Monkey Island prequel..

Would you play one? It could have Guybrush when he decides to be a pirate... Maybe he sees a random act of piracy and thinks "hey that's what I wanna be"

the game could be all about him getting to Melee Island... and it could end with a ghost ship attacking his ship obscured by fog and he jumps ship and swims to shore.... sees the fire on top of the hill and goes for it.

To include LeChuck in the prequel we could play as him for the very first time every other chapter and see what happened to him to make him a ghost...

I am telling you it could totally work.

I think a prequel would be more interesting if the player isn't Guybrush. LeChuck or Elaine would both work better in my opinion.

See I imagine Guybrush's adventure actually getting to Melee Island as every bit as exciting as the rest of his story.....

I don't know, on the one hand, it might very well be (there are lots of adventure games with non-pirates in them), on the other hand I like how he just popped in there with no context or background, saying "I'm Guybrush Threepwood and I want to be a pirate".

You have a valid point and it is a famous opening.... but my curiosity about what made him decide to become a pirate is pretty strong.

I imagine him on a ship already that was over taken by pirates and left floating in the wreckage forced to swim to Melee.... Heck maybe even LeChuck before he became a ghost.

I agree with Avistew on liking how Guybrush just randomly appeared, but it would be awesome to know somewhat of his background. So, I'd be in to a prequel. :)
  • edited June 2010
I think Guybrush doesn't have a backstory. He just materialized on top of Melee Island and decided that he wants to be a pirate. But if I'm wrong, it should certainly turn out to be a nice game.
Or... would this content have been treated in the "other" MI3??
  • edited June 2010
Why does there have to be some external influence in his decision to become a pirate? Why can't he just have always wanted to be one? I've always thought that it was just his dream to be a pirate, and that's all I've ever needed. I think the story would lose some of its magic if it turned out that some external factor influenced Guybrush in this regard.

People can have dreams without having a reason to have them. In a way, I think it makes life more interesting when not every single thing has a reason behind it.

So, no, I don't think I'd play a prequel to Monkey Island. Or, I probably would, but I'm not sure I'd enjoy it.

Well, at least MI4 showed him being flushed ashore at Mélêe in a flashback....

Yes, I think I might actually like to play a prequel like this. It would be quite interesting; I'd really like to know what happened in the early parts of the character's lives. It'd be great for expanding the canon and the characters themselves.

    Monkey Island: Origins

    Just think of the possibilities.
  • edited June 2010
Yeah I like that start. Plus, for me Paco Vink's comic did the start of the Monkey Island story quite well, too.

I prefer the idea of following a background character, though maybe that would be sort of selling out?
  • edited June 2010
I rather have a sequel with a time vortex in the sea or something, or simply have parts of the game play taking place in his past.
  • edited June 2010
I wouldn't want a prequal telling us Guybrush's background. I like the way it started and the mystery there is.

However, any game released in the MI series, I would feel obliged to play!:)

Something could be done with the "It's a Wonderful Life" type of story. An alternate reality, maybe...
  • edited June 2010
A world where Guybrush Threepwood became a mighty flooring inspector!
  • edited June 2010
I'd pay for some prequel stand-alone episodes that expand on the backstory, while being very entertaining. An episode about Herman, an episode about Marley, an episode about LeChuck. The Monkey island games have a really rich backstory.

what if guybrush didn't decide to become a pirate though?
Without some mention of backstory ,maybe him being a fine leather jacket sales man, the whole story has o concept even though I would prefer the whole mention in passing or a plot twist of he was never meant to end up on mele island.

And I liked how rayman just showed up saying "ill save the world" and nothing else, but we are getting an origins on that(although it looks cool)

    I just had an epiphany!

Let's see, MI1 starts with him out of nowhere, wanting to be a pirate. MI2 ends with him being a kid in a park. His life is in a loop! MI3a is actually the story of how Guybrush ended up wanting to be a pirate, how Chucky got evil and became LeChuck and so on. And Big Whoop, what was that? Just a theme park, as the ending suggested... hence the name. The name wasn't important. The CURSE that Elaine mentions wasn't Big Whoop at all. Guybrush is stuck in an endless loop, that's the curse, and LeChuck cast it... and with this in mind, all the references to modern society is due to a weakness in the curse.

    naaaah

what if guybrush didn't decide to become a pirate though?

    Ooh, wait, I got this!
THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND - ELAINE EDITION

The Secret of Monkey Island. LeChuck, disguised as Shinetop, has no distractions from his plan, LeChuck kidnaps Elaine, Elaine escapes of her own accord, as in the game, the monkeys disintegrate LeChuck once he leaned in to kiss the "bride". Elaine retrieves LeChuck's beard, which is later stolen by Largo, who revives LeChuck as a zombie, who then kills Largo after having no reason to ignore the "When are we gonna resurrect the old bloated fool?" line.

Elaine seeks the help of the Voodoo Lady of Melee Island and flees the Island in search of the ultimate way to escape LeChuck, through Big Whoop, positioning her Lookout in charge of the island in her absence. Elaine shows her importance to Stan with the Gubernatorial seal at the shipyard, hires a ship and scours the Tri-Island area looking for the map pieces, which she later retrieves, and one of which she already had in her posession. Once all pieces were collected, she visits Scabb Island in the search for a Cartographer, who pieces the map together, since he has no "evil dead guys" looking for him, and Elaine travels to Dinky Island in search for Big Whoop, which she later finds after confronting and escaping LeChuck in the tunnels by creating a Voodoo doll. Elaine pulls the leg off of LeChuck, lets him die and Elaine finds Big Whoop, turning her into a child, and meeting up with Captain Marley and his Big Whoop crew.

Elaine confronts Largo in Big Whoop, stealing Elaine's Gubernatorial Seal, leaving Elaine to die in the land of the undead, returning to the real world and becoming the ruler of the Tri Island Area!

Not much different with or without Guybrush, is it?
    :p

But after reading StarEye's post...that could be the secret Ron was planning to reveal in MI3! That's actually a really cool idea of it being a time loop, and remember Herman's line in Monkey Island 2 when you meet him on the beach? That his whole life has been a prequel to meeting him here? Maybe Guybrush met Herman in his child-years, and told Herman he'd be meeting him on Dinky Island...
    Hmm...

I hope we do get to see Monkey Island 3 eventually...

A prequel wouldn't work, and it would ruin a lot of it.

Thing is, we don't know where Guybrush came from. And that's good. We know he ended up on Melee some how and wanted to be a pirate. We also assume he's a kid in an amusement park.

So no. No prequel. An official Monkey Island 3, though...

    @ monkey movies why would
elaine be on the island with largo when she is not governer of that island?
if you're doing a hypothetical situation you must have ALL plot hole filled.

I wouldnt mind a prequel, but they have to have a good strong story in order for it to be good. its like Wolverine Origin (Not the movie, the graphic novel) alot of people had doubts cause nobody knew about Logans past and perfered it to be a mystery, but the graphic novel proved to be sucessful due to how the story was, unlike the film version which did a big poo on it :P

So a Monkey Island Prequel yeah

One of the main reasons that I'd like to see a prequel would be to have the 'it all takes place in a theme park' theory killed off and buried.
  • edited June 2010
Having each episode dedicated to what a different character was doing just before the first game started could be pretty interesting.... Some of the episodes would be intertwined like Elaine's, LeChuck's, and the Voodoo Ladie's. Plus it would be interesting working directly against yourself in the different episodes.

It would be challenging but I think the writers at TTG could pull it off pretty well. The last episode would theoretically be Guybrush..... I dunno who would be the 5th character maybe Herman.
  • edited June 2010
Herman is a good pick. He has such a backstory and he's a fun character. And there are a couple of plotholes writers can address while at it.

And just for kicks an episode starring 3 protagonists (Maniac Mansion/Lost Vikings Style):
Meathook, Carla and Otis working as a team, trying to get off Monkey Island.

If we're talking about characters who appear in every single game, that leaves Stan. But he's definitely not as major as the other 4.

Ooh! We could play as Stan haggling with the crew of chimps that sailed the Sea Monkey back from Monkey Island!

Rough ideas... and it still doesn't give away too much of Guybrush's history.... just the event that inspires him.... Hermans story would be the hardest... because you would have to figure out something for him to do.... but it would be the episode LeChuck dies and becomes a Ghost Pirate.

    Episode 1 Elaine
In attempts to smooth out relations with near by Spanish stronghold Isla Sendero... Elaine recruits Melee Island most notorious Pirate.. Dred Captain LeChuck to track down the legendary Secret of Monkey Island to present to the Spanish Governor... But LeChuck has Plans of his own.

    Episode 2 Voodoo Lady..
Disturbed by a Voodoo visions of all out war in the Caribbean the Voodoo Lady forms a plan to change the course of history but who can she trust?

    Episode 3 LeChuck
having fallen in love with Elaine in episode one.. LeChuck with the help of the voodoo lady sets out to find the famed Monkey Island.... But is it because of love or because there are rumors that the Island holds the secret of life after death..... and while he is out ... might as well pillage and plunder along the way...

    Episode 4 Herman
Being a resident on Monkey Island isn't easy and its gets worse when LeChuck shows up stirring up trouble with the local cannibals

    Episode 5 Guybrush
Sailing towards Isla Sendero... the ship upon which Guybrush is a passenger is attacked by a seemingly invincible ghost ship materializing from the fog itself... barely escaping the carnage to Isla Sendero.. Having now experienced excitement Guybrush decides to become a pirate... But there are rumblings of a fearsome new threat sailing the seas... blocking Guybrush from getting to the famous Pirate haven Melee Island. Having witnessed the threat first hand he wonders who is behind the ghost ship and if his pants are baggy enough to hold all his inventory that he will need.

I actually love that idea. Ever since EfMI, I've been quite curious to see how those three were able to escape the island. If the game were to eventuate, they'd have to make the solution (escaping Monkey Island) something quite horrible or disgusting in order to explain why none of the three wanted to discuss it when Guybrush asked them about it. They'd also have to make reference to and explain why Meathook though that Guybrush was killed by a giant clam.

Murray? lol I'd like Murray to be added on to that list he's one of my fav chars and I would buy a monkey island prequel more money island is better than none!
Murray: "...and the forces of darkness will applaud me as I STRIDE through the gates of hell carrying your head on a pike!"
    Guybrush: "Stride?"
Murray: "Alright then, ROLL! ROLL through the gates of hell..."

That's actually an interesting thing to think about; what Murray would have been like as a full skeleton, and even what he was like when he was human! I think there was actually a thread devoted to this actual topic, but it was quite a while ago and I really can't be bothered searching for it.

Edit: Oh, what do you know. It appears that I actually could be bothered.

Guybrush could interact with a familiar sounding human Murray in episode 5..

    also

Guybrush should not actually see or hear of LeChuck by name until Secret of Monkey Island.. but the player would know obviously...

I disagree with this. I would like this to remain Guybrush and Murray's first encounter with each other.

Yeah, I was about to post that. Although it's true that Guybrush practically ascends out of nowhere at the beginning of SOMI, there's more story to work with if you do a prequel during the time with the whole Elaine/LeChuck - thing taking place, playing someone else than Guybrush (which, granted, would feel odd if it's supposed to be a Monkey Island game).

Perhaps the whole prequel thing could work well as a movie. That way, we'll see everyone's back-story without having to play a different character that Guybrush.

But I actually want to play as a different character. I'm curious how someone like Herman or Meathook would solve a puzzle. There are lots of interesting characters in the MI games and I think some of them would make very interesting protagonists. And Monkey Island can really use some fresh air. We can't use the same formula over and over again.
We have so many things happening before Guybrush ever appears - Big Whoop, Grandpa Marley's demise, the tragic events of Blood Island, Elaine rejecting LeChuck which leads to his death and ressirection as a ghost, the Voodoo Lady's early days, Herman Toothrot's journey to Monkey Island, the Ultimate Insult, Largo's days as a right man of human LeChuck, Hellbeard, the Esponja Grande, the Cursed Ring in the cargo hold, the mystery of the monkey robot and the monkeys themselves... All this stuff makes for great prequel fuel.

Guybrush's first line ever has to be "Hi, I'm Guybrush Threepwood, and I want to be a a pirate". The idea that he even EXISTED before that seems blasphemous. As far as I'm concerned, he came into being at the top of the screen at the start of Secret of Monkey Island and, left with no identity to speak of, decided right then and there that he was going to be a pirate.
