Monkey Island over priced, how much would you pay for a Monkey Island game

Doing my search on Ebay, and i came across a so called Rare Secret of Monkey Island CD in a dvd case, by FM town, its a Japanese version....the seller is asking for US $1,100.00 Approximately £743.19 for Bristish pounds, now thats alot of money, since you can actually still get the orignal in box on PC for so much cheaper, even on CD, and even for that price there asking for $16.00 for shipping

Now how much would you pay for a Monkey Island game or whats the maximum you would spend?

heres the ebay listing

"Never pay more than 50 bucks for a computer game"

    That's a ridiculous price... I wouldn't pay 100$ for a game, 1,100$ is just ridiculous...

It all depends on how much you want to complete your collection....

I for one would never pay that much.... but I can see where someone would... if its a just once kind of thing.

FM Town versions are always expensive.

    I thought it was 20!

The PC CD version probably is dependent on where you find it. I got all the Monkey Island games at once, excluding the latest chapters for my 15th birth day for far less money than that.

That was 7 years ago though.

I am going stick with with the Special Editions for a few bucks.

I might be an MI fan, but I am not a hardcore MI fan. :P

    WHAT

I paid 15 bucks for that back in the day at kmart. Now I really really really want to punch my sister for lending it out to some person I didn't know and now it would cost an arm to replace

Ah! That is insanity. And yet, if I had money to burn, I'd buy it. :p

I'm so glad I have most of the Monkey Island games already. Although I am missing SMI on the original disks, that I would like to get my hands on. At least I have it on the CD.

I'll have to stick to piracy and/or taking the files from the Special Editions.

I wasn't alive when The Secret of Monkey Island was released, and I only became a gamer at about 2005-ish. I never had a chance.

I got into Monkey Island too late to buy the games first-hand too, except for Escape, which I got for a birthday once.
I did find a copy of Curse in great condition on eBay though, so if you really want the games, that's the way to go. And not all copies on there are $1100 ;)

I said I became a gamer at about 2005-ish. I hadn't heard of Monkey Island until, like, 2008.

    And I don't trust ebay...

Plus, I really hate buying stuff second-hand :P

It does take a bit of trust and experience, but eBay also has good policies in place to prevent scams. Just don't bid on any auction that uses a stock photo ;)

That is annoying, yeah, but when the choice is between 'second hand' and 'no copy at all', it isn't hard to choose, especially when Monkey Island is concerned :)

I've actually bid on a lot of auctions that used stock photos. What you want to look at more than anything else is seller feedback. Generally powersellers with thousands of sales and 99% approval are safe bets.

That's works? I did not know that! I was always so worried about my games, I always thought they might break. And that's the CD with SMI and LR that does that? Or the CD of just SMI?

I went on ebay and found a box of original CD slicases for SMI. It's asking for $1,995.00

I know the CD with just SMI can be played like an audio CD. I found that out when I was a kid -- I'm not sure what possessed me to see what would happen if I put it in my CD player, but it does work and it does not harm the game in any way. The first track contains the game data, so if you play that, you'll only hear static, but that doesn't hurt the disc either. I must have listened to the songs dozens of times when I was little, and 18 years later, I still have the disc and the game and audio still play fine.

I have no info on the SMI+LCR CD, though.

I've got the White Label double pack disc and that plays in my cd player fine. I think it's just the music from SMI but not 100% certain.

It's called "redbook audio" ('redbook' being the name of the audio CD standard.) It's not that common in recent games, as encoding has vastly improved over the years, but originally, apparently one of the better ways to have CD-quality audio in a game was to literally include audio CD playable music on the disc. I have a copy of Descent 2 somewhere that also has Redbook audio.

As for the question of whether an SMI+MI2 disc has redbook audio: yes, it does, but only for SMI. MI2 still uses midi music.

(Yes, I know about typos in the track info... whoever originally submitted the metadata to Gracenote didn't know how to spell.)

EDIT: oh, lol. Don't be confused about it saying SOMI for E:, as that is my virtual drive to mount images on (and has my custom made SOMI:SE installer mounted atm for some reason.)
