From the one screenshot we've seen, it LOOKS like they'll keep the static pattern. Although that would be REALLY hard to do in 3D, so maybe not.
Not really hard at all. Hard to make it look "right," sure, and certainly hard to wrap one's brain around, but on a basic level that "flat pattern" effect is, in a lot of ways, easier than doing a regular texture that wraps around a model in 3D.
They were able to do it in Escape From Monkey Island years ago, so I'm not worried... I'm actually impressed by the screenshot because unlike EMI, he actually has 3D shading this time, and it looks much better (and will make the effect even more trippy)
I'm more curious about how they'll animate him now. In the first two games, it made sense to just have a looping animation of crazy arm flailing, since the graphics were limited and his speech was all text, but in both CMI and EMI, it just seemed arbitrary that he was pointing and waving in random directions for no reason. I'd really like to see them maintain that level of hyperactivity but have him making specific gestures and pointing at specific things and whatnot in a way that it relates to the words he's saying as he says them. Just make him gesture like a normal enthusiastic person was but to a ridiculous extent and at ridiculous speed, that's what I'd do
Looking forward to see how TTG interprets Stan's excessive flapping of arms and mouth.
Re-watching those clips from the old MI games reminded me of how much I loved MI2 and the genius of the coffin scene in CMI. TTG handled Murray well, so I can't wait to meet Stan!

I don't care because no matter how this guy looks like he get's on my nerves. One of the seldom parts were TSOMI sucked. He and those Soda Poppers...*buhuhuu*...can't he just inspect my cannon and let me just for one more time enjoy the...
But hey, finally, the tavern, i'll probably gonna need lot's of grog in this one.
Stan is definitely one of my favorite MI characters. I'm sure he's in good hands with Telltale.
One aspect you guys didn't seem to start discussing was the music. It's interesting that the first notes from Stan-MI2Theme were related to the death-march-theme (we all know that one). In CMI that seemed logical, with the cemetary and all. In EMI there was no death-scene, no coffins, and still you can hear the first notes played again, in the same manner...
I am really curious to see what is Michael going to do with his theme this time. How can you enhance such a simple yet catchy theme?

True, but if I remember correctly, some other notes from the same Stan-theme were related to the wedding-march-theme (we all know that one too), which was composed by the same composer who made that death-march-theme (Felix Mendelssohn), if I'm not wrong.
In EMI there was no death-scene, no coffins, and still you can hear the first notes played again, in the same manner...
Well, for one thing, EMI reused some things from CoMI, even the main theme music was imported with no change into EMI - you can ever hear the "bang" when LeChuck is supposed to "cut the screen" with his sword in the end of the theme song, only nothing happens in EMI. I always thought that was cheap... Yeah, I'd hate to see an EMI-like incarnation of Stan... yuck!
Now, a little question, guys...
What do you think: where does this idea of Stan's plaid blue/purple shirt that has a "magical" (kinda) static pattern that doesn't change when you move comes from? I think it might have originally come from the fact that it was harder to create and animate a character in 320x200 VGA (or something like that) in a plaid shirt that would actually respond to the movements (without the animation becoming jerky and vague)... But then again, how come they kept the idea later in CoMI, when it stopped being an issue? Simply because it looked cool and helped define the unique character?... Or is there more to it? Or maybe there was some bigger idea behind it from the start? Of course, right now I can't even imagine Stan without his trademark plaid shirt, it's just that I'd love to know where it originally came from and how it came to remain throughout the entire series.

The Unmoving Plaid phenomenon is a recurring joke/budget-saving measure in a lot of different cartoons and comics. It didn't originate with Monkey Island, and I think it was almost certainly intentional even in MI1 and MI2.
With a character like stan, you can judge him from a picture, because for me what i like about stan is he's faster than light moving arms and mount, no matter the detail if the doesnt have those features well he just wont be the same im afraid.
Crazy ARMS! i know some people talks with their arms, but Stan takes it to the extreme that makes it cool and makes sure he isnt just another boring bland character to look at, at some point i hope Telltale can create just one memorable character like stan or murray.
He looks a bit fat and especially his head does not seem to have the old proportions, but I'll wait to see him in action, this will be the most important.

Yes ... the first ten times it happened! Get out of my head!

Sort of national humour fad - after this guy:

It appears Poland has no sense of humour.
