is the "darkness". The whole Blood Island thing, for example, was so damned...dark...that it was really memorable and atmospheric.

So far no darkness in Tales, unfortunately (but still a great game). Will it come, or has MI taken a turn for the happier?

Yeah I know exactly what you mean I am hoping that we will still see it.

LeChuck's Revenge was the best game for that atmosphere - I still get chills at some parts when I replay it now.
I really hope Tales manages to incorporate some of the "darkness", Spinner Cay was halfway there but not quite up to scratch.

I think the last two chapters will catch up on that "darkness" most certainly. There might be a couple of characters carrying out their master plans which will be revealed in EP5 latest. And those master plans sure are evil and dark. ;)

Guybrush better beware the hangman's noose! More so, Flotsam at night then just before dawn, what with the Mad Doctor on the prowl...

I am a man who walks alone
And when I'm walking a dark road
At night or strolling through the park

When the light begins to change
I sometimes feel a little strange
A little anxious when its dark

Fear of the dark, fear of the dark
I have a constant fear that someone's always near
Fear of the dark, fear of the dark
I have a phobia that someone's always there

I have a feeling Flotsam will have just what you're looking for in Episode 4. I just have this feeling we'll be seeing nighttime in Episode 4 through the whole chapter, along with a darker turn in story.

    I really hope so

Would a trial take place at night though?

Would a trial take place at night though?

Doesn't matter. It's in a building, with very few (if any) windows.
  • edited October 2009
it could happen at night on a pirate island.

I'd laugh so hard if the trial isn't on Flotsam. It'd just be too unexpected! Just thinking about the possibility of it is making me laugh! :D

Both Santino and Noogie have been murdered in cold blood. That's plenty dark

Trial wil be on Scabb Island, and the judge will be the Voodoo Priest/ess from LeChuck's Revenge. Nobody said ANYTHING about a FAIR trial. Largo will be guarding Guybrush, so he doesn't escape - from one of Stan's Cozy Tombs. Stan will be living in a tomb next to yours - because he finds those tombs "too darn cozy!" for him not to use it. You'll have to make a deal with him so he can help you get out of the tomb. Largo currently rents the tomb Guybrush is in, but Stan is a business man, and one who happily accepts bribes.

It doesn't have to be dark, you know. Bright colours and warm sunlight are pretty alluring as well.

Lighting would be the easiest way to make Chapter 4 look different from 1 however, using hte same models. It makes sense to have it at night.

Well, it's been sunset for a long time now so I'm guessing that it'll get dark in the game pretty soon :p...

What do you mean with darkness? Atmosphere? Because Blood Island was far away from darkness. It’s quite the opposite, this island is very beautiful! I just love the map-music.

Well, if you ment the »no light«-darkness, then forget what I was saying.

    Wait, Noogie's dead?
Supposedly, when you talk to one of DeCavas crew at the end, they say Noogie's not there because he "did not agree with abandoning democracy." Hints to that they killed him. I doubt it though.

I hope there are some dark "Melee Island" styled scenes in the
last two chapters ... and if i remember there was a statement from
one of the Telltale Team that there will be some places to visit
    at "Night"

By the way... why not some parts of the Treasure Hunting
making at Night... like in the good old Times in the Dschungle
    on Melee Island :D

i dunno about you guys but the sunset scenes always give me the monkey island shivers. i dunno , to me tomi always feels the best at that time

I dislike the sunsets myself. I just dislike that general color scheme. It's just too bright on my eyes. However, it is nice to see something different in a Monkey Island game. On the other hand, don't fix it if it's not broken.

I like the variety more than any one particular scene or time of day. The storm, sunset, and star-studded night sky have all been very atmospheric and greatly added to the mood of the game, as well as helping to make each location distinct and providing a sense of the passage of time.
  • edited October 2009
Wouldn't mind a couple more storms and a little nighttime.
  • edited October 2009
I can see both remaining chapters being at night
  • edited October 2009
But I can also see ch4 being at different lights to show passage of time and ch5 being at sunset
  • edited October 2009
yeah that darkness is sorely missing. and not just night-time, just the atmosphere. it should feel like Pirates of the Caribbean (the ride), where you've just entered a world that's dark and scary and lawless. so far, TOMI (even ch. 3) all feels like each scene is made just for you, rather than bringing you into a bigger world.

Democracy, or Morgan? I'm hoping this means he's still on your boat somewhere then. I just don't see any of them capable of killing Noogie. Especially since they didn't seem to have any swords or pointy things on them.
In other news, how did I miss that line of dialog? Twice? It boggles my mind.

    They heavily hint that
they've murdered him. "He's, uh, moved to a farm upstate."

Quite honestly, that's pretty dark. Not, you know, Vengeance trilogy dark, but still: pretty dark.

Someone should make a "Noogie lives!" (or alternatively "Noogie isn't dead", "Noogie is alive" etc) website, where any sightings of Noogie can be recorded ...
