Night scenes?

edited November 2006 in Sam & Max
As the episodes go on, is there any chance we'll get to see Sam and Max's neighborhood at night, with dimmer lighting and such? I think that would be cool.

Of course, it'd be extra work to make, but on the other hand it might keep some players from saying "Oh. I've seen this area in the last episode. Boring."

What do you think? :)

while this is an interesting thought I think there are other issues to resolve first

    You're being a short-sighted bigot.

    Yes, you.

It would seem Mikdog is posting in-character. In-character as what exactly we're all unsure of. He's been insulting people in a similar manner for the last couple of days.

I'm sure he finds it terribly hilarious.

And I'm sure I'd find it terribly hilarious if he was banned

    Ehem.
I wouldn't be surprised if, when locations are reused in future episodes, if they are changed around a bit, and making a "nighttime version" of the neighborhood might be a good way to do it.
I would also be amused to see Sybil's office evolve with her whims.

And people were saying there couldn't be any recurring stories throughout the episodes!

I find the "night-time version" idea very interesting, expecially if the night is bringing other kinds of characters and situations all around (as in real life), like a robber inside Bosco's, or, who knows, a drunk psychopatic begging for money. Those kinds of people that you can find on the road during the night, more than during the day. Hilarious:D

Or things you wouldn't expect to see at night. Like a kid waiting for the school bus, or a dentist that is only open after midnight.

Max with a hat would revolutionize the series

I too think it would be good to see the neighbourhood at night; the alleyway of perpetual darkness at least looks absolutely great. At risk of being a backseat driving prick, for some reason while I was playing the thought that it would be incredibly cool if Telltale alternated day and night episodes came into my head. Maybe I've just been watching too much Deadwood (which I think maybe, sort of, nearly does this, though it's hard to tell as for some reason when shown here two consecutive episodes are edited into one.)

Eerie foggy mornings would seem cool, except I don't know if the Telltale Tool could handle something like fog.

But maybe the tried and true "dark and stormy night" could be done (with the characteristic absurd spin). Maybe Sam has the ability (as a dog) to sense impending bad weather. Maybe it's just weights stuck under his hat.

    AHAHAHAH totally agree:D :D

I think it could, remember during Sam's dream? You can see some beautifully rendered smoke inside the office.. That could be easily turned into fog!
  • edited November 2006
Actually now that you mention it, their treatment of smoke is one of my very favourite things about Telltale. The Great Cow Race had similarly unique looking plumes. I think it may be the sort of thing that's actually just a clever trick and only viable in fairly specific circumstances (i.e. not a proper particle system.)

Probably! Also considering the game requires few space, and this kind of rendering often heavily increases the amount of space required (see First Person Shooters)

Since it's all 3D, maybe they could play around with the light sources you create a nighttime version of the play screen? TellTale may have to create a couple of new backgrounds (i.e. moon and stars instead of sun and smog) - But if they add it to their engine it should be easily applicable to any scene they create???

In that case, they could create dynamic day, night time screens whilst the game is running (So if you play the game at 2PM S&M's adventure would also be taking place during the day, if you play at 9PM the game world would look like it was nighttime there too)

I think Grand Theft Auto style clock would be a cool idea with different times of the day and different weather conditions I get the feeling it would be a bit ambitious at this stage in the development though.

Streetlights as light sources could create a very noir type feel which would fit in really well. Hope we see this in future episodes.

Nah, it would be impossible to adapt the story to go equally during day and night. Or at least VERY HARD. You can't expect to find the same people at any time, though it's the crazy world of S&M, so who knows!
Honestly, this kind of innovations, took from totally different game genres, scare me a lot.

Would it matter? - Playing Culture Shock during the day or night would be the same adventure (none of the puzzles seem to be based on it being morning or evening), just different lighting in place :)

Good point, I was making it harder than it is (maybe):)

It is nice, and I mean that.

Guybrush, something I've been meaning to ask you ever since our last encounter - do you, or do you not, brush your guy hair.

Please tell me this and I'll be your unfaithful friend forever.

So you want darker lighting but thats it? Turn the gamma down on your monitor.
  • edited November 2006
Or turn the monitor off! Then it'll really be dark out! :D

    Dear mikdog, I'll be honest: I DO:cool:

I think a dark setting would be awsome!

These are freelance police who deal with the scumbag narcoleptic republicans of the night. So an evening time theme would really enhance the mood of the series. Imagine sam and max prowling the streets looking for clues down the back alleys like real baddass detectives then bumping into something hilarious or whatver. IT SOUNDS PRETTY FREAKING GOOD.

If its all in the day in every episode like some cheap brightly coloured porno that would suck!

But will tell tales graphics engine be able to create a realistic night time setting?

    Or will it suck balls.

Naaa - You were just thinking it through instead of rashly posting your thoughts as they crawled into your brain like I do (personally I try and avoid thinking as much as possible, it only gets me into trouble)

To be honest, I reckon, having day/night in the game depending on the systems clock would, really, just be a novelty thing - It wouldn't actually add anything to other overall experience?
But will tell tales graphics engine be able to create a realistic night time setting?[/B]

Dunno man, I have absolutely no idea how their engine works :)

*Ahem* Well, it doesn't ''suck balls'', that's for sure. ¬¬
