Changed resolution, now I can't play the game

I changed my resolution to 1600x1200 (I think) and now all I get is an error every time I load up the game. Is there some kind of safe mode I can play in to reverse the change?

Any help appreciated

What error message do you get?

You can try if pressing Alt-Enter as soon as the game goes fullscreen helps. It switches the game to windowed mode.

"Could not initialize Direct 3D. Make sure you have current video drivers..."

I've tried alt enter, no such luck. The problem is really that I was stupid enough to change the resolution in game (It was working fine previously).

Did you just start playing the game or are you far into it?

Also, please post your dxdiag info.

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.
Windows 8: At the start screen, type in "dxdiag" and hit enter

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.

Just got into Episode 5. Yep, had no problems until I did this. Thanks for the help, by the way.

Just got into Episode 5. Yep, had no problems until I did this. Thanks for the help, by the way.

    Let's try something easy first.

Please make a backup copy of your savegame folder:

    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead

Then try the "restore previous version" feature (right click, "properties", "restore previous version") on the original.

You might lose a bit of progress, depending on the date of the latest version.
The problem is, that the resolution is stored in the prefs.prop, which is also tied with your savegames. Therefore we can't just delete it without losing them.

Tried that on both the prefs.doc and the exe for the game. No luck.

It was supposed to be done on the entire savegame folder.
What do you mean by no luck? No previous versions available?

It's still giving me the same error as before.

I just tried restoring the folder and I'm still having the same trouble.

Is the date of the previous folder version a time before you changed the games resolution?

    Yes.

    Okay, that's odd.

Please try renaming the savegame folder and start the game.

If the game works then, we know for sure that it's something in your original savegame folder.

Just tried that and it's still not working. You're right this is very odd...

Please check if there are files called prefs.prop in the install folder of TWD
    ( something like \Steam\SteamApps\common\the walking dead )
    or any of its subfolders.

Ok, there was a file under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\the walking dead

I removed it and the game runs now. I appreciate how helpful you've been. But I have to ask...what can I do now to get my saves to carry over?

I've backed up the file, of course.

It's always good to keep backups.

You can try if restoring your backup copy of the savegame folder works.

If it doesn't you might have to copy the prefs.prop from the steam folder to the savegame folder.

I tried various configurations but in the end they all just gave me a randomized outcome at the start of episode 5. I thought "Screw it" and decided to play through that.

Thanks for the help though, without it the game wouldn't have ran at all.
