The secret of monkey island is... that there is no secret.

Or maybe the real secret was in that box...

    The secret was
the monkey head was actually Hanuman's and he is actually Ganesh!

To all the Hindu fans out there, I apologize.

The secret of Monkey Island is...

...Guybrush is a small boy piloting a gigantic robotic monkey in a theme park that is trapped inside a tiny box, that is made out of solid gold.

    What? It could happen.

I maintain my super awesome theory that the secret of Monkey Island is that it is a video game. This may not seem like a secret, but I think that the original idea was to acknowledge that it was a game and have the characters be like "I'm a character in a video game?!". Well, not necessarily a video game, but something like that (maybe even some sort of... theme park? or something?), something kind of matrixy/plato's cavey.

This theory is backed up by a few things:

    • The theme park/underground element of MI2 (obviously)

    • The fact that Grossman and Gilbert were once recorded talking about the way the logistics of the "undeground" element of the secret meant that they couldn't reveal it in the first 2 games for disk space reasons (or something roughly along those lines.. something about "underground tunnels" or something). If I find the video, I'll post it. It was of a discussion between Grossman, Gilbert, Tiller and various other Lucasarts peoples after they stopped releasing adventure games.

    • In Chapter 4 of Tales, the Voodoo lady remarks that they are all "players in a much bigger game", or it might have been something to do with puppets. I can't quite remember. It was at the part where she was in jail and Guybrush was annoyed with her. Anyway, I think that the Voodoo Lady is perhaps omnipotent/enlightened and knows that they are in a game (or whatever it may be) and it's her intention to keep LeChuck and Guybrush at eachother's throats so that they can all continue to survive (i.e, so that more games can be released).

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

This actually occured to me but I dismissed it as a joke. And yet... Ron Gilbert is a humorous man after all, isn't he?
And let's not forget that the Guardian of the Crossroads (through which you can be reborn at wish :D) is Nor Treblig, a.k.a. Galeb, a.k.a. Ron Gilbert. ;)
    LOL.

Oh, yeah ... that could use a little explanation I guess ... um, Ganesha is traditionally shown with a baby elephant's head, since Shiva cut his human one off. And I was joking that the giant monkey head in the Secret of Monkey Island was actually Hanuman's, the Monkey King. So ... Ganesha and Hanuman are actually the same mythological figure, which ... would be kind of a big secret?

Huh, looking back on it, it's not really funny. Meh, oh well! Got the Ramayana on the brain, I guess.

Supporting the "video game or something" theory is also Herman Toothrot in 2, who says they're all actors on a stage.

However I'm beginning to think that the Secret is that there's no Secret and Gilbert has been pulling our legs.

I thought Shakespeare said that? And yeah, I secretly think Gilbert's plan was not anywhere near as well-defined as some people think. Basic outline, maybe?

I think I have finally figured it out guys!

The Secret of Monkey Island is...
    Ron Gilbert!

:O Why else would Ron Gilbert be so secretive about it?

Can anyone think of a secret that would be genuinely satisfying? Monkey Island is a franchise that is almost 20 years old now, but almost nothing has been revealed about it's 'true nature'. People are bound to be disappointed, regardless of what the secret is. Besides (with all due respect to Ron Gilbert), I don't think the secret is still relevant to the ongoing Monkey Island franchise.

The secret is that all the monkeys on Monkey Island are
imported from somewhere else, therefore, the name was not originally Monkey Island.

Some thoughts about the matter sorry I cannot post all the original interviews videos e.t.c:

Ron Gilbert mentioned that anachronysms in the game are not necessarily for funny purposes only.

In MI1 Guybrush mentions about the SECOND biggest monkey head he has seen. Which is the first?

    From Lechucks' Revenge
Guybrush: Where do babies come from.
LeChuck: In your case the orphanage

LeChucks' revenge shows LeChuck actually getting revenge. What happens and where and why is yet to be revealed from Ron Gilberts' mind.

Treasure of Big Whoop is a E-ticket for the theme park. What kind of theme park is actually Big Whoop? Why is the Voodoo lady and everyone else pointing Guybrush to it and WHY was a map hidden about its location. What is so interesting about it? Ron Gilbert though mentioned that Big Whoop is what its' name suggests. A Big Nothing and people should not make such a fuzz about it.

Why is there cement under the X of the treasure of Big Whoop? What is hidden underneat the Monkey Island world besides the underground tunels?

Is the Monkey Island World above another? Is it a different kind of Matrix or the 13th floor?

Is the Voodoo Lady really manipulating Guybrush and LeChuck or is it just TellTales addition to the franchise?

Of all that is revealed in Tales, what are Ron Gilberts' contributions and who can let everyone know?

These are only some thoughts to twist your mind. Keep thinking ppl although I would really love Ron Gilberts' ultimate revelation. What bothers me though is all the plot holes between MI2 and Curse which I am not sure whether they can be closed now that more games were added to the franchise.

I thought when I first played the game that Monkey Island was the secret itself... it was a secret island that you couldn't sail to normally (hence the recipe needed to get there). Or that there were underground caverns there or something.

But I don't think that's right since Nor Treblig apparently hasn't told anyone the secret... hmm.
