Purchased TWD for PC received 101.exe error

I just purchased the game and after playing for about an hour and a half, I booted the game back up, got this error and then it crashed. When trying to start the game again, all of my save data was gone and it was asking me to start over. I have a NVIDIA video card, so the integrated video card should not be a problem. Is there a fix for this?

It's difficult to find out why it crashed. You can take a look into the "application" part of windows "event viewer" to see if you can find the crash event. Then you can copy the details by right clicking on the entry and paste them here. There's a good chance that it won't contain much useful information though.

It might also be beneficial to have a look at your dxdiag info.

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.
Windows 8: At the start screen, type in "dxdiag" and hit enter

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.
Sometimes the Forums spam filter catches long posts like this. Don't worry, we can still see them and make them visible.

Here is my dxdiag. But even if we find the reason why it crashed, is there a way to bring back the save data?

Here is my dxdiag. But even if we find the reason why it crashed, is there a way to bring back the save data?

    System Manufacturer: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.
    System Model: U47VC

Card name: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000

    The savegames are stored at
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead
Since you just started playing recently the chances are slim, but you can try the "restore previous version" feature (right click, "properties", "restore previous version") on the folder.
The problem is, that the crash probably corrupted the prefs.prop file, which also contains data required to find the savegames.

Is that a notebook with nvidia optimus?
If so, it is possible that that made the game crash. I recommend creating a profile in the graphics drivers settings to make sure that TWD uses the Nvidia chip from the beginning.
  • edited November 2012
How am I able to do that with the graphics chip? I actually had thought I had changed the settings to do that, but it might not have worked properly.
  • DjNDBDjNDB Moderator
    edited November 2012
It was only a guess. If you already have made that setting, it could have been something different.
There's some instructions here on how to set it up.

Besides that, do you have any software firewall/security software running that could have interfered with the game?
  • edited November 2012
Nothing that I know of. It was just very strange that it was working fine until one time until I tried to play it again. I will probably just start the game over and see if the problem happens again.

    edited November 2012
Since we don't know why it crashed earlier, i recommend you make a backup copy of your savegame folder after each playing session. That way it can be recovered if the game crashes again.
  • edited November 2012
Sorry for the delayed reply, but can you explain exactly how I can make a backup?
  • DjNDBDjNDB Moderator
    edited November 2012
You can just open this folder in the Windows Explorer and make a copy of it:
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead

If you want to save space it's enough to just copy the prefs.prop and all *.save files.

I just finished episode 2 of The Walking Dead, exited the game, tried to enter again, and got this error. Now when I open the game, the entire game has been reset and all of my decisions are gone. I really would not like to play through the entire first two episodes again at this point. This is the second time this error has occurred with my game, and I really would like to know if there is any way that I can bring back my decisions. What can I do?

I merged your new thread into your existing once, because it's the same issue, and it's better to keep all information in one place.

The answers are pretty much the same as the last time.

If you made a backup of your savegames as I recommended you earlier you can copy that back.

Otherwise you can try the "restore previous version" feature.

You didn't answer this earlier, but i think we should try everything to find out why the game crashed.
    DjNDB wrote: »
It's difficult to find out why it crashed. You can take a look into the "application" part of windows "event viewer" to see if you can find the crash event. Then you can copy the details by right clicking on the entry and paste them here. There's a good chance that it won't contain much useful information though.
  • edited January 2013
Sorry, I am still not exactly sure how to get to that place where I can find out why it crashed. Can you explain that in more detail? Also, unfortunately I did not make a copy of the save file since last time. The previous versions that were recovered are from a couple weeks ago which is before I started playing again. However, in the documents folder, it still shows up to save_28.save from this morning with every other save document. Is there any way I can use this information?

Here are instructions on how to start the Event viewer.

If you want to try some tinkering you can try recovering the latest savegame using the Siezemore fix. Be aware, that it might have side effects, since it doesn't restore the prefs.prop contents that were lost.
  • edited January 2013
I opened the event viewer but how do I find where this specific error is in there?
  • edited January 2013
Also, I have been trying the Sizemore fix, but each time I try to restart the game, the save files reappear in the folder. Is there a way for that not to happen so that I can have the game simply create a new folder?

In the Event viewer, open the "Windows Logs/Application" section.
On the right side under "Actions" select "Filter Current Log..."
In the Drop-down box "Sources" select "Application Error" and confirm by pressing "OK".

No click through the individual entries and look for the name of the games .exe.
If you find anything related to the game, please right click some of the entries, select "copy the details as text", and paste them in a new reply.

I guess you are using the Steam version? It restores the savegames from steam cloud. Sadly it seems to have synced your broken ones already, and doesn't have a version history.
Before manually modifying the savegames, you need to disable steam cloud for TWD (In Steam, right click TWD and select "properties". Open the tab "updates" and remove the checkbox from "Enable Steam cloud synchronization for TWD").

That's great. fmodex.dll is the sound library that the game uses, so the crashes might be sound related.

It just so happens, that you use a rather old sound driver.
So installing the latest Realtek HDA Driver might prevent future crashes.
  • edited January 2013
Okay, I will do that. Thank you.
However, at this point, I am still having a great amount of trouble trying to use the fix that you sent earlier, and I am truly frustrated at this point. I shut off the cloud sync with the game, deleted the folder, and tried to begin the game over with episode 2 to be able to fix the file. However, when I start the game from episode 2, all I get is a black screen. Episode 1 works fine, but not 2. I really do not know what to do at this point, but I am not going to be starting the game completely over again and would like this to be resolved, if at all possible.

That's interesting. That should not happen with an empty savegame folder.

Please check if there are any prefs.prop files in the install folder
    (e.g. \Steam\SteamApps\common\the walking dead)
    or its subfolders.
If so, make a backup copy of the prefs.prop and delete it from the install folder.

You can then try if you can use that prefs.prop with your savegames, by copying them into the savegame folder together.
  • edited January 2013
So it seems to be that the fix did work, but I'll see how it works in the future. Thank you for the help. Just one last question, though, should I turn the cloud sync back on?
  • DjNDBDjNDB Moderator
    edited January 2013
    That's awesome.
This time, really make a backup copy of your savegame folder. You might not have that much luck next time.

Afterwards enabling steam cloud should be okay.
  • edited January 2013
Very strange, but it doesn't seem to be completely right. Not sure if there's anything you can help with, though. When I finished episode 2, after it seemed the problem had been fixed, it looked like my decisions stayed given that I had let Doug die in the first episode. However, I just started chapter 3 and while in the previously on TWD, it showed my decisions as being accurate from episode 2, Doug is still alive which is wrong given my decisions. Is there nothing I can do about this problem?

    What fix did work earlier?
The a prefs.prop from the install folder or the Siezemore fix?
  • edited January 2013
    I used the Siezemore fix
  • edited January 2013
But I did have to delete a prefs.prof file earlier in order to be able to use the Siezemore fix

    edited January 2013
I don't know why it didn't work properly.
Have you used the savegame with the latest date?

Also as I mentioned, it's not a 100% fix. It might be a problem caused by missing info in the prefs.prop.

Sorry for the late response. Your post was caught by the forum spam filter and I missed it until now.

Do you have the TTG Store, Steam or CD version?

The Walking dead is not officially supported on Windows 8. Many people get it running though.

In your case i notice that there's almost no free space on your C: Drive, which can cause the installation to fail. Please try freeing you 4-5GB on it.
