Why was the last episode late?

I want to point out this is NOT a whining thread.. Just a curiousness thread..

What held up the last episode of ToMI? Was it to work on the see through ribs effect of Guybrush.... was it because a ninja attack? Just wondering.

What ever it was the game ended up great...

    It was late?
    ...
I didn't realise that, are you sure?
  • edited April 2010
Yeah it was, by a fortnight or so I think. Hardly the end of the world though, but I was always curious much like Mr. Mile

Wait, you're saying they set a date, then moved it two weeks later?

Nope, it was classified as 'late' because it didn't come out in November, but really, we actually waited less than the amount of time it took for episode 2 to come out.

I figured that Thanksgiving took away 3 or 4 days' worth of crunch-time productivity.

I don't figure Telltale to be evil slave-drivers like Electronic Arts. I think I read an interview somewhere that the Telltale Powers That Be try to let their staff do things like sleep and eat regularly.

Oh, I see. Well in that case it's more that all episodes were "late" because there was more than exactly 30/31 days between them. And that pushed the last one into another month as a result.

I don't think it's that big a deal, personally. But Irishmile, that's what I'd answer your question. It's not the last one that was late. It's just that the episodes took longer than exactly a month to make.

I'd be curious about exact number of days between each episode, actually. Did anyone keep all the release dates?

    Wikipedia to the rescue:
    • Launch of the Screaming Narwhal: July 7, 2009
    • The Siege of Spinner Cay: August 20, 2009
    • Lair of the Leviathan: September 29, 2009
    • The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood: October 30, 2009
    • Rise of the Pirate God: December 8, 2009

Okay, so by my calculations (and please correct me since math isn't my strong suit) that would make it...

Between ep 01 and ep 02: 44 days
Between ep 02 and ep 03: 40 days
Between ep 03 and ep 04: 31 days
Between ep 04 and ep 05: 39 days

Which makes the last episode the second fastest to be released (if I'm correct).

Episodic is hard. Even with the right tools and extremely talented people, if the process is not seamless, you'll run into some snags and it will delay you. It's a very linear but interconnected process, and with such a big and beautiful game as ToMI was, we kept just barely on schedule the whole time.
Our schedule was quite hectic and, with few exceptions, we have been doing quite well to learn from our mistakes and properly prepare. The Devil's Playhouse in particular has a much more regimented schedule because of the platforms it's on and the preparedness we need to have in addressing those platforms. It's a blessing, but it isn't lacking its own stress.

tl;dr: Refer to first sentence: Episodic is hard.

You are correct, according to the date calculator website I frequently use.

I'm 99% sure this is why Episode 305 of Sam & Max doesn't have a release month listed, in case it slips from August to September like RotPG's release ended up in December instead of November.

Was the finale of TMI ever officially slated for November to the general public? If not, "late" isn't really accurate.

Well that sounds much simpler than counting my knuckles!
    Thanks for the link!

every TTG season they say a game every month... November technically didn't have one hence being late... despite the actual time between...

again im not whining or upset I was just interested to know what snagged them up... because I find that sort of thing interesting.... I am glad they took the time to make the game right instead of release an unfinished episode just so they could make a silly deadline.

Also... Nikasaur you do not have to protect Yare you can tell us if he held up the game trying to get the powers that be to give him a desk closer to the vending machines.

He was actually lobbying to get a desk made from vending machines, I believe.

When I saw this thread, I was almost certain that it was about the delayed launch on December 8th. If you recall, the Telltale employees were scrambling to try and get last minute touches done, and the game didn't get out until around 7 PM PST. That's the delay I wonder about. What specific last minute changes held up the game's release that day?

Just like Irishmile, not complaining, just curious.

I'm glad, we're not dealing with Duke Nukem Forever here. :D

    Yeah, it was.

Still, it was only 2 weeks. It wasn't really much of a delay.

Not only did the last episode come out in December, which made it look noticeably late, but I'm pretty sure the cliffhanger from chapter 4 made some of us a little impatient and made the wait feel even longer!

    ... it's a theory.

As for what GuruGuru214 said, I'm curious about that too. My memories of that night are: threads about people breaking their F5 key, Majus' "just a minute" animation and someone from Telltale saying something about "just doing some last minute adjustments that will make the game much better".

Now that the game's been released, I wonder what it was they were working on...?

No, he was just depressed because I wasn't stalking him yet, and he could feel that something was missing from his life.
