Get both on Steam. The SteamVersion of ME2 can be registered on Origin (origin-copies cannot be registered on Steam though)
ME1 cannot really be registered on Origin though if you bought it on Steam.

But can the saves be used like that? I know your decisions in ME1 can effect stuff in ME2.

They use the same save system. As long as both are from the PC version you can use one Shepard throughout ME 1 to 3. In ME2 you can change everything about the character at the start but the decisions are still kept.
You need to run the ME2 launcher which has the import save option. Both versions save the files to the same place.
I don't think that one game could destroy their reputation when they have lots of good games in their catalog... but it's probably damaged by this. And who knows, maybe they'll offer a "varied ending" patch or something.
I just want an ending where the Reapers kill everyone. Like, if you don't do any side quests and act like a dick to all the aliens you're trying to get to ally with you. And a beginning where you play through the whole game as Joker (assuming everyone died in the suicide mission from ME2).
I've just seen the Shepard Indoctrination Theory, which has the potential of making the ending better, but still, it's a shitty ending by Mass Effect standards, as it's still just one ending.
EDIT: In other words, I'm beginning to work on MUGEN stuff again. Don't expect any new stages from me anytime soon though.

Honestly, I don't think the game needs a good ending. I think it just needs a much worse alternative so you feel like you accomplished something. And then a Fallout-style montage where you find out what happened to all your buddies.
The overreaction to the game is ridiculous. As if the game is somehow bad because people dont like the ending.
...but a movie can be? This is an interesting debate. If you judge a movie as a whole, why can't you judge a game? I've played games that I've loved and had bad endings... but I've also played games where the ending almost ruins the whole experience for me. Does it depend on how engrossing a game becomes? Some games are just fun and others have a more captivating story.

I should probably aso state tht I've fallen further into the "games are games" camp as opposed to the games are art or games are movies category. Ths I the how a game is judged should rey most heavily on its mechanics and ability to pass time and entertain. This is what I thi currently.
I would like some feedback. What would you think if I transitioned to anew background colorist? This one recently applied. http://blackburnart.carbonmade.com/

That's really good. That one has the big box of Crayolas. Kidding aside, I think their style look good.

I still like story, I like getting drawn into it. I also enjoy games that are just sheer joy to play. I'm pretty in between the two views.
edit: I feel a game can be art, but it doesn't have to be. If a game does, in fact, cross that line of "fun" into "art", in my eyes, it then has the ability to disappoint me in the same way a movie can.

I dunno. I'd say that the reaction of the ending of ME3 is more based on the fact that a specific mechanic (the ability to influence the story by actions in the game) was not really applied to the ending. There's apparently practically no difference between rushing through the game/making horrible decisions, and taking one's time with the game to get every last advantage before the end.
I think that's why people felt cheated by it. It's basically communism, the game.
The overreaction to the game is ridiculous. As if the game is somehow bad because people dont like the ending.
No, it's a shitty ending because it is ONE ending. I mean, in the context of the theory, it might have been one of the good endings, were it not that it was the ONLY ending. That, and if there were to be multiple paths eventually, they would come in the form of DLC. Which is stupid, because that Prince of Persia with the ending as DLC was stupid because of that.
In other words, it's a stupid cop-out to force people to buy the DLC. If the theory is correct then, yes, Earth is boned, and in the DLC people would see the aftermath of the battle on Earth. But it's DLC stuff.
I mean, not that I'm against DLC, but this is just milking the cow. When I buy a game, I expect to have the complete game. Any DLC I buy afterwards is only for extras, like extra missions, something that might add to the lore, but which isn't essential to the progression of the storyline. Which is also why that other DLC for Mass Effect 2 was fairly stupid. Why should people pay extra just to see the bridging story between ME2 and ME3?
And it's not like this DLC wasn't essential to the story. In fact, from what I've read the entire beginning of ME3 is based on that very DLC.
It's like, making a Matrix trilogy, but having some essential information be put on some stupid anime compilation and / or video game tie-in. Oh wait.
But I would argue that don't make the game, taken in its entirety, bad. It's like giving one star to something because you're displeased with a single element.

Giving it 1/10 or less is of course overreacting. I didn't give The Whispered World a score that low because it had, let's face it, a similar ending. But is definitely ruined the whole game for me to a point that I don't want to play it again and feel my time with it was a complete waste.

Hah. Would you argue these games would be better if the illusion of choice was removed?

Maybe for TWW that would work. That's a 10 hour game with a linear plot, but they could have hinted towards this end a little more. They get you really invested in this story and then they go: fuck this shit let's stop it at the climax.
Mass Effect is about choice. It is the whole time. Until the end of these games. And even then there were no plot holes in the endings for ME1 and 2 and you had to make a decision that would effect the games after that in a certain way.
The ending for ME3 is different. There are plot holes all over. It feels stapled on the game so they can meet the deadline for the release. And the worst: we were promised something completely different. They promised the players several vastly different endings depending on the decisions you made in the games and what we got are 9 cut scenes that are the same except for a few frames and the colour.
AngryJoe made a video with the top 10 reasons he thinks the ending sucks. He also included the promises from Bioware in the first minute. It's in the ME3 thread in general chat. Watch that please.
Ended up pitching exactly what the dragons offered.
Lost money..
(though that was due to me taking out a loan. I would have paid it back instantly in real life though, since I didn't make a deal. So I would have ended up with pretty much what I started with! XD)

Would this perchance have anything to do with a night of drunken revelry?

I was told I was refluxing. I thought I was having a heart attack. Is alcohol related to acid reflux? Yes.
