Yet another "game crashes at launch"

Hi,

So I decided to purchase Walking Dead today after hearing many good things about it both from the media and word of mouth. Unfortunately, I made the error to not read up on how there's a prevalent problem with the game from the game not launching (what I am experiencing now) to save data problems.

Now, I realize that there are a majority of people who have no problems with running this game, but I seem to have fallen into the category of people who just can't get this game to run. And from what I've read so far, you guys haven't exactly pinned down what is going on.

my system:

Core 2 Duo 2.9ghz
8 Gigs of RAM
GTX 460 1GB
Win7

The main crashing point seems to be when I "click to continue" and during the "connect" portion (sometimes right after clicking), the game crashes out and WalkingDead101.exe stops working.
And yes, I've tried the troubleshoot you provided, I updated my drivers, and verified game data with steam. I even tried out many of the user provided solutions. Disconnecting the internet still has it crash on the connect phase, restarting computer/steam = nada. Re-installing steam, which I thought was pointless, proved to be just that. Never had trouble running any other games until I got to this one.

And if worst comes to worst (problem never gets fixed/patched), a refund is out of the question, isn't it? I'll happily provide video proof that this program is not working on my computer.

    Fix this, please.

If you recently started Steam and encountered the message that your game files 'would be converted into a more efficient format', then you will need to reinstall Steam and then check to see if there are any newly created prefs.prop files. Steam's new conversion changed various game directories, and the prefs file that governs your saves may have been duplicated into one of these directories. First, pleast check your Documents\Telltale Games directory. If you have a Gamedata folder in there, please delete it. Your saves and prefs will be in the Walking Dead folder, so please do not touch these. Now go to the directory where you installed Steam and select steamapps\common\the walking dead. In this folder you may find a prefs file. Please delete this. Also check your Pack folder and then each episode folder (WalkingDead102, WalkingDead103, and WalkingDead104) to make sure there is no prefs.prop file in there.

Could not start the game at all, like I said, it ALWAYS crashes at the title screen. I had bought this game 1-2 days ago. It crashes right after I "click to continue". I don't see how I can have any save game data if I can not even start a game.

I checked the document/Telltale Games folder and the only prefs.prop file was IN the Walking Dead folder, the one you said to NOT delete. I have not found any prefs file in any other files related to Telltale or Walking dead.

I've never had steam prompting me to convert any game's format, but I'll re-install steam anyways. I heavily doubt this will correct the problem and I'm basically stuck with a $25 worth of troubleshooting and hours wasted.
Also, as I stated before, running the game in compatibility mode and as admin (along with steam) did not fix this problem.

I do appreciate your help, MattP, but it is really disheartening that things like this is downplayed because a "small minority" of people are getting technical errors that directly interferes with their ability to play this game. Bringing this problem up outside of these forums gets us barraged with people who have successfully played the games to attack us and pretty much dismiss anything is going since they themselves are not getting any problems.
I should've waited for the 5th episode to come out, maybe after that point, Telltale will focus on debugging their game for this "small minority" of customers.

I am having the same problem, I bought the game and it had crashes when I "click to continue".

I have re-installed the game, direct x, run in every compatible mode, re-installed steam, none have worked.

I'm having the same problems as well. Tried everything I've found that said it might help but to no avail. I was really looking forward to playing this game too. Hopefully a solution will be found that will fix this problem.

Okay I don't know what part of this caused the game to work but here is what I did. I updated Java, installed all the windows updates, went to Nvidia's website and downloaded the beta driver that was released for my card a week ago and then restarted my comp. And for some reason the game works now. Might have been the uninstalling Steam and reinstalling it last night and it only took effect after I restarted but I'm not sure. I'm also running it in compatibility with Windows 98/ME and with disable visual themes, disable desktop composition and disable display scaling on high DPI settings and with dinput8.dll in my walking dead folder. So I'm not sure which of these "fixes" actually caused the game to work. Sorry I couldn't be more help to the ones that are still having it not work. I know how frustrating this is for you.

Just for those with the "...hast stopped working" crash after "click to continue", have you tried disabling your network adapters?

Also please post your dxdiag info.

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.
Windows 8: At the start screen, type in "dxdiag" and hit enter

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.
Sometimes the Forums spam filter catches long posts like this. Don't worry, we can still see them and make them visible.

^ Wait what? Disable the network adapter? That kind of defeats the purpose of Steam, especially since it syncs after the game closes. You'd basically lose all your progress.

I'm also having this problem. It's very frustrating and I find it very odd that any game should require me to disabling network adapters. What? You're kidding me right?

    Intel core 2 duo CPU, E8400 @ 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)
    3326MB RAM
    DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

Does it crash when you click on the "click to continue screen" or at some other point?

Further, please post your dxdiag info as described above.
