Another "Walkingdead101.exe has stopped working" thread

Hi guys and gals,

I purchased the Walking Dead game on Steam prior to episode 3 coming out. I was able to play through both episodes without any problems. When episode 3 was released, my game bugged. I have been searching and trying for MONTHS to get my game to work, and failed.

The error message I get is the one stated in the title of the thread, and occurs when I click to continue on the title screen as the game crashes.

I have tried every single thing I found in FAQs online, in threads, etc... and need further help.

If you need info from me, I can provide.

Just please someone help me!

    Please post your dxdiag info.

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.
Windows 8: At the start screen, type in "dxdiag" and hit enter

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.
Sometimes the Forums spam filter catches long posts like this. Don't worry, we can still see them and make them visible.

I would try unplugging all USB devices which are not absolutely essential, including the USB sound device.

Some previous game had issues with Wacom drivers, so uninstalling them is worth a try too.

I would also try running the game during a clean boot.

Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    4. Select the Services tab
    5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
    6. Click Disable all
    7. If running the game on Steam, re-check the "Steam Client Service"
    8. Click on OK
    9. Click Restart.
    10. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your settings by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click Ok
    4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

Hi- sorry for the delayed response- Thanksgiving weekend and all.

I tried what you suggested, and it did not work. I still receive the error message and the game crashes. Are there any other suggestions you have for me, or am I stuck not playing the game?

Thanks for the help, by the way :)

Please try if the game starts if you rename/move your savegame folder:
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead
  • edited November 2012
I removed the whole folder and I'm still crashing.

Does it also crash if you disconnect from the internet while running the game?

Help! I'm trying to launch the game and immediately getting a "WalkingDead101.exe has stopped working" error. What do I do?!

There's a few things you can do to resolve this. First, make sure you meet the minimum requirements for the game. This is important. If you don't meet the minimum requirements, there may be little if anything we will be able to do to troubleshoot your issue.

    Try rebooting your system.

If you're using Steam, verify the integrity of the game cache. If you're not sure how to do this, the link below will walk you through it.

    https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335

Try right-clicking game's executable, which is WalkingDead101.exe, and then click Run As Adminstrator.

If it's still not working, right-click the game's executable, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab, and then check the options to run in compatibility mode for Windows 98/ME. Also check the option to disable desktop composition.

Bumping in case someone else has a suggestion for me.
  • edited November 2012
Im bumping with you. Ive played through all the chapters on steam up to the end of chapter 5 part 1 (thus I know it has nothing to do with any of the "fixes" suggested by the above mod), and the screen blacks out and crashes to windows with the aforementioned error. Does the team know that this is an issue, and is it being patched? Im significantly pissed at this.

I'll join in on the bumping parade... the game crashes every time after I click to continue. I can't get to the main menu anymore. Before, I was able to get to the menu but somehow made my problem worse while trying to restore my lost savegames (even though I didn't do much of anything). The dinput8.dll solution was how I got the game to start at all after downloading Episode 5 - before I tried that, the game failed to launch entirely. At this point I'm losing my patience.

Here's a screenshot followed by a link to my dx diagnostic info:

Thanks in advance for any help!! I hope TellTale get their asses in gear and fix this issue soon.

    bump again

Please at least say you're trying to resolve this, TellTale team... it really upsets me more that there's been nothing said about this issue (to my knowledge - feel free to correct me on this). Also - my saved game files are still intact, but the game wasn't seeing them when it was still launching. How can I point the game to the correct location on my drive? I'm really, really wanting to play Ep 5, guys. Especially now that there's no new Walking Dead tv episodes until Feb!

Got this same issue starting chapter 5. Oh and it also won't recognize any of my saved games any more. Yay! Game of the Year!

I've uninstalled the game - I'm not planning to play it or buy another TellTale game until this is resolved.

This is the most ridiculous error I've seen, it seems to be due to Steam re-jigging things after Episode 3 but the complete LACK of support from Telltale is beyond absurd.

If you disable your internet connection prior to pressing "click start/Click continue" it works for me (How this is possible I don't know)

If that fails sometimes it's the USB or Wireless controller, disconnect that prior to launching the game and see if that helps.

My Specs: Win7 64bit, AMD 6970, XBOX wireless controller.

I do not own a controller, so the controller thing is not my problem- might be for someone else, tho!

    Nope, didn't work.

This is getting beyond ridiculous. Can someone from the company address this issue? I am VERY close to demanding my money back. This is not how you treat customers- you released a product that is broken. You cannot fix it. Either fix it, or return my money.

Does anyone in Telltale have any shred of decency? ESPECIALLY after winning GOTY at the VGAs? I mean, I'm happy about that, don't get me wrong, but how do you win an accolade like that while completely ignoring an entire community of players DYING to play the damned game but can't due to bugs and glitches?! I've been a customer and a fan since the beginning, from Bone to Sam & Max, Poker Night, and now TWD. What the hell happened? I get the feeling that this game was optimized for iOS and all other platforms can kick rocks. This, unfortunately will have to be the last Telltale game I buy.

I would like to re-bump this thread on account of having the same problem. I have troubleshooted, I have tried all the fixes offered in the faq. The only one I can't try is running the .exe in admin. The right-clicking it offers no means of running as admin and there's no compatibility tab in the properties. Out of the kindness of his heart and excitement from his own experience, an online buddy of mine gifted me a copy for Christmas. I've read many people complaining that Telltale doesn't have a sense of urgency in dealing with major bugs. I don't know if this is true, but God if they don't, I hope the fix it up pretty soon.
  • edited December 2012
So it's the holidays, Steam is having their holiday sale, and I see my friends all buying TWD. It's unfair to have to watch my friends play this game when I've owned it for MONTHS and have yet to finish the content I PAID for. This is the absolute last game I buy from the company, and will be telling all of my friends about how poorly this has been handled. I will continue to bump this thread because maybe if enough people raise a big enough stink you'll actually listen for once, and not ignore us.

I hope you've been watching what has been going on with WarZ. Because if you don't get your act together and either COMMUNICATE WITH US or FIX THIS, that could someday be you.

I just submitted a dispute charges request with my credit card company. I hope I get a refund, this is crazy stupid.

You have to go into the Steam folder and locate both the steam.exe and the walkingdead101.exe files there. For example, mine is located:

    D:/games/steam/steamapps/common/thewalkingdead

Obviously, the D:/games part will be wherever your Steam folder is actually located, but the rest of that is the same for everyone. The steam.exe will be in the main Steam folder, and the walkingdead101.exe will be pretty obvious. Right-click both of those, go to properties, then compatibility. You'll see the option to run as admin, not to mention Windows versions and other settings.

    Hopefully this helps.

Your integrated intel graphics chip does not meet the minimum requirements of TWD:
    PC System Requirements:
Windows Operating system: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Processor: 2.0 GHz Pentium 4 or equivalent Memory: 3 GB RAM Hard Disk Space: 2 GB Space Free Video Card: ATI or NVidia card w/ 512 MB RAM Direct X 9.0c Audio card required
Not recommended for Intel integrated graphics

Installing a recent AMD/Nvidia graphics card could help.

I tried the fix to run both steam and walking dead as an administrator, doesn't work. And, I saw the comment about my graphics card may not be compatible. I am definitely not going to buy a new graphics card for a $27 game. What do I need to do to get a refund, this is NOT worth it.

This worked for me - I hope it can help some people

    (1) Right click on WalkingDead101.exe, mine was located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\GameData
    (2) Click Properties
    (3) Click on Compatibility tab
    (4) Under Compatibility Mode I checked the box and selected the OS I am running (Windows 7)
    (5) I also selected "Run this program as an administrator" under the "Privilege Level" on the same tab
