I don't have the DVD yet (I also ordered the Deluxe version) but several people who have received the DVD have mentioned that it is the Earl Boen version.

    ol yay :) thanks

When the Earl Boen download cameout to mac, there were apparently some lines that were still spoken by Adam Harrington:

    -What?
    -As you wish my love.
-Arr, the evil of LeChuck is always evolving in new and terrifying ways, Sheepgood.

Does anyone know if these lines are voiced by Earl Boen on the DVD?

I wonder why they didnt update those lines.

That's because they are already spoken by Earl Boen.

Also, I'm pretty sure that all of the LeChuck lines were definitely updated. I can go into his voice folder and see that they were all created at the same time. I think his reads are just different sounding for those.

Edit: I went through and listened to all of the uncompressed wav files, and I can see where you are coming from on the What and As you wish lines, though the third is definitely him. But they were definitely created at the same time as the rest, so I can only assume it's him just sounding weird.

So it is Earl Boen, and people are just thinking its still Adam Harrington?

Yes. It's Earl Boen, who apparently sounds a bit different than in his other lines (I wouldn't know, haven't played the updated version), which led people to believe it was still Adam Harrington. Going by Will's post that is, but I see no reason to doubt him.

Could someone who has both the DVD and the downloaded version (or both PC and Mac downloadable versions) record these lines for both so we can actually hear them? It would be the easiest way for everyone to be sure they're not the same.

So, once the Earl Boen version of Narwhal is up for download, will this result in the Adam Harrington version being removed? Because, if so, I say everyone download it while they can, because if it is taken down then it will become something of a rarity; a digital collector's item.

Yea im pretty sure it will go, just like the old Siege of Spinner Cay with the bad audio. I wont be deleting my current Narwhal, Ill be keeping as a sort of digital collectors item :)

As will I. And plus, I don't mind Adam's take on LeChuck. There were actually some moments where I thought that he sounded great, "Har, har, har" was basically the only line that I didn't like from him. Everyone also complains about the screeches (like on "...will be mine"), but I actually though that those sounded quite cool. So, I won't just be keeping the original version of Narwhal just because it's like a collectible, I'll be keeping it because I genuinely like the job that Harrington did.

I've done a comparison of the three lines in question. The "Boen" versions sound, to me, exactly the same as the original Harrington voice, only the DVD version files have a slightly different audio filter.

My guess? Somehow the Boen versions of these three lines were recorded, but not inserted properly into the game build for some reason.

    The "Boen" read of "What?"

    The Harrington read of "What?"

The "Boen" read of "As you wish, my love."

The Harrington read of "As you wish, my love."

The "Boen" read of "Arr, the evil of LeChuck is always evolving in new and terrifying ways, Sheepgood."

The Harrington read of "Arr, the evil of LeChuck is always evolving in new and terrifying ways, Sheepgood."

Also, do note that if you install the DVD version of Narwhal, it'll overwrite the old version on your hard drive. So back the files up safely beforehand!

Okay, these do sound exactly the same. I'm guessing other lines sound completely different? (Sorry if that question seems insulting, but in case they were overwritten or something).

I guess your theory is plausible but that's a bit weird that it would be for just 3 lines. Huh.
  • edited June 2010
btw those who have the dvd to you need the disc in to play the game?
  • edited June 2010
Adding to what prizna said, I heard that the game speed increases with the DVD version. Does that include mouse speed?

Whoops! How tough do you suppose it would be for Telltale to make a tiny patch that would fix this? (Not that it's a huge deal, but still...)

The Evil evolving line is definitely re-recorded, and I'm not sure the other two are completely the same.
  • edited June 2010
They're definitely the same recordings. I layered each of the corresponding lines on top of one another in Audacity, and they visibly match up perfectly and play in perfect unison.

I'll double check with BASD to see if there is any chance those sound files exist on some hard drive somewhere, but I'm willing to bet they just didn't get recorded due to some error. I remember some back and forth conversations when this came up the first time, but I'll be damned if I can remember what came up of it.

The rest of the episodes should be more or less exactly what is on the website for download, just minus the DRM. I don't think that would improve performance in any way, but hey, if it works for you it works for me. I'll take it :)
  • edited June 2010
Yeah, I was the one that first brought this up. Bit of a shame this wasn't updated for the DVD, but whatever, there's always hope that these three lines still exist somewhere on Telltale's harddrives.
    :)

BTW: I still don't have the DVD yet, I'm just going off what everybody here is saying.
    :)

    Already thought and done. :)

I'd rather just forget the Adam Harrington version existed to be honest. No offence to the guy.

He just doesn't compare to Earl Boen as LeChuck, I'm so glad Telltale recorded the Epsiode 1 lines with Earl.

I can understand you're skeptical, not having played it yourself. Trust me, though. The two renditions of LeChuck almost always sound very audibly different. I'd say it's nearly impossible to confuse them.

Incidentally, I DID find one more line that wasn't re-recorded with Earl Boen's acting! It's played during the Easter Egg when Guybrush wishes he was "the mightiest pirate ever" at the Flotsam Island jungle wishing well.

    "Earl Boen" says "Arrr! No!"

    Adam Harrington says "Arrr! No!"

I think that's Dominic Armato doing a LeChuck imitation, since he is still Guybrush under that guise.

I still don't see what was wrong with the version they had. :P

Well, at the very least it's nice to have the voice actor from the last episode match up with the one from the first. :P

I'm sure this has already been answered elsewhere but I can't find it so...

Seeming that I don't have an internet connection on my gaming PC, will I be able to install and play the TOMI DVD? I'm sorry to ask but this is now the only thing standing between me actually purchasing a copy.

yup, no DRM. Not even a crumb.

I wonder how long it will take for someone to complain about the lack of DRM... :D

Not any internet-activated DRM crumbs anyway.

Also, nobody has asked if the Wii version of Narwhal will be updated....

:(. Unfortunately, it's *very* difficult to patch console versions of a game for various and sundry reasons. They generally do everything in their power to discourage any patching that isn't absolutely necessary.

I suppose the idea is that if they made patching too easy, people would be submitting half finished builds all the time, and expecting them to be patched 20 times after launch.

Strange, because my PS3 games update themselves regularly...

That's because Sony and Nintendo aren't the same company.

But Will made a general statement about consoles, not specifically Nintendo.

I can't really speak to other game companies or if they have any sort of special circumstances, I just know what the letter of the law says. It ain't cheap, believe you me.

Why are there two different versions of this game, to begin with? Is the Earl Boen MI an 18+ version?
