Major The Walking Dead bug/glitch

So after I played Episode 4 on the Xbox 360, I decided to play again. But to my everlasting anger, the game resets me to Episode 1... I don't know if this is a bug or glitch, but if it won't get fixed, I won't be able to play Episode 5 or the other episodes. In short, whenever I play a save, my save is returned to Episode 1; and this pisses me off. I might not even buy Episode 5 because I might not even be able to play it.:mad::mad::mad::mad:

what about skipping all the way to episode 4 and play it from there

Yeah but the game will choose the choices in the previous episodes. I want to play with my choices.

I hate to tell you andy, but your shit out of luck. I had the same error happen to me on ps3 and TT told me there was nothing they could do. Hope you have your saves somewhere on a cloud.

I lost all my saves when episode 4 was released, but i couldn't wait so i replayed episode 1, skipped episode 2(not entirely sure why), and replayed episode 3 to get my choices back. Fortunately episode 2 randomly generated the exact decisions i made in my original playthrough(from what i could infer in episode 4).

You could replay them and skip a lot of the side dialogues and such that don't seem to have an impact to make it faster, or you perhaps you could try skipping one episode at a time, and redoing it until it generates the decisions you chose. I'm not sure if there's a way to check what your decisions in previous episodes are, but beyond that it doesn't look like there are many more options.

Telling someone to either skip episodes or just replay them really isn't a good enough response. I know Mornai wasn't trying to sound like that, but its extremely aggravating to try and mirror the original experience from one's initial play through. I lost all of my saves on the ps3 and had to replay from the beginning...but did i make the same decisions? No. Certainly because of a lack of will power, but i knew the outcome of certain situations and couldn't help but not want to "screw" myself.

Sorry for being off topic...still a little bitter about the horrible customer service I've received.

Note that I'm just a moderator, and not a Telltale staff member, so don't take my message as official. But, speaking from previous programming experience, sadly, there is nothing a programmer can do to bring back a save file once a save is already overwritten.

The only advice I can give is to play through the game again and make sure you make a backup save (either a cloud save or on another drive) after you're finished playing. You can do so by going to settings, system settings, then storage. Then copy your Walking Dead save to the other drive.

We are looking into the cause of this issue and hopefully we can find a solution. Unfortunately we have been unable to reproduce this issue locally, so we do not have an official workaround. However, another user who did experience this issue claimed to fix it by copying their save from slot 1 to slot 3 and then playing in slot 1 by starting the last episode where they had save data. To simplify this with an example, if you had a save from episode 4, and loading that save started episode 1, copy your save from slot 1 to slot 3, then load episode 4 in slot 1. The desired result is episode 4 will start at the point you last left off. We cannot confirm this works, but if your save now says episode 1, it's worth a shot to try to regain your progress in the last episode you played.

If anyone affected prefers to wait, I will send out updates as soon as I know anything.

I had this same issue. When I went to load my save from the end of Episode 3 to begin Episode 4, the game immediately started over from the beginning and autosaved. I would happily try moving my save from slot 1 to slot 3, but my save was erased when the game automatically started over from the beginning. Very frustrating. I have really enjoyed the game so far, but have no desire to play back through all three episodes, especially, if there is the chance of this happening again.

And yes, that workaround did work for me. I got reset in the middle of episode 3. I copied my now-reset file from slot 1 to slot 3, started up episode 3 using the slot 1 file, and the game started up with the decisions from episodes 1 and 2 intact. I lost progress from episode 3, but at least I didn't have to play 1 and 2 again.

In addition, this worked a second time when my girlfriend's save (in slot 2) got reset back on episode 1 when she was in the middle of episode 4. I copied her file (which read "Episode 1") into the third slot, she started episode 4 again (using slot 2), and it worked, with her previous choices going through. Again, she lost progress for episode 4, but was saved from having to redo the first three.

Copy the file anyway, even if it's reset. Even though it says episode 1, when you copy it from slot 1 to slot 3, and then try to load episode 4 (using slot 1), it should go through with all your choices from previous episodes intact. If you try this, let me know if it does or doesn't work.

The decisions made throughout each episode are saved in the prefs file (regardless of platform) so as long as you don't delete the data in that slot, your choices from previous episodes should still be available if you start playing Episode 4 again. When you launch Ep 4, watch the Previously On scene closely to see if your choices match what is shown.

So progress is never truly lost then, the game only kicks you back to the beginning, forcing a workaround situation. Interesting. Unfortunately, this situation seems to still be occurring, even after the "patch," as I indicated in my other thread.

So curious as to what is making the game boot you back to the beginning.

Progress can be lost if the save game is deleted or episodes are replayed. Once an episode is replayed, the data is updated once the Stats screen loads. Also, if another save is copied into the slot in question, this would also overwrite your previous data.

Thanks Jennifer and MattP for the advice and keeping us updated.

Like I mentioned on another thread, I've encountered the same bug. Unfortunately I never got to play any of Episode 4 at all and the work-around hasn't helped me.

Sorry to hear you guys haven't been able to reproduce the bug. If it helps, I had played and saved up until the end of Ep 3 before downloading Ep 4. I don't remember if I quit before the end of Ep 3's credits or not. I'm only using the first save file and I'm saving on the cloud exclusively. The first time I played with Ep 4 downloaded, I loaded my save file and selected Ep 4 from the episode menu. Episode 1 started, and once I noticed I quit back to the main menu. Now when I load my save file the episode menu opens on Ep 2, and selecting Ep 4 still starts Ep 1.
