I lost my save file while in chapter 4!!! Please help!

I went to load Walking Dead after patching steam on 12/20/2012. I accidentally loaded torchlight, clicked out of it and double clicked walking dead assuming I closed Torchlight by simply closing the window. I got a direct X error. I reload Walking Dead and ALLL my saves are gone. I looked in my C drive documents and found my saves intact.

The files included were: save_1.sav through save_53.save" and "prefs.prop" and lastly a folder called "syncFS"

I always watched the end credits and did not close the game till the next episode loaded. (spoiler alert!!) I am at the part where you are gathering what you need to start the boat at the school.

Any ideas how to solve this?

Thanks
-Ian

I wanted to add I tried placing my "prefs.prop" file in the Walking Dead default folder and it did not work. My "prefs.prop" file is at 7kb. I was in chapter 4.

Considering the file size, your prefs.prop was corrupted by the crash you encountered.
If your system supports it, you can try the "restore previous version" feature (right click, "properties", "restore previous version") on the prefs.prop in your savegame folder, to restore it to the latest state before the crash.

That's the only location where a prefs.prop should be, so please remove the copy from your install folder.

I tried starting a new game on episode 4 using the decision generator. I played up until the water front where Kenny and I are looking for boats. It did not create a new save. It refuses to save my progress now.

Sadly I don't know why it would not save anymore. We can only try to create a state in which the game should work.

Please make a backup copy of your savegame folder, just in case we want to try to recover something from it later on.

Then try deleting the original savegame folder, and all possible alternative locations, if they exist:
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead
    %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\
    %PUBLIC%\Documents\Telltale Games\GameData
    %PUBLIC%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\GameData
    %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\Telltale Games\GameData

Also delete every existing prefs.prop from the install folder and its subfolders.

Now try starting Episode 4 in a fresh save slot with random choices again. I suggest you put the game in windowed mode and keep an explorer with the savegame folder open besides it, so you can see if the game creates a .save file.

I did a quick test with Episode 4, and it normally creates its first .save file right after the "previously on The Walking Dead" part, when it shows "This game series adapts to the choices you make".

If it doesn't save at that point, you can try if uninstalling and reinstalling the entire game helps.
