Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space retail, episodes won't start

I purchased the Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space retail disc, and after installing it none of the episodes will start. When I try to run them, either through the Autorun or by directly starting a SamMax20*.exe file, I get the disc activity cursor for a bit and can see the exe for the episode gathering RAM for itself in task manager, but when it gets to about 28 mb it just terminates without any messaging.

I've tried restarting my computer. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, without antivirus running. The behavior persists.

Running Windows XP.

    Have you tried right clicking the .exe on the DVD and selecting "run as administrator"?

    Please also post your dxdiag info.

    Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
    Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.
    Windows 8: At the start screen, type in "dxdiag" and hit enter

    Now click on the button that says "save all information".
    It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

    Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.
