useless directx installation

edited December 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
I just installed the first ToMI episode and accidentally chose the default "Update DirectX" even though I'm running on a brand new win 7 64-bit install. It then proceeded to download a large number of seemingly irrelevant directx 9 updates (some from 2007) and then installed them. I'm pretty sure I don't need these, since my system was already current and already running directx 11... they're just taking up valuable space on my (small) solid-state hard disk and adding clutter. However, there seems no way to remove them -- the windows add/remove programs panel doesn't list it at all. Removing and reinstalling MI doesn't make any difference.

Would be grateful if someone could please advise as to how to uninstall these unnecessary updates.

Also, please consider changing this to no longer be the default -- it might reduce tech support queries for you but for the majority of users I suspect it's just a useless waste of space.

DirectX 11 on Windows 7 is not backwards compatible with DirectX 9, only DirectX 10, plenty of games out there that only use DirectX 9 will still check to see if it's installed and then proceed to install the required files for the game to run properly. So no, for certain games it's not a waste of space, it's a requirement to run properly! :p

Even Win7 (or any other Windows version for the matter) updated to the max could have some DX files missing. There is no harm in updating.

Also, you should manually check for updated drivers. If you wait for them to appear in WindowsUpdate (or MicrosoftUpdate) you could be a bit behind the curve (And in some cases the drivers offered are older versions than the ones installed)

What bugs me is that on my PC it installs the "One time DirectX setup" EVERY TIME I play a TTG game!

Are you launching them via the installer?

I dont know about the others, but I'm either clicking on (for example) the "Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 3 - Lair of the Leviathan" on my desktop or the "Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 3 - Lair of the Leviathan" icon in the "My Games" list in STEAM (all my TTG games are STEAM except S+M 104(?) and 201, which you guys gave out for free... several times in 201's case... *holds up fist full of 201 serial#s*)

    EDIT:
with me the TTG-direct ones dont install DX AT ALL! but STEAM does it EVERY TIME! (I'll check it with another STEAM game and see if it's a client bug)

If you're content with playing the tiny handful of DirectX-10-and-11-supporting games in existence you of course don't need DirectX 9.

If, on the other hand, you'd like to play all other Windows 3D games that are in existence you NEED TO install DirectX 9 since it doesn't ship with Windows 7 and isn't installed by Windows Update either.

    It's up to you...

(NB: you might want to read the big honking Windows 7 & You! sticky in the support forum if you don't believe me...)
