Favorite Temporal Jump in Movies/Game

Anyone have a favorite sequence of time travel that the time vehicles undertake?

My personal favorite was after the Biff's Pleasure Paradise escape. The fanfare kind of kicks in, and the DeLorean comes FLYING and BOOMING into frame, and does a hard brake and lands. Just looked like a really cool effect. >_>

    The original trip to 1955...especially the first time I saw it. You see the speedometer go to 88 and you know the time circuits are on so you know time travel is going to happen but you don't know what EXACTLY what it's gonna be like from Marty's POV...and then, one second, outside the windshield, from Marty's POV, we see him about to crash into a Photo Booth at the mall...next second, FLASH and he's in an empty field about to crash into a scarecrow...a sudden vivid juxtaposition between present and past, modern and primitive, that is a great way to depict travelling back in time.

    I also like the return from 1885 at the end of BTTF3...we see the Delorean disappear in 1885 the instant before it would have gone into Shonash Ravine. We then see the locomotive wreck and we see the ravine. Then, we see a shot of the same place 100 years later, an instant flashforward before our eyes. And then suddenly, out of nowhere, we hear three sonic booms and the Delorean materialises before our eyes, unchanged and still on the same path, even though everything around it has changed so much in the same place...and Marty is back home at last!
  • This is a tough one because there's so many to mention;

    Both of marty's time jumps in part I were great. The first one being a chase, the last one because it needed to be so precise

    Part II the biff escape one was pretty need especially docs last words before it happened WE MUST SUCCEED. This is definitely the best flying time jump.

    part III the train sequence was the longest drawn out time jump.

    I think i'll have to go with the original jump by Marty to 1885. Just due to the build up and seeing Doc's reaction.

    In the game;
    episode 1's one and only on screen time jump to 1931 was classic although didn't do anything that hadn't been done before. I believe this is the only time in the game we see a delorean exit one time AND enter another except the final time travel in episode 2. All the others show one or another
    The beginning time travel in episode 4 with marty and FCB and FCB saying 'call me doc'.

    One aspect of the depicted time jumps in The Game, which I felt was inconsistent with the rules of BTTF as shown in the movies, is that whenever we see the Delorean travel to the past, we usually see it from an 'external' POV (i.e., we see it disappear, leaving behind flare trails). Actually, we shouldn't even be seeing the flare trails left behind...because, in keeping with the movies, whenever the Delorean goes back, the existing timeline is erased and replaced by a new one which takes into account all the actions the time traveller would have carried out in the past. That's the reason why, whenever the Delorean goes back in the movies, we see it from the 'internal' (i.e. Marty's) POV (the flash of light across the windshield and the scenery outside changing), or we don't see the departure but only the re-entry into the new time period...the only exceptions to this are when Marty sees LP Marty vanish in the Delorean in the mall at the end of BTTF1 (though that isn't the 'original'
    version of this particular time jump, but the 'revised' version of it in the new timeline) and when Doc is struck by lightining (though in that case, its pretty clear that Marty, being immune to the ripple effect, has the timeline change around him, so we can still see the Delorean vanish, and the flame spirals, from an external POV, as we see what Marty sees, and we unknowingly witness the destruction of the previous timeline and its replacement with a new one).

    And its pretty clear we're not seeing the altered timeline after we see the Delorean vanish and the flare trails...cuz in Episode 2, Marty and Doc disappear in the flying Delorean from the alternate Tannen Mob timeline, and even after they've disappeared, we see the aged Kid Tannen of this timeline looking up at the flare trails...going by the trilogy, the moment Marty and Doc left, the Tannen Mob timeline should have transformed into the FCB timeline...

    My favorite scene is the original one of Marty going to 1985 but in the second movie when after we see Doc's reaction, which is pretty awesome, we see the other Marty running around the corner. I always loved that scene.

    I also quite like it when they go to 2015 in the second film is cool just because of Biff's reaction.

    The one's stated above are good too.

    Never thought about it but let's go through the ones seen on screen;
    1. Einstein going 1 minute into the future; fire trails
    2. Marty going 30 years into the past; shown internally
    3. marty going 30 years into the future from 1955; fire trails
    4. doc, marty, and jennifer going 30 years into the future from 1985; fire trails
    5. marty, doc, jennifer, and marty going 30 years into the past from 2015; internally
    6. marty and doc going 30 years into the past from 1985; does not show them exit 1985, only showing them enter 1955
    7. doc getting struck by lightning, sent 70 years into the past; fire trails
    8. marty going 70 years into the past from 1955; internally
    9. marty going 100 years into the future from 1885; fire trails

    never thought of it this way until you brought it up!

    You might also want to add LP Marty going back to the past, with fire trails...though its technically the same event as 2, albeit seen from a different POV.

    Again notice that the three instances where we see the trip internally are all travels to the past...the other instances when we see travel to the past are no. 6 (where we don't even see the departure) and no. 7 (the only time we actually see the Delorean go back in time and see time continue after that in the new timeline from the POV of someone watching it disappear). The game shows the external view and firetrails when the Delorean goes back...actually there shouldn't even BE fire trails when the Delorean goes back, because the timeline is erased as soon as the Delorean goes back...the fire trails if any would only be there in the new timeline, where time continues beyond the second of temporal displacement...but when Marty and Doc leave the first alternate 1986 in episode 2, we see the fire trails in the sky and the aged Kid Tannen watching them...which is impossible because this version of Kid Tannen shouldn't even EXIST to watch the fire trails the moment the Delorean goes back.

    See your theory is kind of disputed by Marty seeing himself go back in time but mind you the events he will encounter in 1955 have already happened. I don't see why the fire trails shouldnt happen for a time travel into the past, just because they go back in time and the timeline changes, doesn't necissarily mean the time travel doesn't. Marty would still go to 1955 from 1985, Doc would ensure it to keep the timeline intact. You can argue whether any of the first 3 time travels we see on screen in part II happen given the fact that they undergo timelines where they may or may not happen (going to 2015, back to 1985, and back to 1955). Presumably the doc getting struck by lightning happens in all timelines in the movies from that point on. The same may or may not be true for Marty going to 1885.

    My favorite time jump by far is the climax of Part 1 where Marty is sent back to 1985. The intensity, Doc swinging off the clock tower, the car reving up toward the theater, and the lightning stricking the rod! That's why I love that Part II Marty adds to that moment, it's perfect.

    Yeah the more I think about it, that is the critical point to the trilogy and the only scene shown in all 3 films.

    Why are there firetrails anyway? And why doesn't the Delorean need new tires everytime it jumps? :p :D

    But when Marty sees himself go back, its not in the same timeline but in the new timeline.

    Look at it this way.

    In Twin Pines 1985, the moment Marty goes back in time, that timeline ceases to exist, along with everyone in it. It is replaced by Lone Pine 1985...now despite all the changes made in 1955, Lone Pine 1985 is by and large similar in many respects to Twin Pines 1985-so much so that the event of Marty's temporal displacement occurs identically in this timeline. However, LP Marty's trip to the past, while identical to TP Marty's, isn't the 'original' trip back to the past...it's merely a duplicate of the event which happened in the original timeline. LP Marty's going back in time doesn't serve to change the past...in fact, technically, all it does is rid the world of an extra Marty.

    Okay, suppose someone who is immune to the ripple effect (say a time traveller from the future) is present at the mall, the moment TP Marty goes back in time, from his POV, he would see the mall sign change, and maybe he would suddenly notice another Marty materialising out of no where...and Doc would suddenly have been wearing a bulletproof vest "all along". So, the moment TP Marty goes back, the observer is shifted to the new timeline...however things are superficially at least, in many ways the same as the previous timeline. Thus the flare trails are there, because even in this timeline, Marty went back.

    However, that shouldn't be the case with the Kid Tannen ruled timeline. In that timeline, if an observer were present, the moment Marty and Doc hit 88 miles per hour in the air, reality would have transformed around the observer, such that the aged Kid Tannen would simply vanish from existence, rather than be able to grit his teeth at the disappearing Delorean...in fact, the moment they go back, the Tannen ruled timeline should be transformed into the FCB timeline. The flare trails shouldn't even be there, because in the FCB timeline, Marty and Doc didn't make that trip back.

    Also, I'm gonna have to add the final jump sequence towing Edna back to 1931 with the DeLoreans as a fav too. I loved that DeLorean-chasing-DeLorean sequence. XP
