Game saves present but not read by game

Steam version, am midway through episode 2 and randomly I open the game and the settings have been reset to defaults, and none of the game saves are being read in game. They are still present in the same location on the computer and have not been moved.

What is going on?

    Steam may have created another prefs.prop file in another directory. Please do a search for prefs.prop and remove any additional copies of this file. Please keep in mind that if you have other Telltale Games, they too will have a prefs file, but this file will be in a subdirectory for that game. The main places Steam will create this file are either in a Gamedata folder in the same subdirectory as your current saves, or in the Walking Dead installation folder in your Steam directory.
