When will you play the commentary mode?

I've played MI2 so many times that I've seen just about everything and read about every line there is in the game. Of course, I'm interested in hearing the new music, see the new graphics and hear the voicovers. But I just can't help feel very intrigued about the commentary mode. So, I may be playing the commentary mode first of all.

I'll definately want to see all the new stuff before I delve into the history. Otherwise I know I'd just be straining to hear the new voices behind them talking and I'd miss things that I know I'd love to hear. :D

It's been a while since I played MI2, so I'm gonna play the first time just normally, with the improved graphics, and switching to the old ones every now and then, just to compare.
Then the second time I'll use commentary mode, since that sounds very interesting.

Minor nitpick: It should be "I could'nt care less" ;)

I have planned playing it three times soon after it comes out:
1: First, a normal playthrough of the thing.
    2: Playthrough with commentary.
3: Fast playthrough for the Great Monkey Island Race.

I know, it was intentional. ;)

    Also, "couldn't", not "could'nt". :D

D'oh, and I stared at it for a while too, making sure I typed it right. Oh well, another failpoint earned :)

I chose my second playthrough, but honestly I can't decide....we'll see, I guess.

After hearing Derrick explain a bit about the commentary mode, I'm not sure I can resist checking it out on my first playthrough :)

I expect that I'll listen the very first commentary that comes up. But my plan is to play through once without the commentary and then go through again with the commentary.

    1st playthrough.
I play the Special Editions just out of curiosity, not that i care much about new graphics or voices. But i do care about the commentaries and since im gonna play it just once, that will be the time.

I wonder if the commentary will be available in classic mode.

    Yes, they said it will.

I plan on playing through without and with the commentary (that is, my first and second playthroughs respectively) both in the same day.
  • edited May 2010
I've played the game through enough that I think I'm okay with just playing the commentary the first time through.
  • edited May 2010
From what I've gathered, the commentary won't just haphazardly start playing when you wander into a scene, it'll come up with a prompt that says "Play commentary (Press __ button)", so you wouldn't have to interrupt anything to be able to hear it.

So you should be able to play the game, hear all the new voices and music and whatnot, AND listen to all the commentary, if it pleases you.
  • edited May 2010
Yeah you have to enable it from the menu and then actually press the commentary button when it prompts you to do so.

Never played MI2 before, so it will not be the first play through, and maybe not even the 2'nd but I am not really sure yet. So my vote was option 3.

    Second playthrough.

I was wondering, they should add a spoof commentary by the characters, as if they were the actors in a movie.

I wouldn't like that. It makes the game a lot more artificial, if you know what I mean. I don't want to see the characters as actors, I want to think of them as actual people really going through the actions of the game.

It's the same with the 'blooper' reels included as a bonus on some Pixar DVDs. It completely destroys any suspension of disbelief.

I see what you mean. Yeah, that blooper reel on "The Incredibles" was so not funny. But I was only making a comparison. I wouldn't want the story in the game to be like a movie, with the characters as actors, same as you; instead it would be a "real life" story, something they actually experienced and then commented on afterwards, like an audio version of the memoirs of Guybrush Threepwood, kinda documentary style, with insights on what was going through his head when it all happened, what he secretly thinks of the other people he encountered, etc.

At least to me that would be more believable than a developers' commentary track - that's what I call artificial.

And in the end, I'm only imagining. It's not like it's ever going to be up for debate.

Actually this sounds kind of cool. I'd buy it.

If you say it like that, then it does sound interesting :)
Or make "The Memoirs of Guybrush Threepwood: The Monkey Island Years" a real book, that'd be interesting too. Though that could quickly turn into a rehash of the games, only boring.

Or make a new game, that tells the story how Guybrush tells others. Over exaggerated and over the top.

Each event would have to closely tie to the originals, so that it's obvious how Guybrush mis-remembers it. It would have to be fairly short, because seeing Guybrush beat up LeChuck would get old.

It would be interesting at least.

That has already been brought up.

Or the implication could be "I could care less" and that is what they will do... start caring even less.

    Kind of like.

    question "are you hungry?"

    answer "I could eat"

Technically, I'm right, 'cause I care even less about what you're saying right now.

    ;)

Definitely first(and possibly only) time through. The way it is set up is unobtrusive AND I've already played through the game before and know it pretty well.
  • edited May 2010
Definately second playthrough. My most recent playthrough of MI2 was around a year ago so I know the game pretty well by now but I still look forward to having it in hd on my tv and all that jazz, new looking and stuff...
Then I'll listen to the commentaries, and do things a little differently so I can catch anything I missed on first run.
  • edited May 2010
I think I'll put the commentary mode on the first time. I have the whole game memorized already, I could recite it in my sleep.

  • Second playthough. I've only just beaten MI2, but wanna see and hear the shiny before commentary. :D

I don't know if I'll ever play SE versions of MI because I don't want to DL a game. I like owning everything I have, if it's not on a CD then forget it!

Well, TTGs MI wasn't on CDs at first but I just have to order my DVD...

I'm still hoping that after MI2:SE is out that Lucasarts will release a DVD version with both on it.
