Way too dark (lightning related)

Hey guys, chapter 4 seems cool but its way too dark to appreciate it and there aren't any controls in the settings panel to brighten things up quite a bit, wouldn’t like to mess with my monitor's settings since i have it configured for my work.

Is there a work around this darkness problem?

I'm not sure if there are settings in the game for it, but you could either adjust it via your monitor or through your video card's software (depending on your card). Just write down the current settings first. It's probably easiest to do it in software if you can. For example, the brightness in the control panel for my NVidia card is set to 50% (I do the primary tweaking on the monitor). This would make it easy to turn it up for the game, then just set it back to 50% when done.

There may be an option in the game as a hidden "tweak" but I don't know about it if there is. Hope this helps at all! :)

Actually, if you're going the graphics card control panel route you'll want to up the gamma setting, or you're going to get gray for black and white for everything that's already bright.

I upped my gamma setting in ATI's Catalyst Control Center from 1.0 to 1.4 while playing and was a happy camper... though your preferred setting might of course vary... :)

I haven't had any problems with the level of lighting in Chapter 4. No part of the screen is too dark. I've had really bad monitors in the past, but since getting my Dell flat panel a couple of years ago everything has looked incredible.

A good monitor, and properly calibrated display settings can make a huge difference.

    Too much darkness now?

    TTG can never win! :)

it was perfect.... OP must have their settings really dark on their monitor

I had to change my video card brightness settings before changing back after completing.
It's not a major thing but it is there.

I agree it was really too dark in places. Sometimes I was unable to see in the town, for example near DeSinge´s mansion.

The game has no gamma-setting, and my monitor won´t allow it either. So maybe adding such a thing would be a good idea for the DVD version.

Or make sure your next monitor has a 1000:1 contrast ratio and 500 candle brightness ;)

If you're worried about losing your monitor settings for work, can't you just write down your current settings so you can set them back the way they were after you're finished playing chapter 4?

maybe a touch, but i thought i was good. i like the mood of monkey island in the dark, with the glowing windows and candles and such. however i'm just not a big fan of TTG's graphics, there's no grit or scope to anything.

I have a new LG 22" flat screen monitor and an nvidia gforce 8800GT, so the problem is not with the hardware.
I have it calibrated so when i print images they print exactly as seen in the monitor, those that say they see it fine might have those settings way high.

Episode 3 was "dark" but was well illuminated, episode 4 is not well illuminated at all.

The "concept" of being in the night with lights coming from a few candles, and so everything is 100% dark is not well established, there is a full moon glowing in the background yet there isn’t a light source that reflects this.

And what’s the point in making the game SOO dark that you cant see a thing anyway, at least in doom they gave you a lantern (if at least the leg lamp could have been used to lighten the path).

With a gamma setting this could have passed a bit since one crank the setting to be able to see something, but having to mess with the video card or monitor settings is not a good thing.

Im not implying nor saying the episode is bad, just the lightning is really terrible and need a brightness/gamma setting ingame or work a bit more on the lights.

It looked pretty dark on my monitor too but I decided to play it on my TV where it was much bigger and brighter.

Yes, you can mess with the gamma settings in your video card, but having a proper Gamma slider inside the game can't hurt and should be easy enough to implement.

At least the major issue TTG games had (not having all system resolutions available) has been finally fixed at last! (from ToMI episode 2 onwards).

Well, I think its just to do with the lighting in the room where you have your computer. For me, I'm in a room that's mixed between light and dark, so the screen will always be fine, no matter what time of the day I'm playing, although with chapter 4, nighttime is the best time to play, not just for mood, but to get the best lighting possible.

I think the fourth chapter was supposed to be a little darker to make puzzle solving (finding items) more difficult, but that's a guess.
Funnily enough, I even turned my graphic card's gamma settings a little lower so some corners in the game were hardly visible - I liked that, added a little more mystery to the chapter. :)

I also had issues with the total lack of lightning in Chapter 4. I mean, c'mon!

My monitor is just dark in general, but that is just because my monitor is a really bad acer something, I have to turn the lighting all the way up to 100, when its normally at 80, to see what happens. But I am soon going to get a 24' widescreen from Samsung, which I hope is brighter. But I just can't wait till I get to play ToMI on a widescreen :)

Chapter 4 was fine for me; chapter 5 had some dark areas that weren't all that easy to see. I put it down to my LCD screen though; Monkey Island's not the first game I've had this trouble with. (even changing the brightness and contrast doesn't do my screen a lot of good)

TMI is to dark bring back the light

I could barely see Chapter 4, and most of the chapters are too dark. Though it's worse for me in MacOS than in Windows.

A gamma option would be way appreciated.
