Ep1 decisions not being picked up by epII - PC
OK, so after the false start with Ep1, the silence while we waited for Ep2, the baffling wait between the Xbox version and the PC version, I've *finally* been able to install Ep2! Yay etc!!!
Only it's not picking up on my bloody Ep1 decisions.
All I get is an option to either load an old ep1 save (I actually played through the final scene at the Motel again to see if it auto-continued to the next EP), or start a New Game with Ep2 and "Randomized Decisions".
Seriously Telltale - this is unacceptable now. I've been patient but it's gone way past a joke.
In the interests of documenting the problem, I...
Windows 7 pro x64, 8GB memory, AMD FX-8120, GeForce GTX570 and so on and so forth. On the off-chance that anyone on the Telltale team with a technical insight into the game's workings happens to glance at the forum, I'm happy to upload whatever error/log dumps you desire. Let's face it - it's not like I'll be doing anything interesting instead, such as playing the game I paid for 5 episodes of in advance, right?

In the interests of documenting the problem, I...
- Originally installed the Steam version (I paid for the Telltale Version, but obviously the launch got screwed up so I used the steam key I was sent)
- Finished Ep 1 - and indeed all of my decisions are still viewable on the stats page
- Got Ep 2 through a steam update of The Walking Dead Game
- My decisions weren't carried over.
- Re-installed + redownloaded Ep1 + Ep2 via steam
- Uninstalled the steam version
- Installed the Telltale Version
- Downloaded Ep2 using the Telltale Version
- Partway through the download the game stopped saying "downloading xxx%" reverted to the "Get" button and froze there for the duration of the download (I tracked the download in Windows Task Manager by basically watching the network usage)
- STILL couoldn't get it to pick up on my past decisions
- Ran as admin + every other compatability tweak I can think of
- Gave up
- Came to the forum to make this post
- Which brings us to now.

Eghad! It is fixed! All on it's own (well, not really but it works now)
The solution is, apparently simple. For those having the same problem, here's how I did it.
... and at that point it suddenly decided that yes, it was OK to continue an old save onto Ep2 without wanting to Randomize the decisions! Why it decided to do it then is beyond my comprehension, but the only thing I can think of that was different for the last time was the copious swearing. So my advice;
If your EP1 decisions aren't being carried over, you're not swearing enough.
If you find you've been swearing and it's still not working for you, it's possible that you're swear words are not up to scratch. Anyone wanting assistance with swearing can drop me a PM, and I'll forward you the details of a course in Advanced Swearing that helped me no end around the time Fallout 3 was launched.
But a good end product doesn't justify the QA and Customer Service for the Walking Dead games being so woefully sub-par. I'm not going to make a big fuss about this, but whereas I've pre-paid for pretty much everything Telltale well in advance of release date since the 1st Sam & Max run, I can't really justify doing that any more. Now, obviously Telltale have a hit series on their hands now so that's probably not going to bother their bottom line too much but I dunno - I just expected more from them I suppose *shrug*
Oh well, at least they aren't the only company producing decent adventure games any more.
You're a genius.
This is the most unhelpful, completely pointless post on a thread I've ever encountered in my life. Not only isn't it of any use whatsoever to anyone who's having problems with the game, but it doesn't even make any sense. Think you missed a couple of verbs out there, buddy.
Ah, illiterati.
Thank you for dropping by and expressing your views in such a grammatically ambitious fashion:)
For what its worth that made me laugh quite a bit.
I'm in the process of correcting that oversight now. How many hours of cursing did it take you? I don't want to undercorrect...
Hope that helps you:)
So I played through the ending of episode one on the save I wanted and let the credits roll to the end. My hope was that episode 2 would load automatically at the end of episode one (which it of course did not). However when I looked at my saved games again one of them was missing entirely (as in an empty slot) and the saved game I was trying to load had been rewritten and said I just created it that day. I loaded episode 2 from the rewritten save file and sure enough my choices were carried over.
Still it isn't perfect now. Whenever I try to I return to the main menu the game seems to think episode 2 is no longer installed and has yet to be released. I have to restart the program for it to register correctly again. Also the rewind feature for episode 2 is non-existent and I have keep hitting the play button as the continue button does not appear either. Also my stats are completely unrecognized and are listed as: Choice 1, Choice 2, Choice 3, etc. with 50% for both sides.
So I was able to see my choices in episode 2, but if this isn't fixed at some point I have a strong feeling they won't be carried over to episode 3.
Possible soultion copy/pasted from HERE
For those who have the problem where their decisions don't carry over:
-Possible Fix-
The game stores a "prefs.prop" in two places. One in:
C:\Users\___\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead
And the other in:
\STEAM\steamapps\common\the walking dead\Pack\default
Or if you don't have the Steam version, its somewhere in your game DIR.
Do backups before overwriting anything.
Copy the prefs.prop file from your game's DIR folders, and overwrite it in your Documents\TTG\TWD folder
Go in game and load the save game with your finished EP1. Switch to EP2 in the chapter select and run it.
This worked for me when any other solution did not. My decisions carried over.
This worked for me too, with one caveat: the line
\STEAM\steamapps\common\the walking dead\Pack\default
is not the default location of Steam games. This one is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\the walking dead\Pack\default
Of course, if you've installed your Steam games directory in some place other than default, one assumes that you remember where and can find it again...
But once again, great find and I hope the Mods sticky this or add it to the FAQs or something to make it easier to find for the many of us who suffered from this problem!
Bought ep.1 and 2 together on Steam.
Finished ep.1.
Started ep.2 from the only save I had : decisions not being picked up (Doug/Carley is the more visible problem).
Loaded ep.1 at Doug/Carley chapter and finished ep.1 again.
Started ep.2 from the save : still not picking up decisions.
Deleted my save.
Restarted and finished ep.1.
Started ep.2 from the save : still not picking up decisions.
I'm giving up, the only good thing in the game is the story, so if it's bugged as hell, I'm not going to play this zero-interest-gameplay game anymore. The only thing that has to work in this game is this fucking decisions system, this is the only good thing. The QTE system, minimalist research and reflexion, and closed environments are worthy of web flash games.
