TWD corruptes prefs.prop file
Hi all,
we've all heard of it by now but I'd like to share what I've found out.
I've just encountered the now well known save bug a couple of days back and read through a couple of threads here, but there seem to be two different issues here.
- One issue is where the game tries to read a prop.prefs file in a different location. This can be fixed by copying the file over to the correct location.
eg: http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32666
- There other problem (this is what I'm experiencing) is that for some reason the game seems to corrupt the prefs.prop completely and the whole progress is gone. There are some suggestions as to how one can fiddle around with it to at least get to the current episode again, but that basically 'destroys' all replays.
I'd like to get some definite attention to this corruption issue which seems to started happening ever since Episode 4 or 5 got introduced.
I played TWD in Episode 4 as usual, everything worked fine. At some point, Episode 5 came out but I was still playing Episode 4.
A couple of days ago I could not start TWD, upon starting the game it would quit with an 'Appcrash' (windows error, thewalkingdead101.exe).
I tried several times but could not get it to start. Then I rebooted the PC and the game started again- but with a minimized UI and all settings resetted to default. That's when I realized that all my saved games were not showing anymore and the game only offered me to start a completely new game or choose random choice for 'my' current episode.
Since I rebuilt my PC a couple of weeks back, I still had a backup of my old saved games and copied them over. To be on the safe side, I deleted and re-installed TWD via Steam and inserted my old saved games.
Interestingly enough, TWD crashed with the exact same error as above again- and I noticed it corrupted the prefs.prop file again (file size changed to 1kb everytime it crashed when launching it).
I did this two or three times to make sure this wasn't happening randomly (error stayed the same). The game would work if I deleted my old saved games and run it again from scratch.
In this high blood pressure frustrated state I decided to give it one other shot because I could not explain the fact that the game worked fine with my backup of my old saved games the last time I installed TWD again.
I went on to delete everything in the TWD folder within my windows user directory, rebooted the PC, re-inserted my old saved games... and all of a sudden it worked again (for whatever reason..). So now I'm back to the start of Episode 4, not too much progress missing here for me now but I'd be p*ssed off big time if I had lost all my saved games.
So.. I hope this sheds some light and you, Telltale, give us an update as to what seems to be causing this- AND a fix of course.
It sure looks like this corruption could happen at any time ?!
