BIG problem

i am trying to play this game. i got it from steam gifting. but, i cant play it. and i really want to, because: tf2 unlocks. funny dialogue. and i cant do it. it says:" great, your logged in! but we dont see this game in your inventory." and i have to do one of these unlock things. ex. serial numbers etc. Help!
