TWD: Could not Initialize Direct3d

Hey,

I've been looking all over the forums and haven't been able to find a solution that fixes my problems. So far I have:
Updated my video drivers
Updated to new Realtek HD Drivers
Checked my DirectX version

And all of it seems up to date and I'm still getting these problems. When I try to boot the game (through steam) the screen goes black then the game enters a window and immediately goes white concealing an error that says the game could not initialize the direct 3d. Attached is a text file with my dxdiag run. I first encountered this problem when I was playing with the resolutions in game when it caused a CTD and then the problem persisted.

Any help is much appreciated! Thanks

Okay, that sounds like the game saved settings that don't work.
These are stored in the prefs.prop, but if you just delete it, you won't have access to your savegames anymore.
The Siezemore fix should reset your settings and restore access to your savegames at once.
Make sure you make a backup copy of
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead
    before, just in case.

Thanks for the reply, however even after I remove the folder I'm still getting the same CTD and blank screen.

Is there another prefs.prop in your
    Steam\SteamApps\common\the walking dead\Pack\default\
    folder?
Some people seem to have that. If so, move it so the game doesn't find it.

If that doesn't help either, keep the backup you made earlier, and try completely uninstalling and reinstalling the game.

That's awesome. You're welcome. If your save games are missing now, you can use the fix from above.

hey i have this same problem except not only does it say "could not initialize the direct 3d" it also has a little window after that which says "unfortunately this error cannot be recovered"
    i have tried a lot
installing direct3d again, installing the game again, running as admin, changing compatibility mode, checking for updates on my drivers none of it has worked

one thing i've noticed is when i search the steam/steamapps/common/the walking dead\Pack\default there IS NO prefs.prop file in there i dunno whether that makes a difference,

can anyone help me? am i well n truly fuccked when it comes to playin walkin dead? D:

Did the earlier episodes work, or are you just starting?

the earlier episodes worked fine, then when i tried to play the third it just wouldnt load full stop, i tried the "run adminstrator" thing n once it did that thats when the direct3d error occured, thanks for your help! i feel very defeated lol

I don't know if there is a way that won't delete the savegames, so let's be careful.
The easiest way to debug this is by creating a new windows user profile. If it works there, it's something in the games settings file or registry.

Alternatively you can make a backup of
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead
and then delete the prefs.prop. That file contains information about your savegames though, so if it works then, you can try the fix mentioned above to restore your savegames.

when i go to Steam\SteamApps\common\the walking dead\Pack\default\ there is no prefs.prop file it doesnt exist i dunno whether that means anything,

at this point i dont care about my saved game anymore i'll play quite happily with randomized settings

gunna try creating a new windows profile now see if that works startin to think there may be somethin wrong with my graphics card cept other games work ok which is weird..

Have you tried these steps from the support FAQ?

If that's not it, please post your Dxdiag info:
    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.
Sometimes the Forums spam filter catches long posts like this. Don't worry, we can still see them and make them visible.

i have checked the 32 bit colour thing and dont use double monitors, pretty sure the graphics card meets the requirements since i could play it before however i did take the card out and put it back in before i tried to play TWD again, i dunno if it could be damaged but when i checked for updates it said it was working fine, anyway heres my dxiag info thanks so much for your help

According to your dxdiag it is a notebook. Your notebook has a removable graphics card?

Sadly i don't have any reasonable ideas what could help. We already ruled out wrong settings by trying the new windows user account, and since it worked before nothing seems to make much sense.

Some random things you could try though:
    - Trying a clean boot (see below)
    - Updating your graphics driver and audio driver
    - Running windows update (You don't have SP1 installed, so other updates might be missing)

Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    4. Select the Services tab
    5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
    6. Click Disable all
    7. If running the game on Steam, re-check the "Steam Client Service"
    8. Click on OK
    9. Click Restart.
    10. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your settings by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click Ok
    4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

pretty sure my graphics card is removable as i took out this card thing out before TWD had stopped working and put it back in (it was a mistake when i took it out)
tried the "boot clean in windows" solution and it still didnt work,

when i run a windows update it gives me an error saying a system error prevented a service pack from installing n the "check for system update readiness" thing doesnt work either :/

i'm guessing it just will never work on my laptop but thank you very much for putting the time and effort into helping me
