About the beginning of CMI

First, the reason I've not been visiting, or at least writing on this forum for the last few weeks is because... I just got a heart transplant. As my father put it, 32 years of hell is finally put to an end (I must've been horrible as a kid :D). I feel great, and will now return occasionally to the forums, although I've no chance of gaming since my laptop is... well... basically ancient by today's standard. Only useful for surfing the internet and writing documents. Just in case anyone cares. ;)

Now, to the topic; I loved CMI for what it was. But I can't see the reason why they tried so much to hide the fact that it was a sequel to Monkey Island 2. Only a few things here and there at the end, and a phrase at the beginning hinted at past happenings. I think it should've started with Guybrush as a child, (although I hated his child design) from the get go, and then have him fight child LeChuck (or Chucky if you will) to lose the curse and escape Big Whoop. LeChuck wouldn't be completely defeated, but you know what happens next.

I would've totally loved to play the escape. And I don't think there were enough years between MI2 and CMI to have a reason not to make it start where it ended - which in my idea is just as good a start as the Wally the Pirate part, which wouldn't even have to be erased from the game. Only thing that needs a change is the ending - visiting the theme park twice as a child is not really necessary, imo. Especially since Guybrush must've fallen under the exact same curse. He usually don't fall for the same trickery twice... does he?

What's your opinion?

I really liked the way they opened Curse. The ending of MI2 was so strange for anyone else to apprehend except Ron Gilbert and his team and since they were not consulted I find it wise to live a blank spot and open the CMI with that kind of approach which was great by the way. Even if what they came up with the ending of MI2 could be a close approach to what Ron Gilbert and his team had in mind, still we will never know until the original team makes an approach which I see it very closely seeing the get together for MI2 special edition. A lot of things are hinting to an imminent revelation of the secret. Craig Derrick mentioned in an interview that fans finally deserve to find out the secret, although in another he said he did not wish to reveal it in MI2 SE so probably we will be seeing a new MI in a while. We all know how secret Ron Gilbert is so I would not be supprised if the game is already in pre construction stage! Why did he leave his own company in the first place? What cause Rodriguez reparture of Lucasarts? But to keep to the topic, I liked the way they tried to avoid the previous games in CMI and revamped in a great approach although I did not like the way LeChuck was presented as a bit idiotic because that he is not.

Ah, but that's the thing. They didn't leave a blank spot at all, they just moved it to the end of the game instead, and made it a reprise visit. When LeChuck captured Elaine and Guybrush, the ending could've been so much different and the game would feel less detached to the original game. It only came out four years later, I believe, and that's no reason to not continue the story. Why did they even have to include a revisit to the park, instead of just putting it in the beginning where it should've been in the first place? That's where it belonged in the story, and regardless of what they would've done, I can't think of a reason why it would be any worse than it is now. So I think it would be for the better if the story actually started where MI2 left off, since they more or less continued where MI2 left off anyway at the end of the game, which felt more like fan service than for the good of the game. So I think they should just have done the fan service in the beginning, and then make a new story with a new ending. Maybe even the whole carnival of the damned thingy should've been done with already in the first chapter of the game.

I dissagree. I liked the way they tried to handled the storyline. If Ron Gilberts MI3a or whatever you wanna call it never gets made the series have a sense of continuity and it was a valid argument of what the ending of MI2 meant although I am not saying that what is shown in Curse is actually what happened in MI2 ending! Even Ron Gilbert said that they came pretty close to what the ending was about but not fully.

I absolutely love the opening for Curse Of Monkey Island. I was (and am) in love with all the intro, all the sequences and the cinematic timing of the whole thing. Is just amazing (Pirates Of The Caribbean NEEDS to say THANKS in public to that game, and specifically to that opening HA!!).

I know that nowadays there's a lot of technology and stuff, and there are a lot of impressive cinematig games and stff, but to me, IMO, this opening will be forever the best opening on the history of games.

In terms of connection of both LCR and CMI... they did what the best they could to connect both games.
