Why did I give my bananas away ?

I gave some bananas to that monkey in the original Monkey Island so it would follow me but as I can remember I never needed the monkey's help. Am I going mad ?

    The monkey hangs from a branch near the giant monkey head, thereby triggering (and holding down) a mechanism that lets you get closer.
