Ep 5 "coming soon" bug

So I get pumped up that Ep 5 is released and I get prepared to play it through Steam, so i start up the game continue my save and get met by that I didn't fully complete Ep 4 and that TWD will generate any choices I had to make, so I was like what the f***, I had fully completed Ep 4.

Anyway I reload my ep 4 and notice I only have to play the last bit of ep 4, so I did that watch the credits and BAM of to ep 5. Nope, instead of it saying play it says "coming soon". What the f***, 10 minutes ago I was able to press play and now I have "coming soon" taunting me?

Ok stay cool, I thought let's verify the intergity of the game cache through steam. Again the same happened as I just typed out above. Ok now try to restart steam and try again. Again the same s*** happens.

So I was like fuck it fine I'll just continue with ep 5 and let it fill in the little blanks on ep 4, so I start playing everything it fine however on 1 option I accidently clicked the wrong option. Being the perfectionist that I am I was like hell no so I wanted to reload my previous checkpoint. I go back to the main menu click on my save it goes to ep 5 and BAM "coming soon"....Now I am out of ideas and kinda....very pissed off. All the eps worked fine and now I want the epic conclusion and I get bent over and f***ed.

Please tell me there is a solution for this.

Please check to make sure you have only 1 prefs.prop file in your save game folder (Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead). If you find another prefs file, for example, in a Gamedata folder or in your Steam directory (steamapps\common), please remove these files and try again.

Ok I removed it and now I lost my entire savegame progress...that cannot be the case...

When Steam released an update a couple months ago to convert game files to a more efficient format, this created additional prefs files in other directories. More than likely your game began saving to this alternative prefs file. If the file is still in your trash, you can try copying this into your save directory (overwriting the existing prefs file). This might work, but it also may create other problems.

Oh this is just jolly, I'll tackle this tomorrow when I have more motivation and give an update. Thanks for the help though.

Hi, I'm having this exact issue, except with one caveat.

I can complete episode 4 (from lees incident with the walker by the trash on), and complete the story and go back to the main menu. From there, My episode 5 goes from playable to "Coming soon." If I attempt to exit the game, it says it's going to revert my save to the last available checkpoint.

I have the option to start episode 5 if I just load in, but I can't carry my save game and my decisions into it.

I found another prefs.prop file in my steam walking dead folder, and renamed it, but this didn't seem to fix any of my issues.

Is there some sort of way I can get a working save so I can continue on?

I did also notice that at the end of episode 4 where it shows me what other players chose, it says things like:

    DESC 1 1:1
    DESC 2 2:1

etc, basically not showing the text behind what decisions I made, if that makes sense.

You will need to try my suggestion above. Either remove this file, or copy it into your save directory. I do recommend backing up any file you remove. It's more than likely that the file in your Steam directory needs to be in your save directory, since renaming it didn't change anything. Check my last few posts for more detail.

Basically the way I got it downloading was renaming the entire C:\Users\usernamehere\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead and then open the exe then close it again, then start it again, and now all episodes are avaliable to download. This is actually quite poor. Can Telltale in future provide manual download links or indeed make the episodes separate again in future. That was far far less problematic than this approach it appears.

    Thanks

EDIT: This was the non-steam version as well.

I have backed up the old prefs.prop file and moved it, and put the other one in my save games folder. I am replaying the end of chapter 4 right now and will let you know what happens..

...I'm at the beginning of chapter 4 now. Lost chapter 4 entirely...

I only have 1 prefs.prop file on my C: drive and it is in my save directory. I have a backup of the file on a different partition. Could this cause the issue? I have restarted my computer as well.

I have the same exact problem on the Mac/Steam-version. Running OS X 10.8.2.

I've had similar problems with the earlier episodes, ie. the finished episode rewinding into the last save before the end, so I've had to play the last leg of the game again before moving to the next episode.
  • edited November 2012
I'm playing on Steam and having the same "coming soon" and it won't seem to acknowledge that I've finished episode 4.

I also checked and only have one prefs.prop file on in the save folder. Please give me hand here telltale.

Thanks, deleting the duplicate remaining in the steam folder fixed the issue and my saves are working again!

This thread, S2 specifically, fixed my issue. And I'm sure it will fix yours as well.

Edit: well, my game starts, but not a single choice that I chose appears to have followed through. I had the whole gang at the end of E4, and I have no one now. Yeah. What the heck is even going on anymore?

edit2: Rewinding back to E4P7 crashes the game. I guess there's no hope for my save file?

I managed to continue my previous save by replacing the prefs.prop file in documents with the one from C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\WalkingDead104

Well, I moved everything from the Telltales folder to my desktop, launched the game, and am now downloading all of the episodes again (including 5). I plan to copy the save files back and hope that I can play episode 5 with my previous information saved. Try this at your own risk.

** EDIT ** After downloading all of the episodes, I copied the old Telltale Folder to the new one in "My Documents". It let me continue my game and it looks like it saved my choices! Definitely not an easy fix, but at least it worked. I'd still say do this at your own risk. There is always the possibility it might not work for you. If you don't want to risk it, I'd wait for Telltale games to say if they are going to fix it.

Just saying I have the same described issue on Mac (bought through Steam).

When I load the game I can see Ep 5 installed. I continue my saved file from Ep 4 which always backs up about 5 minutes before the end and I continue to the credits. Afterwards it shows Ep 5 as "Coming Soon".

If I start at Ep 5 without my save, it works just fine... but I am slightly attached to my decisions and not interested in random ones.

I have the exact same problem as fox3586 and i do play on a mac as well. In the save folder i only have one prefs.prop file, please help.

    Same problem here. Non-Steam version.
This needs to be fixed, please.

  • edited November 2012
Can we get an update? Just so we know that you guys are working on this?
  • edited November 2012
I have the Steam Version on Mac with the very same problem (5 appears but I have to finish 4 and then 5 shows coming soon) and I don't have these folders OR I'm not smart enough to do what you've suggested.

    Will there be a patch?

It's Thanksgiving here in the states, folks. Don't expect a solid answer until Monday (11/26).

No offense...but that is something TTG should have thought of before releasing the game right before thanksgiving. They even admit that bugs happen after every launch.

I would love to know what Tell Tale is doing to resolve this issue. Can we get some kind of response from Tell Tale knowing that this is happening and what the ETA on a fix will be? If there is no fix, can those who are effected get a refund? I would love one since I played a lot of the game, and now the game will not find my save files. I do not want to start all over because Tell Tale wont give us some kind of help on this, other than, delete pref.prop file, and then our saves are lost. If this is a steam issue, then work with Valve to fix. All I have seen on these forums are messages from admins who address the problem as one issue, and then when the thread gets filled with many people having the same issue with no fix, there is no more messages and the thread sort of dies. Figure this out please, give us some kind of communication!

Just posting that all of my choices appear to be gone. Went back to the middle of Episode 4, got a "Previously" movie, Doug was alive, shouldnt be. Kenny took care of duck, shouldnt have.

So I guess i'm hosed, and have to start all over?
  • edited November 2012
Honestly if I could just get a save game with the choices I picked in the first place i'd be satisfied.
  • edited November 2012
Ok, this seriously makes no sense. In the "stats" for each episode, I CLEARLY see my choices. They are perfect. But when I start a game, it's like the opposite. Why is this even happening? What file do I need to edit or delete to make this game actually read my save file? This is getting to the point where i'd rather just youtube it and save myself the headache.

    BUMP

Welcome back TellTale. What's the answer?
I loved Ep 1-4 but don't count on me (or anyone else with these save issues) for Season 2 if there isn't some sort of resolution.
  • edited November 2012
Okay, after three hours of screwing around with it, this should work for Steam users. Anyone else may be able to modify the instructions to fix the issue.

The source of the problem is that there are multiple prefs.prop files and the game doesn't load them correctly. If you don't want to delete these extras (and maybe you shouldn't to be safe) just copy them to some other folder. Or, if you want, backup all Walking Dead files found within My Documents and Steamapps.

    1. Find the prefs.prop file in My Documents > Telltale Games > The Walking Dead. THAT'S THE ONLY ONE YOU'RE GOING TO KEEP.

    2. Go to Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\the walking dead\Pack. There may be multiple prefs.prop files in these nested folders. In my case, there were three. Delete them all.

    3. Restart the game and play it from whatever point you were at. In my case, it was a few checkpoints back from the end of Episode 4.

    4. Once you've finished Episode 4, it will probably say that Episode 5 is "Coming Soon." Close The Walking Dead. At this point, I copied my prefs.prop file from My Documents to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\the walking dead\Pack\default. You may not actually have to do this. I was so muddled trying to get this fixed that I was just trying stuff.

    5. In Steam, right click The Walking Dead, go to Properties, Local Files, Verify Integrity of Game Cache. The verification will find a problem and download some game files. Non-Steam users, at this point, you may try a re-install. I genuinely don't know if that will help you.

    6. Steam users, at this point, you should be all set. Open The Walking Dead and you should be able to start Episode 5 with your full story chain.

Hope that didn't mess up your saves...
