Tarot Cards in the TTG Store Question

edited March 2010 in Tales of Monkey Island
I don't know how or why I aquired this, but I've been fasinated by tarot cards of all designs. I know the store description says that the ones you can buy from TTG as part of the TMI merch feature all the cards from the game, but I'm curious about one fact that I can't seem to find.

Is it a full deck of 78 cards?

Did the description of the deck changed? I clearly remember reading it had 18 cards (which prompted my post in the Tarot Cards as merchandise concerning if it would include all seen in the gam), but can't find it now.

To answer your question, no, it is not a full deck. It was mentioned in one of the preorder threads.

Yeah, the store description didn't have a card count, so I didn't know how thick the deck was.

18 cards is still a good number of cards, especially given the art on the sample shots.

The description for the product says:

'includes all the cards seen in the game, plus new ones!'

I believe there were 21 cards seen in the game, which means the number of cards in the deck will be greater than 21. Plus the exclusive extra included if you purchase the Deluxe Edition DVD.

    So, some kick math:

    - Voodoo Card Set : 18 cards
    - Deluxe Edition : 1 Exclusive Card
    - Total : 19 Cards

    - Cards seen in the game: 21
    - "Combined" Cards: (2) (formed by combining two cards)
    - Real Total: 19 Cards

So all cards were seen, I do wonder which one is the left out of the tarot deck (The Sixth Sense?).

The LeChuck/Elaine "Lothario" and the Guybrush/Morgan "Shivers" aren't actual separate cards. I suppose you could make them using an extra tarot deck (unless you want to rip your "Lovers" card in half) and some glue, though.

Which is why I substracted them. And wasn't this in the other thread?

Yes, it was. I was quoting you from the other thread because I liked your explanation.

Hello Zeek. You also have an avatar from Gaia. (That means we are the coolest.)

The deck will actually have 21 cards, which includes some new ones, and the Deluxe edition has its own special card! Had to clarify this today.

So you do have the same number of cards as the Major Arcana (22 trump cards) once you add the bonus card. That was holding off my purchase. I don't suppose you know of any intended equivalents between your tarot cards and the "proper" versions (like The Fool, The Magician, Justice, Death, etc.)?

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Major Arcana (Trumps Major, Major Trumps) of occult or divinatory tarot consists of twenty two cards. The name Major Arcana was first used by Paul Christian. Each Major Arcanum depicts a scene, mostly featuring a person or several people, with many symbolic elements. In many decks, each has a number (usually in Roman numerals) and a name, though not all decks have both, and some have only a picture. The earliest decks bore unnamed and unnumbered pictures on the Majors (probably because a great many of the people using them at the time were illiterate), and the order of cards was not standardized. Nevertheless, one of the most common sets of names and numbers is as follows:

    0 or 22 The Fool
1 The Magician / The Juggler
2 The High Priestess / The Popess
    3 The Empress
    4 The Emperor
5 The Hierophant / The Pope
    6 The Lovers
    7 The Chariot
    8 or 11 Justice
    9 The Hermit
    10 Wheel of Fortune
    11 or 8 Strength / Fortitude
12 The Hanged Man / The Traitor
    13 Death
    14 Temperance
    15 The Devil
    16 The Tower / Fire
    17 The Star
    18 The Moon
    19 The Sun
    20 Judgment / The Angel
    21 The World

The images on the Major Arcana are often very heavy with symbolism, with far more to the illustration than a mere depiction of the card title. The Major Arcana are usually regarded as relating to matters of higher purpose or deep significance, as opposed to the Minor Arcana which relate to the everyday world and matters of immediate significance.

Yep, that's the Major Arcana, SilverWolfPet. What I'm curious about is if the 22 ToMI Tarot cards are all intended to be rough equivalents to those trumps.

Nope, they were intended to suit the story. Again, they are a VOODOO deck, not a tarot deck.

Voodoo, tarot, charms, potions, hoodoo, things nobody's tried...

Keith David rules. And Doctor Facilier is an evil, evil man.

As to the Voodoo deck, I figured as much; I just figured it couldn't hurt to ask. Mind you, I might be able to make a fair comparison once I get a look at them.

Hmmm...maybe for ToMI 2, you can release an appropriately monkey-esque Minor Arcana with the same backing as the set this time? After all, it's pretty much just a standard deck of cards with one extra "face" card per suit.

Hell, I just like the ART on Tarot cards, but it sounds like you know how to actually USE them... Kind of cool, in a creepy kind of way.
  • edited March 2010
Creepy but useful. Brainiac, even if the cards do not resemble the original Major Arcana, one could still use them if one would attach various personal interpretations for the symbolic images. After all, we are doing that with the Major Arcana anyway. Nobody sais that they have to be exactly the same. Depends on the "reader".

Does any one have any screen captures of all the cards in the game?

I just watched the YouTube walkthrus, and you eventually see them all by the time the Chapter 5 intro plays.

Have to say, The Sixth Sense card reminds me of the poster for Momento...

I also regret not buying the game as it came out. It looks like it was a true labor of love, and HOLY CRAP what an epic story! Especially for someone that has never played a Monkey Island game!

    <uproarious laughter>

Sorry, sorry. No, I'm in no way, shape, or form a practitioner of tarot divination; at my core, I am a scientist. I'm just familiar with the contents of the deck itself mostly due to my fascination with the mythological. In addition, the tarot deck has actually been used in both actual and fictional card games (it's what the sabacc deck in Star Wars is based from). I've also played the classic computer game "The Fool's Errand" which is based around the tarot deck.

Heh; true. Tarot divination is all about interpretation. However, I'd imagine Majus would always get Guybrush-centric cards in any predictions made for him. As for you, SWP, I'm not so sure...probably just more monkeys to psychoanalyze?

Oooh, I've just had a vision of Drs. Kauff von Diefendorf and Gustav von Schneider using tarot divination with the voodoo cards in a new "Ask a Monkeyologist." Now that's creepy.

Hmmm... idea noted and taken as my own. Thank you.

(kidding, but nice idea, maybe we'll use it ;))

Wow! SWP might rip me off! I'm honored! :p

Seriously, you're welcome to the idea. I'm sure you and Majus could make something quite hilarious.

A delayed double post to note something specific:

Believe it or not, there IS a Voodoo Tarot deck. If it weren't for the fact that the standard ToMI card set has 21 instead of 22, I'd guess the bonus card was the equivalent to the Voodoo Tarot's Wild Card, Les Barons.

So, just out of curiosity... Does anyone else think that these cards may be used in actual readings?

Brainiac, I may have some cool news for you, but it would just spoil the fun. Keep your eyes out for the soon-to-be-made Monkeyologist Episodes. ;)

I await them with bated breath, SWP. Now I just need Telltale to provide an answer to the ToMI soundtrack question to make me quite happy (preferably today as I'm heading to Boston for PAX East as of tomorrow).

If so, I'm sure something will come up on MIWiki as a result of it.

You can not actually tell the future with Terot Cards or Voodoo cards... but those folded paper fortune telling things that school girls use all around the world are totally legit.
