Okay, I just want to say: stop. The game is mediocre at best, and is a shining example of how games currently aren't art; it tries to have meaning, but all it does is make you shrug and go, 'that's cool I guess'. I was introduced to the game a few months back, and was shocked at everyone praising the game. It's a very lame platformer that really doesn't make sense, plus basing something on a quote is like building a skyscraper with cream cheese; absolutely and incredibly silly, and so mediocre in quality that it's ridiculous. The fact that you 'aren't supposed to tell anyone' is incredibly stupid as well; I can't state in words how much is wrong with telling someone there is something wrong with a game. The game should be marketed very differently, and it just falls apart as a massive trainwreck.

Ringmaster, I recorded a video of myself playing it for about 30 minutes a few days ago (I suck) - totally beaten to the punch by X by about a day, by the way - but I lost all of the audio. I'm gonna record myself speaking and put some music over it and then post it, so it might be a few days before you get to see it. I hope the music cues aren't an important part of this game...

That... kind of defeats the purpose of this Challenge. One of the perks of a video is being able to record your first reaction to everything from the
    black wave of death
in Level 3 to the ending.

Don't worry, the video I made still has the audio of me speaking, it's just choppy and out of sync with the actual video. I'm just going to re-record what I said in audacity.

    "Audacity"?

Yeah, it's an audio editing program (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) . I'm going to re-record all of the dialogue from my video so that the quality is bearable.

For some reason, in my original recording the audio cuts out regularly so you can barely hear what I'm saying, and it's completely out of sync with the video by the end of it.

I just don't want a "faked/forced" reaction to things like the aforementioned
    black wall of death
    in Level 3 or the
    hellhands
    in Level 4.

I see what you're saying. I might just narrate it instead of re-enacting it, like in X's half-life 2 videos (which I assume you might have seen). That way I'd still be able to give my reaction to things and won't have to "pretend" either.

    That's fine.

    First two levels notes:
Do I need DOSbox to play this?

    Guess not.

"Not suitable for children or those of a nervous desposition", I am offically intrigued.

Ummm... What is the Evert button?

    Okay, it's space.

    "Ready!" No.

The first block formation reminds me of Super Mario Bros.

Mutant flower attacking mutant peaches. Weird.

Why can't I jump on the clouds?

    Level 1-2:

I have a feeling there's some way to jump on the clouds...

Okay, the flower is in the background, but the shrub isn't?

Okay, HOW DO I JUMP ON THE STUPID CLOUDS?

    Maybe the "Evert" button?

    No...

Do I need some sort of power-up? Man, I stink at this...

Do I need all the Gems?

No, you need to go on clouds to get some of the gems...

    Kill all the enemies?

Okay, I give up. Maybe Ringmaster knows...

Well, can you help me, Ringmaster?

Every time you see the screen change in color, use the evert button. You'll figure it out.

Okay... I'll try. Can you save the game? EDIT: Never mind, it autosaves.

Okay, I just want to say: stop.
Stop just because you don't enjoy the game?

it might amuse everyone that I cross-posted this to a half-dozen other forums and there hasnt been a single bite... apparently only those of us on this site were... willing... to take the challenge.

What Shwoo said. As you can see, multiple people here do like this game.
The game is mediocre at best, and is a shining example of how games currently aren't art; it tries to have meaning, but all it does is make you shrug and go, 'that's cool I guess'. Did people spoil the game for you before playing? That makes a HUGE difference.
plus basing something on a quote is like building a skyscraper with cream cheese; absolutely and incredibly silly, and so mediocre in quality that it's ridiculous.

Slight correction: It was made for an indie game contest that had a Lovecraft theme.
    The fact that you 'aren't supposed to tell anyone' is incredibly stupid as well;

It's not very interesting if you don't play it "blind".
I can't state in words how much is wrong with telling someone there is something wrong with a game. The game should be marketed very differently, and it just falls apart as a massive trainwreck.

Honestly, I don't understand what you are trying to say here.

Actually the reason I played it is that I'd heard the way the game progressed and thought it sounded interesting, and I loved it. I just like platformers, I guess. And the surprise was still there, because I didn't know all the details.

Well, it seems to me that Ribs was told everything about the game from the start.

I played it essentially blind and I really didn't find it all that great. It is just mediocre at best.

I beat the game the other day. I took the challenge sort of because i've never heard of the game before. The first time something happened that was unexpected, I was scared. I got the worst ending possible because I didn't care for gems, but it wasn't scary at all. I did mute my volume though during it.

Please edit your post to the above or something similar. Also, the sound does add to the atmosphere of the game.

I've been having a lot of problems with my microphone and sound card, and all of the audio I've recorded is unusable, so I won't be uploading my video.

My impressions were, though, that this game is incredibly overrated. I don't see anything special about it at all. I understand that the fact that it turns out not to just be a mario clone is supposed to be shocking, but the fact is, that's the least I expected. It wasn't very fun to play and there was nothing in there that surprised me or that I haven't seen done better in the past. That said, though, the music in this game was awesome and the graphics were generally quite good too. At points, though, the graphics were really bad (key example:
the hands that shoot up out of the ground looked badly drawn and weren't even anti-aliased
    ).

Can someone tell me why this game is getting so much praise?
