Tales DVD by Christmas?

Too much to ask?

I'm not familiar with TTG's turnaround time for a finished season to DVD, but I'd love to give Tales of MI to my younger siblings to unwrap this Christmas. How long has it taken for their previous titles?

5-6 months after the end of a season.

der_ketzer seems to know how long it takes TellTale normally, but for sure Christmas is too soon.

I think we'll be lucky to see Ep5 in November. And once it's done, they've still got to put together the whole package. It's not like they're just going to take the 5 episodes, burn then to a DVD-R and ship 'em out.

They've got a lot to do before they can even release it to manufacturing, and manufacturing takes time too.

    5-6 months sound pretty reasonable.

Really? That's a lot longer than I expected. It seems like preparations for distribution should have been started well before the fifth chapter is released. I can understand Christmas being too soon, but half a year to compile five episodes and deliver a DVD? That's a long time!

Maybe the experience provided by the last few games (Sam & Max, Strong Bad, Wallace and Gromit) has helped to accelerate the process? But then, I guess there still going to be a lot of quirks to polish out of each episode and extra features to throw into the mix too, so it'll be worth the wait, I'm sure.

To make the most recent example, the last episode of Wallace and Gromit's Grand Adventures came out on July 29th, and they're just taking pre-orders now. It took them just over four months to start taking pre-orders.

In a slightly less recent example, the SBCG4AP took about a month and a half between pre-order and actual shipment.

So yeah. Even given the most recent examples available, the 5-6 month estimate seems pretty likely.

Maybe you get an easter-DVD. Maybe.
  • edited November 2009
Yeah, that may be a long time but imagine all that can be done with the DVD. That's gonna be one very crisp game when they release it. They're probably going to fix all the bugs, add more graphics, like having stars in the night at the end of Siege as it was at the start of Lair, and maybe even add more dialogue. I can wait an extremely long time for that DVD since they're going to make it as crisp as possible and we'll have all five episodes for that wait. Yeah, it would make a swell Christmas gift, but you have to sacrifice a little in this case for the greater good.

By the sounds of this thread, it sounds like it'll be out right around my birthday! :D

Just remember that they weren't initially planning an SBCG4AP DVD. They've come out and said there's going to be a Tales DVD, so it should be out much quicker than usual.

So, what prompted you to decide to pull this bit of "information" from your ass? Why did you, upon making this up, then decide to ignore the Wallace and Gromit example we have now?

I think you're overestimate what will be done to the games. Sure, any major bugfixes will be incorporated (but most have been released with updates to the downloadable versions already).

It's the /bonus content/ that will take some time to put together, they don't need to rush that :)

"Available at the end of the season"
  • edited November 2009
I don't think that's meant to mean literally "right when the season ends" so much as "after the season has been finished and we've had enough time to put it together". Bug fixes and other goodies take time, after all.

    Just submitting an observation.

An observation that is the same wording as the previous seasons. Nothing new here.

Have they actually said anything about the content of the DVD? They could just throw the current 4(+1) installers onto a dvd and nothing else and burn it. I don't want to speculate either way, but I think nothing has been promised so far?
  • edited November 2009
They tend to fix up a lot of the bugs but visually the game should be almost identical. Christmas is definitely too soon but with Tales being TTG's biggest project to date and there main focus with no other distractions or other projects it may come sooner than usual.

Here is a convenient list of special feature included in the package.

Edit: Never mind, I'm an idiot :S

No. Nothing has been promised but the old DVDs always had a lot of extras.

I'm actually kind of worried here. The Sam and Max DVDs always had commentaries, bits of the soundtrack, concept art, machinma shorts. There was tons of content there. But the SBCG4AP and now the W&G DVD are looking to be short on value in comparison. And the Steve Purcell cover art, something that was a given for the first two seasons of Sam and Max, was made a pre-order premium.

Did I miss something? Eulolia said that to his knowledge Telltale had not promised any DVD extras and I provided a link that had a list of the extras that would be presented on the disc. Unless you guys are talking about something else. I'm confused :S

I think we should ask Jake, Mighty Bonus DVD Designer (tm)

So... Jake, Any news? (other than "When It's done")

Edit: Have you ordered the disc? If so then maybe the link takes you to a different place...
You're missing that you're in the Tales of Monkey Island forum, not the Wallace and Gromit forum. :)

Ah! Sorry. I got messed up with having the links to both forums open at the same time :o My bad!

Okay. There is no commentaries any more but the shorts on W&G might be a much better choice for the fans of the series.
And I am quite happy with the content of the SBCG4AP-DVD.
I still need to order mine (Waiting for a Soundtrack of ToMI or the ToMI-DVD to order with the SB-DVD) but I know it will make me happy once it arrives.

Now that I know what forum I'm on lol I'll just say I would be dumbfounded if the Monkey Island DVD wasn't packed with extra features the likes of which at least rival what we've seen from the other bonus DVDs Telltale has produced. We won't be getting this one by Christmas. Sometime between the start of February and the end April would be a more realistic approximation, assuming the final chapter comes out in November.

I was already interested in picking up Telltale's other games (having only played the first two episodes of SBCG4AP on WiiWare before Tales drew me in), but all this talk about the previous DVD releases has me even more interested.

I could use one of those job things about now.

Seeing how I'll already have gotten a chance to play all the games in the series(except ch5) I'm not got to die if I have to wait 6 months to get the dvd version of something I've already beat. I don't want a rushed incomplete product for no reason.

    A... J-j-job?!

Sometimes I think about the £thousands I could have made if i'd worked since I was 15 to now (20). Then I remember I prize the ability to be a lazy b*****d more than being rich!

I'm not too bothered about having the DVD too soon. It won't be ready by Christmas unless TTG are wizards, and the eps are all for download on their site, so i'm happy waiting as long as it takes :)

Pfft, I have you beat. I turn 22 a week from today and have yet to have a job. My sister turns 20 three weeks from today and she's had three jobs already. It's great that I've been able to get away with it and focus on school instead, but it'd be nice to be able to buy things for a change. Things like Telltale's other games, for example.

I hear blackmail pays well. You just need to find out someone's dirty secret...!

Back on topic. I'm sure for bonuses they could get Dominic Armato to do just about anything for a reasonable price. He seems like as much of a fanboy as us.

Good Heavens. I'm turning 22 on the 22nd of this month and am working two jobs. I've had a total of five throughout my life.

Hey guys, just so you know, I'm always up for a "job". Let's say you have a bag of "hedge clippings", and you want it disposed of, no questions asked. No problem. Want help "resolving differences" with a particularly un-cooperative individual? I do that, too. I have tons of jobs, plenty of contacts.

Here's my card, kid. Stay in touch.

Back to the topic I really hope its loaded with concept art, like all of it.... plus audio commentary, it would be cool to get guest commentary from the likes of Ron Gilbert, and Tim Shafer to talk alongside Dave Grossman, to give the trio a chance to talk about the past and how it relates to the current games...

I'm in love with the possibilities
  • edited November 2009
That would be awesome! Man, I hope they jump on that idea.
