MonkeyThon 2009!

edited December 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
As if the world needed any MORE evidence of my complete dorkiness...I'm having a MonkeyThon!

Yes, folks, in order to prepare for "Rise of the Pirate God", I will spend the weekend replaying through ALL THE MONKEY ISLAND GAMES. (Yes, even "Escape from Monkey Island". It's still an official game, and despite the infuriating interface and plot holes you could fight a cow through, there's still a lot to enjoy in it.)

So, beginning at 5:30 PM this evening, I will begin playing "The Secret of Monkey Island". Once I finish, I will move onto "LeChuck's Revenge", followed by "Curse", then "Escape", and finally, all four currently-released chapters of "Tales". Obviously, I won't finish all in one night; I'll play until I get tired, then in the morning I'll continue where I left off, etc. I'll play all weekend if necessary!

Given the option, I'll be playing the hard version of each game. Furthermore, I will NOT be consulting any online hint guides or walkthroughs. In most cases, I will probably remember the puzzle solutions from my last playthroughs, but if I stumble across a puzzle I've forgotten (most likely in "Escape", which I've played least-recently), I'll just stare at it until I figure it out. Hence the potential taking-all-weekend.

And in case there were any lingering doubts about my insanity (or, for that matter, my inanity), I will naturally be tweeting my thoughts and observations as I play through the games, tagging each tweet #MonkeyThon09, so YOU can read just how frustrated I am when I can't find a pirate who knows the last insult swordfighting comeback!

I encourage other Monkey Island fans to participate in the MonkeyThon! There are only three requirements:

1. All of the Monkey Island games
2. A Twitter account
3. Absolutely no life to speak of.

The good news is, according to my observations, requirements 2 and 3 often go hand-in-hand! So please, play along, and tell us what YOU love (and hate) about each game as you revisit it!

Even if you don't own ALL the games, I still encourage you to replay the ones you do have in anticipation for the "Tales" conclusion. How ELSE are we supposed to raise our fanboy expectations to a level where they can never be satisfied?

I hope those of you who are almost as dorky as I am will enjoy joining me for MonkeyThon. I hope this weekend, we can all look toward the future, by playing LucasArts games from the past.

Its a tempting offer, but i dont have twitter too. Facebook is addicting enough and somehow i know Twitter is the same.

I was thinking on doing a monkey thon too but i started a naruthon since i havent watched the last 50 + episodes.

I don't have Twitter and I have Finals next week, so I don't fit requirements 2 or 3.

I've been doing the same, but over the past few weeks, and I didn't include Escape, mainly because I had less time for Monkey Island then I thought I would have, and when I finished Revenge, I had to choose between dropping Curse, dropping Escape, or dropping out of school. That choice was easily made. Anyway, I'm now in The Siege of Spinner Cay.

Pssh. I did this last weekend! :D Even Escape. And Grim Fandango!

I did this pretty much immediately after playing Trial and Execution the first time, but it took me a week. I'm going to try to get up early on Monday and do it all again in one day.

And I'm not going to say anything about Twitter because I'd like to try to keep my language clean.

See, it's less fun when you give yourself more time. This way, I'm more pressured to finish before Tuesday!

Plus, I have no social commitments this weekend.

Anyway. MonkeyThon is go. See you all on the other side!

In spite of my enthusiasm, and due to various bizarre twists of fate, I don't meet ANY of these requirements right now (I was aiming for "absolutely no life to speak of", but the people who hang out with me and call themselves "friends" say no - even though they teased me for taking December 9th off work). I feel very left out. :(

Also, I don't have Twitter. Coz I'm not gay. :p

That must mean that I'm not gay either! That'll teach 'em!

Eerhm... I'd love to engage in this kind of activity but unfortunately I don't have CMI or EMI discs around here and I'll probably be too busy packing my stuff and buying yule gifts for the kids in the family and most importantly putting in the last effort in college next week. I'm not even sure if I can play through the final chapter before my flight home (have to head to the train station at 4am on 10th Dec). I might do some sort of monkeythonkadon when I get back home tho ;)

Someone has to do a UStream (Livestreaming) Monkeython. :o Due to my internet connection (and a missing cd [EMI]), I cannot do this. :o

Go buddy go! I got your back! Kinda!

Though SPEAKING OF TWITTER, I'm liquidating Guybrush's estate on YeBay today... I keep finding all these strange codes? You guys have any insight on what they could be for?

I will so do this if I can figure out how Ustream works. I'll get back to you guys on it.

If I do, though, I'm going to have to cheat a bit at Escape. It always locks up on me after the Mysts o Tyme so I'll have to use an old save after I solve the puzzle, and I might use a save to skip the boulder puzzle if it gives me too much trouble, since the timing never works right.

Okay, I think I've got the hang of how Ustream works, except can anyone help me figure out how to broadcast from my monitor and speakers instead of my webcam and microphone?

Edit: Okay, I'm using Livestream. They have their own program that even has a built-in function for streaming video games. Only drawback is that I can only have 50 viewers, so if anyone thinks that 50 people would even be interested in watching some dork waste his day playing Monkey Island, feel free to suggest a better solution for setting up my desktop and speaker output as a virtual webcam.

I think I'm aiming to start SoMI at 9 AM MST (GMT -7) on Monday. Anyone have a preference on the original vs. Special Edition?

I'm testing it out, so if anyone wants to see me trying to get the games and Procaster working together correctly, here's the link.

Okay, if you get this to work, then your MonkeyThon TOTALLY blows mine out of the water. Kudos.

Yep, Icedhope and I took your idea and improved upon it. You're welcome to join us in The Great Monkey Island Race of 2009. You can participate over Twitter if you like, or I can try to help you get Procaster working. It's really not as difficult as you might think at first.

My personal MonkeyThon is complete, and it was delightful. I may have even persuaded one of my Twitter followers who's not a Monkey fan to check the games out, so I can call this a huge success.

Thanks to all who decided to join me on my self-indulgent little journey!
