I call shenanigans on the "SECRET"

Thats right.... what I think is that the "Secret" was and always was intended to be that the giant monkey head (second biggest) opens and leads to a labyrinth to which you can navigate (if you can get ahead in navigation) your way to hell...

I also think that LeChuck found this probably with the aid of the locals... or died, ended up in hell,.... made a deal with the Devil, and or escaped on his own finding his way through the underworld, and out of the monkey head.... as a ghost.

THAT is what I believe the secret is... and it WAS pretty much revealed in the very first game.... I just think people didn't quite get that, that was the secret and Ron either thought it was too embarrassing that people didn't understand that was supposed to be the secret or he just figured it was more fun to let people think there was indeed a different secret and didn't correct people..

So what are your thoughts? shenanigans? Or there is still a secret that we have not been shown?

Either way I am emailing Myth busters to get on this myth..

    Sounds plausible to me.

so then, what do you believe the "escape" of monkey island is? Wait, FROM? No wonder I never understood that game!

I think at that point they were just throwing nouns in front of the title even if it didn't have anything to do with Monkey Island.

Yeah, I'll come along with you on this.

In fact I always thought that Monkey Island was the secret in and of itself, because of its almost mythical status and the near-impossibility of getting there. Saying "The Secret of Monkey Island" is like saying "The secret of Steve's penchant for dressing up as a sexy policewoman and pulling over cars on the freeway" - the latter part of the sentence IS the secret.

If there actually is some big secret, there is absolutely no way it will ever live up to fans' expectations... I know that Gilbert has said that there is a real secret that is yet to be revealed, but like you said, I think that's more likely to be something he conjured up after the first game. Of course, I'm still interested to know what that is though. :)

I think I have been pulled over by steve....... the strip search will haunt me til the end of my days.

I wouldn't be suprised if there is no 'secret' hidden away somewhere.
But I like your way of thinking, Irishmile.

(And you too puzzlebox, especially the part about Steve.)

When I first played Secret, that's exactly what I thought. The secret is that the monkey head is really a gateway to hell. Works for me. (certainly makes a lot more sense/is less stupid than it being a giant monkey robot)

And yes, I do think that a lot of the fuss about the 'real' secret is just handwaving, like it's been seized on as a way to keep fans interested in the series. Given how many people seem to want to know the 'real' secret, it works!

I don't think the secret is the monkey head since the natives and Herman already knew about it. It's not the monkey robot from Escape because Escape was nothing but an elaborate dream sequence/ hallucination. (I'll elaborate on that if need be but I'm not going to bore uninterested people with the details)
In LR when Guybrush asks what the Secret is you realize they never really pointed something out and said "That's the big secret right there!"
I think it's just better as a running joke. So, what IS the Secret of Monkey Island? If they told you it wouldn't be a Secret. :P

See that is where you "may" be wrong... Like everything in Monkey Island the the "secret" would probably be not that much of a secret. Much like the three trials.

Master the art of treaure hunting
The treasure was a T-Shirt everyone knew about

Master the art of the sword
the sword master was someone everyone seems to have beaten because you have to, to become a pirate.... and they are all pirates so she has to have been beaten by just about everyone.

    Master the art of thievery
This was just a knick-knack that the governor gave willingly

    Big Whoop
    was just that

for symmetry the secret is probably a well known thing to just about everyone in the Monkey Island world but Guybrush.. The natives and Herman probably knew the secret was the Monkey Head but the real question is do people in that world know the extent of the secret.

The T-Shirt was all that was left of the treasure after greedy pirates took the rest of it (Read the sign next to the X)

I got nothing here. Most pirates on the island respect the Swordmaster ("You're good enough to fight the swordmaster!") It may just be that they have to defeat a respectable swordsman and Guybrush decided to take on the Swordmaster. Maybe the other pirates fought Captain Smirk. Idk I'm wildly guess on this one.

It was the hot thing to steal, the Important Looking Pirates ask Guybrush to steal that specific thing. (Ask them about Mastering the Art of Thievery) The Governor gave it to Guybrush because she fancied him and didn't like it much anyway.

yeah thats what i thought, it was my very episodic game, and thought each episode would be a new adventure tale for guybrush

but back on the secret topic, i dunno if any of you guys saw that if you go inside the monkeys head, in the background, you actually see a big bone spine and big rib cage, ignoring the whole monkey head being a machine..that could possible had something to do with the secret, a big dead monkey

actually this has just come to my attention when writing this, you know how planet of the apes, (the orignal) when the main guy he thinks hes back on earth when he sees that the statue of liberty is on the island, but realised that that he was always there and the planet was actually ruled by apes, or something like that, and that was the secret maybe monkey island was taking the mickey out of that...i dunno lol

I'm hoping the use of the plural 'Tales' is to let us know there will be more than one.

I always assumed there was a huge pile of shirts and there just happened to be only one left, or something. It's been a while, but I never had the impression that there was any treasure other than shirts, and each pirate took one.

I thought the secret was pretty much revealed in the first one too. All the t-shirts and the grog machine just kinda went over my head as anything else but a gag!

I think a lot of people just want an explanation to the ending of Monkey 2. Over the years that just kind of became 'the secret'.

Loving the Lost/Planet of the Apes pics btw :)
