TWD: Steam solution!

Hey,

USE THIS SOLUTION AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!! IT MAY OR MAY NOT WORK, BUT IT DID FOR ME!!!!!

I MAY HAVE FOUND A SOLUTION TO RESTORE YOUR SAVE FILES!!!! BUT BE WARNED.. I HAVEN'T PLAYED THE GAME YET... ONLY LOADED THE PREVIOUSLY ON THE WALKING DEAD SCREEN AND MY CHOICES WERE INTACT. NO MESSAGE ASKING TO GENERATE RANDOM CHOICES FROM MISSED EPISODES. USE THIS SOLUTION AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!! IT MAY OR
MAY NOT WORK, BUT IT DID FOR ME!!!!! Thanks can be said to this steam user: Kozuke

I've been browsing the steam forums, here, and facebook trying to find a solution to the problem many people playing this game have had. Ever since episode 4 has released, people have been unable to load previous save data into the next episode. I was one of those. This morning, I doubled checked for news... tried a solution i saw on the steam forums and it worked! My save data was back and the choices I made were restored. THIS MAY NOT WORK!!! But it worked for me!!! Follow these steps:

1.) Go to My Documents/TellTale Games/The Walking Dead.

2.) Once you are in the walking dead folder, COPY and PASTE the prefs.prop
file onto your desktop. DO NOT DELETE IT OR MOVE IT FROM IN THE FOLDER ITSELF OR FROM THE DESKTOP. this prefs.prop is ur orginal one and you want to keep it.

3.) Keep this window open and in a new one go to Computer/C/Programfiles(x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/thewalkingdead/Pack/WalkingDead103... Or where your steamapps folder happens to be.

4.) There locate the prefs.prop file. (In WALKINGDEAD103) if it's not in here... try looking in the other folders for prefs.prop, but BE WARNED I AM NOT SURE IF THE REST OF THIS WILL WORK!!!! IF IT'S A DIFFERENT ONE!

5.)DO NOT DELETE EITHER prefs.prop FILES FROM EITHER PLACE!!!! Once there copy and paste the 103 prefs.prop into your documents walking dead folder (that you left open). COPY AND REPLACE IT! AND KEEP THE pref.prop you created on your DESKTOP!!! DO NOT DELETE IT! You are replacing the document prefs.prop WITH the 103 prefs.prop.

6.) Close both folders and restart steam (if it was open... if not do it anyway). Then open up the walking dead game and try playing one of your games wtih episode 4. IF IT DOESN'T WORK DO NOT GET UPSET! Close the game again and close steam.

7.)THIS IS WHERE YOUR DESKTOP prefs.prop WILL COME IN!!!!!

8.)Go back to your walking dead folder in documents (My Documents/TellTale Games/The Walking Dead.)

9.) Using the prefs.prop on your DESKTOP (the original one)... MOVE AND REPLACE it. Causing the 103 prefs.prop to back to the orginal one.

10.) Close the folder again and restart steam (if you left it open if not just restart it anyway). Open the walking dead game and try playing episode 4... and IT SHOULD HAVE YOUR CHOICES BACK!!!!

If this didn't work for you I am sorry... I'm restating the steps I followed from the steam forums and added in creaating my desktop orginal prefs.prop step one so as not to loose it. Just copying and pasting the 103 prefs.prop didn't work me at first... so i figured I had nothing to loose by restoring it to its orginal standards.

If this solution worked for you plz spread this solution around so we can solve other gamers of the walking dead's problems.

This indeed fixed it. The steps are much shorter though, you have to do the following:

    1) Go to the following directory in your steam folder:
    %steam%\steamapps\common\the walking dead\Pack\WalkingDead103 -- (%steam% can be C:\Program Files\Steam for instance)
    2) Copy the prefs.prop file.
    3) Go to My Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead
    4) Rename the prefs.prop file to prefs.prop.original.
    5) Paste the prefs.prop file you copied.

That will then most likely have fixed your savefile problems.

This isn't perfect for me, I lose stats for ep 2 and 3 and at least one decision was wrong in the recap (I took Lily with us, it says I left her).

I'm amazed this hasn't gotten more press. It's a weak fix (that needs to keep being reapplied) to a huge problem.

I tried doing this, but I don't have a prefs.prop file in my steam folders. I do have one in my documents/telltalegames one though. Is it hidden elsewhere or am I totally screwed?

I'm sorry... I don't know much about this kind of stuff. This worked for me so I figured it might work for some other people too. Maybe you coud have someone their prefs.prop to you... may or may not work... but be warned you might loose more than you gain by doing that.

Hey i just got the fix to work using Aeterna fix but took prefs.prop from my old my documents folder which i made a back up of before formatting my computer. i believe if you have not backed up this folder before you formatted you have lost your files.

Thanks for the help boston333410 & Aeterna.

Nice to see some solutions but seems to be much of a hassle for something that should be a simple fix from TTG's end.
