Black screen loading save in first episode

I can start game, and the show the save. I click to load it, and just get a black screen.

This initially worked, but then I got killed by the zombie cop. Has worked since. I got to play for a total of about 10 minutes.

Steam version
Win7 64-bit
AMD 5400+
8GB of RAM
Radeon 4850 with newest drivers for that card

Are you playing through Steam or did you buy your copy through the Telltale Store?

First, please navigate to your save directory at Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead. Right click on your prefs.prop file and if you have to option to revert this file to an earlier version, please choose to do so and then launch the game again.

If you don't have this option, or this does not resolve the issue, please search your computer for any additional prefs.prop files. These will most likely be in either a Gamedata folder in the Telltale Games subdirectory, or in the folder where you chose to install the game. If you play through Steam, this can found in your Steam install folder by following the path steamapps\common\the walking dead. If you do find another prefs file, make a back-up copy just in case, and then remove the file from the directory where you found it. If this does not resolve your problem, it's likely that the second prefs file was associated with your save games, so take the back-up copy and swap it with the prefs file in your save game folder.
