First Monkey Island and Favorite Monkey Island
Well, someone was curious about this and I'm just the sort of idiot who would take the amount of time necessary to make such a long poll, so here goes. Which Monkey Island game introduced you to the series, and which game do you consider your favorite?
Other than Curse being my first, I played the rest of the series in order. I had a hard time choosing between Curse and Tales, but Curse won. Sentimental favoritism is hard to overcome, I guess, but that's the whole point of this thread, isn't it?

For the exact chronology:
LeChucks Revenge, Curse of Monkey Island, Escape from Monkey Island, Secret of Monkey Island, Tales of Monkey Island.
haven't played the SE. maybe i'll try it if the remake of Revenge comes out.
CMI was my favorite. How can you not love a game that has both Murray and El Pollo Diablo?
Ken
I can't decide which game I like the best, though. Can I opt for "Sam and Max Hit the Road" instead?
Wait. You played EfMI and thought, "Hey, I should get the other ones!"? Lucky you.
Now, if I absolutely had to rank up the rest of the games, (I'd really rather not as I love them all... except Escape, which I would rather just be friends with) here's how I'd do it:
Secret
Curse
Tales
Revenge (controversial placing I know)

Escape
Please note that this is not intended as a slight on Revenge at all, it's a fantastic game even when you're playing it on an Amiga 600 with TWELVE DISKS. (laying the foundation for repetetive strain injuries later in life) I just happen to like Curse and Tales better, and I think a large part of that I would credit to Dominic Armato's voice acting, because for me he really brings Guybrush to life.
And another reason? Well... I was absolutely terrified of Zombie Pirate LeChuck, when the game first came out he gave me nightmares and I couldn't even watch the cutscenes he was in. (in my defence, I was 11) I only managed to complete Revenge twice when I was a kid, and that was only accomplished by playing the game with a friend and covering my eyes from the moment Guybrush falls into the tunnels under Dinky until LeChuck is zapped by the voodoo doll. I'd still play Revenge by myself, but I'd switch it off once Guybrush was dropped into the pit on Dinky. The worst part is that I'm 100% not making this up, I really was THAT scared of Zombie LeChuck. I'm over it these days of course, though I suppose that could always change if they release a special edition for Revenge...
Me too, so Escape was my first game. And... Wait, I have a favorite now?!
And I'd go with TOMI with my favourite.
It wasn't until I was eight that everything snapped together and I was able to finish Monkey Island 2. It is to this day, easily my favourite Monkey Island game!
However, with MI2, I hadn't played that one until I saw "LucasArts Archives, vol. III" in the store, which had the Monkey Island Madness CD as part of it. Sure, it's a good game, but the truth is I hated the ending. Having Guybrush end up in a stupid carnival at the end, suggesting the whole MI world was just his overactive imagination at an amusement park, with an apparently demon-possessed brother, just felt so stupid to me. If Ron Gilbert ever says that THAT is what the real Secret is, I'm going to be upset.
However, Curse was my favorite for ages after it came out, primarily because of the voice acting, Murray, and challenging mode of ship combat (among other things... there's nothing I don't like about CMI.)
I remember seeing Escape in the store during a time when Adventure games were basically dead. I remember that it was like $25 or so, and was disconcerted by the price being so low compared to other new games. I wondered at the time if EMI was shovelware. The game was new, why was the price so low? Well it wasn't TERRIBLE, but I could see at the time why Adventure games were dying or dead... since Sierra On-Line was gone, and LucasArts' two newest adventure games had terrible control schemes in a lame effort to make it feel like a console game (not to mention EMI's ending is anti-climactic.)
But you know CMI had been my favorite for, I guess 12 years now... and playing Tales just gives me that resounding feeling of exactly what it was like to play SMI for myself the first time and crack-up laughing at the insult swordfighting, or for the first time ever to hear Murray say "Alright then, ROLL! ROLL through the gates of Hell... must you take the fun out of everything?"... Playing Tales just warms my heart, so I voted for TMI as my favorite.
But my fav was definitely CMI. I first played it on a friend's PC and was like "This isn't Monkey Island, it looks nothing like those sprite-y games". But then I sort of got washed away by it and played it several times in the same year, over and over again, until I juiced it of every joke and got bored.
I still play CMI maybe like every once 3-4 years, though I have little time to play games now. I finished Tales about a week ago and have to say it was close to beating CMI near the end (Rise of the Pirate God is simply awesome), but it never did. Dunno if they would make a game decent enough to beat CMI, plus at the time I was a kid and it meant a lot to me (not like now when I'm almost a father myself lol).
I don't know, I think the better graphic/sound pushed it over the top. ('Sept Tales. I thought it was better than Tales... Maybe just 'cause it was first-er?)
Tales
Secret
escape
curse
chapter 5 of tales.
My favorite now is LeChuck's Revenge. I can play it over and over and not get tired of it. It's the perfect game. It has no flaws, no pacing issues, and all of the characters and situations and areas are memorable and beautiful. It's also one of the first games that truly scared me, so there's that as well.
My favourite is MI2, although Tales took its place for a while.
Favorite MI: Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. It retains much of the first game's innocent charm but adds in a delightful dose of darkness. Scared the hell out of me a couple times as a kid.
(Second favorite - SoMI, Third favorite - CoMI, Fourth favorite: ToMI, Hate - EfMI)
oh, and my fav is tales. not sure which episode, though, have to replay them in order.
